To be offended by Nike?

My go-to sports brand is launching a new sports bra using a transwoman influencer.

What are they trying to communicate to me, their target audience? That their new sports bras are too wide in the back and have no extra space and good support for my breasts?

I would have thought a fair bit of biological reality goes into designing sports clothing for men and women, to ensure maximum comfort and optimum performance.

I feel… mocked. Is this what Nike thinks women are?

The funny thing is, Nike do have history of politics and appearing right-on, but on this occasion they’ve missed the train by 2 years… I invite you to consider carefully where you spend your woman-money.

With a bit of luck, this will be their Ratner’s moment.

strawberry2017 · 06/04/2023 14:55

As a women I'm not interested in products modelled by a man. I want to see the product on real women, in various shapes and sizes. This would massively put me off.
Was it an April fools?

I said neither does anyone else bar the caps writer so it wasn’t just me personally I thought you meant.

You do know that brands sponsor content creators all the time?

Shaky videos are par for the course these days.

I’d not heard of him so looked up his IG. He has 1.7m followers and plenty of paid partnerships. There’s no logical reason to suggest it doesn’t include Nike. If this particular footage has paid partnership on it then it joins the long list under that Twitter post in op

There’s no logic in stating it’s not attributed to Nike
Nike Women
Bud Light
Ole Henrikson
Plaza Hotel
Mac
Ulta Beauty
Tampax
Crest
Kate Spade
Ok Cupid
Svedka Vodka
Urban Decay
Walmart
Mugler
Rent the Runway
Aritzia
Charlotte Tilbury

Any of these are likely to be shaky videos or typical unprofessional IG shots

Ok, well, it’s hard to know for sure, so either of us could be right. Anyway, bottom line for me is Nike are shits and not and never were your, or women’s friends, all they’re after is our cash and have a plethora of ways to persuade us to give it them. If it’s backfired and people are boycotting Nike for whatever reason then that’s a good thing.

MarshaBradyo · 06/04/2023 15:12

He walked for NYFW and has a recent award from Forbes

There’s no reason to think Nike partnership amongst the many on his IG is fake.

But it goes to show how strange it is purely on face value

FMSucks · 06/04/2023 15:16

I emailed Nike this morning about my utter contempt for them after this at:
[email protected]

I spend hundreds on Nike products as both myself and my sons love them, particularly Jordans. We won't be buying from them again.

Oblomov23 · 06/04/2023 15:16

Piss off Nike.

Esmereldapawpatrol · 06/04/2023 16:09

Apologies, I missed that, it honestly looks like a piss take!! She doesn't have boobs to need a sports bra and her shape is that of a man.

YANBU OP I feel offended too and it certainly would put me off buying from Nike in the future. I just hope Sweaty Betty don't join in as I love their leggings and wouldn't want to have to boycott them too!!

Esmereldapawpatrol · 06/04/2023 16:13

Just to say I am not against trans gender people being employed to promote products for the gender they assign themselves , it just has to make sense.

Dylan has been paid to promote tampons, too. I mean...it's fucking lunacy.

I'm baffled.

It's offends you and is going to stop you shopping there but you still refer to this man as 'she'

Why?

Respect? Does he respect you when is he appropriating your womanhood and taking the piss out of you?

'She' is quite clearly a man. There are times when I can accept someone's committed to living as a woman but this one clearly hasn't.

I wont be boycotting Nike.
I don’t think clothing should be segregated by sex anyway..so I do not care whether a male or female is wearing any article of sports clothing no matter what they call themselves. I get it can seem offensive to see a male in a sports bra, but so what? Just because we were raised thinking their nipples are ok to expose but ours aren’t- who says everyone has to dress that way? If a male wants to cover up their nipples/top and use a sports bra to do it that is ok by me. Similarly if a female wanted to work out topless…I’d be ok with that too.

But the point is that a lot of women can’t work out topless because we need the support. There’s no way I could work out without a decent sports bra as it would hurt too much. The fact is that biological male and female bodies are proportioned differently and we need bras that fit us. It’s difficult enough for me to get bras that fit my narrow back and big boobs without making them even wider on the back and smaller on the boobs for people that don’t actually need them. Dylan whatever his name is could wear a vest top and still be fine if he/ she is so bothered about wearing women’s clothes.

MoggyMittens23 · 06/04/2023 14:35

Pretty sure Nike would sue the fuck out of him if he tagged them like he has and they weren't actually in a paid partnership?!

Yes, but I honestly wondered if Dylan was looking for trouble.

having now seen the other list of endorsements...between that and the letter from Kamala Harris, I now understand why people think we're living in a simulation...

Merangutan · 06/04/2023 16:51

Absolute garbage from Nike. There’s a reason clothing charts have male and female versions: our bodies are notably different shapes. These are basic undeniable facts based on a sample size of literally millions and millions of people.

It’s ridiculous that we are in a place where major companies think modelling a bra should be done on a man with implants simply because in his head he believes he has a female body.

I have no interest in a unisex sports bra. Of course, the definition of ‘transphobia’ no longer means fear or hatred of trans people and no doubt now includes a wish to see bras modelled on women 🙄

So many posters on here sound like trump fans. “AnOTeR brAnD tO bOYcOTt!!”

Not at all. Women are SICK to the back teeth of having our rights pushed to the side in favour of this woke shit.

I think this is important.

What does transphobia mean?
It's meaning has gotten completly lost. Not supporting a 13 year old having both breasts removed would be considered transphobic to most TRAs.

lottie2888 · 06/04/2023 17:04

In fairness, I don’t think anyone here is Nikes target audience. I can’t see them losing sales over this.
My teens certainly wouldn’t care- or even notice.

I have to disagree with you as I don't think it is up to any one of us to decide how someone feels about their gender, it isn't solely based on how they look. I am happy to refer to someone as they wish. The issue here is them being paid to sell clothes that they don't have the body for. If it was make up then fine.

I literally cannot stand the man.Every time I think he will just fade away something else happens. He’s taking the piss big time!

Hilarious and sad at the same time, isn’t it! I honestly don’t know how people like Kamala Harris manage to graduate university and build a big career. There are some very, uhm, uncomplicated people high up in US politics.

Didn’t their latest Supreme Court judge say she can’t define what a woman is, because she is not a biologist?

It’s a drop in the ocean isn’t it for Nike though.

Adverts like this are targeted, my teens won’t see them come up on their FYP and even if they did they’d scroll past as aren’t interested.

Lockheart · 06/04/2023 17:21

Exploiting mostly women in sweatshops so we can have cheap sportswear - all totally ok.

Dylan whatshisface advertising Nike sportsbra in a social media post of as yet unascertained official-ness - outrage! An insult to women! Sick! Women should all boycott.
