'Queen' Camilla

1000 replies

Replitad · 04/04/2023 23:12

I wouldn't have called myself a republican before now but I think the 'Queen' Camilla thing has tipped me over the edge.

Pretty audacious considering their history and I think a lot of the public won't agree. I certainly won't be celebrating or even watching coronation.

Mooshamoo - It doesn't matter how attractive Diana was, looks very rarely come into it for a long term relationship, if a person loves someone then they will find them as a whole attractive regardless of whether that person is stunningly beautiful. You cannot make a person love someone on looks alone.

I hope William and even eugh harry have been consulted on this decision.

I hope William and even eugh harry have been consulted on this decision.

Why should they be?

And there's not really any 'decision' to be made. Camilla is Queen and has been since the moment her husband became King.

AskMeMore · 05/04/2023 17:07

William and Harry will not have been consulted. This is what Charles has always wanted.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 05/04/2023 15:07

No because she isn’t the mother of the monarch.

And the only reason the Queen mother was styled that way was because her name was Elizabeth. Would have been odd to have 2 Queen Elizabeth’s!

@TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl also the fact that she would have been known as the Dowager Queen but Mary was still alive and had that title

Rosula · 05/04/2023 17:09

She was a lovely, unspoilt girl, almost ruined by a selfish, faithless husband. Thankfully after they split she was able to throw herself into work at which she excelled. However she didn't find true, lasting love.

Sadly, she was spoilt, by a highly dysfunctional upbringing. Her father didn't want yet another daughter, her mother was largely excluded from her life from a relatively young age, her father was a very distant parent and she disliked her stepmother. She was badly educated. Her grandmother was fairly desperate to marry her off as aristocratically as possible.

She didn't "throw herself into work". She involved herself and leant her valuable image in a few high profile causes, and credit to her for that. However, this was fitted in between affairs with married men, photo opportunities, and free holidays paid for by her boyfriends. The year she died the papers were highly critical of the amount of time she was spending on holidays.

There can be multiple Dowager Queens, as it just means Queen who was wife of the King, so both Mary and Elizabeth were.

Because their DM is dead and the OW got the crown. I think many DC wouldn't be happy with it. They should have kept it as Queen Consort but Charles won't stop pushing it. I don't think it's Camilla who's that bothered she's very laid back by all accounts.

What decision? The one the late Queen made an announced a year ago that Camilla would indeed be Queen once Charles was king? Because no other decision or change has been made since then.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 05/04/2023 17:12

The whole narrative that Camilla is unattractive is rubbish drivelled out by the tabloids. If Camilla were your neighbour or your colleague, you'd think she was a perfectly nice-looking woman.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 05/04/2023 17:14

The practice in the UK for dowager queens is just to use "Queen" and their name. But on Elizabeth II's accession, a need arose to differentiate the dowager Elizabeth from the regnant Elizabeth so Oueen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was used. In the family, the QM was always referred to as "Queen Elizabeth," while QE II, was "the Queen."

The wife of a King is the Queen. Nothing to decide!

Every Queen Consort that has ever been has been normally referred to as simply "The Queen" although their titles were always Queen Consort. Every single one if them throughout our history.

Absolutely no reason on earth why Queen Camilla is not correct, your personal feelings about her notwithstanding.

AskMeMore · 05/04/2023 17:15

Camilla is an ordinary looking woman like my next door neighbour.
People say she is unattractive because they contrast her with Diana who was very beautiful.

But she's HM the Queen anyway, no matter what her title is. The 'consort' thing is just silly.

And Diana and Charles were divorced, so even if she were alive today she still wouldn't 'get the crown'.

Their mother wouldn't have had the crown even if she weren't dead. The simple fact is that the Queen Consort is the Queen, just as was the case with previous Kings' wives going back for centuries. She became Queen the moment Queen Elizabeth died. There was , quite simply, no decision for William and Harry to be consulted on.

AskMeMore · 05/04/2023 17:16

@BMW6 Although that is true, the public were promised that she would never be called Queen. So you it is not surprising some people are unhappy. They do not yet realise the Palace lies whenever it suits them.

For heaven's sake

This thread is just getting ridiculous now

CarolinaInTheMorning · 05/04/2023 17:22

The public wasn't promised anything. Why do people keep repeating this nonsense ad nauseum? The future title of Camilla was stated as an intention at the time. Intentions change. Plus anyone with basic notions of how language works would have picked up from that wording that the door had been left open for a change if later circumstances supported it. Which they have.

I remember what was said. No such promise was made!

Nor should such a thing be done. You must not fuck about with The Crown on the basis that some people are unhappy that they preferred a dead woman.

It's not a popularity contest. You don't get to vote for your favourite.

Charles and Diana separated in 1992, and divorced in 1996. Diana died in 1997. Camilla retired as royal OW well over a quarter of a century ago before she ‘got the crown’.

AskMeMore · 05/04/2023 17:25

@BMW6 It was made. But you are right the words were not used that "we promise not to ever call her Queen".
They said she would always be known as Consort.

Nope. Was never said. It was announced she would be Queen Consort. Which means Queen. Unfortunately a lot of people aren't aware enough of titles to realise that all wives of Kings are Queen Consorts and also known as Queen [NAME] despite that being mentioned in some news reports at the time.

Announcing her as Queen Consort in no way meant she would always be addressed with that version of her title. Ludicrous how people are still claiming otherwise.

They didn’t say that at all

They literally said “The intention is for the duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the prince accedes to the throne.”

Thats it. The intention. No promises. No “but if she uses Queen instead it’ll be Queen consort”
