I’m 52 and you still ask me

Lighthearted
Went to visit my parents yesterday and dad asked if I wanted a coffee. I’ve never drunk coffee, I hate coffee, every time I go round and he offers I tell him I don’t like coffee but I’ll have a tea. He’s done it my whole life. AIBU to think it’s not that difficult to remember that your daughter has a cup of tea.
is there something that your parents ask all the time that you have told them repeatedly?
He doesn’t have dementia or anything like that.

Aw, it's just habit! My dad always asks me if I want sugar in my tea - he knows the answer but I think one day he's hoping I'll say no and have it same way he does Grin

He asks if I want sugar too, I always reply. No thanks and he answers, you’re sweet enough.

My dad visited on Boxing Day and thought I was still vegetarian. I have been vegetarian since I was 14 - I’m now 42 😳😆

olympicsrock · 02/04/2023 10:10

You might be on a diet or have learnt that you don’t need sugar in tea. That one is ok to ask… 😁

MrsSamR · 02/04/2023 10:11

When we're having dinner with my parents my Dad always asks me if I'd like red or white wine despite me never having liked white wine. Still asks every single time!

Tryphenia · 02/04/2023 10:13

Yes, but I find my parents seem to operate according to the ideas they formed about me in early childhood, which were possibly never true, certainly weren’t by the time I was in my teens, and definitely aren’t now that I’m 50.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 02/04/2023 10:14

My mum always offers me a glass of wine. I am 50 and never ever drink wine as I hate it. I am also allergic to dairy and she offers me ice cream after every meal!

rookiemere · 02/04/2023 10:15

Mine asks every single time we go if he shows put salad dressing on the communal salad. Every single time for the last 30+ years I have said no I prefer it without, but he goes "oh you'll like this salad dressing it's by Paul Newman" and on the stuff goes.

DanteThunderstone · 02/04/2023 10:16

I have been teetotal for over a decade and every member of my family still offers me alcohol.

lljkk · 02/04/2023 10:17

I have exact same problem, dad offering coffee which I loathe. I'm older than OP.

Stop complaining about your dad! I wish mine is still alive to ask me for coffee just appreciate what you've got in life.

JennyForeigner · 02/04/2023 10:29

Our dad still asks if my sister and I are vegetarian. Life-long. We're in our 40s.

xPaz · 02/04/2023 10:29

It's annoying. I would be annoyed if I wasn't offered a coffee! But my family used to get me a victoria sponge cake every year for my birthday and ever year I used to say (rudely I guess) this is not my favourite cake! I prefer coffee cake, or carrot cake. A couple of years in a row I was offered a slice of my own cake and I said no thank you. Usually watching my weight and I'd make an exception on my birthday for a cake I like! But not for a cake I don't like, a cake that is chosen with the buyer's tastes in mind and makes me cross tbh !!!

Its a light hearted thread. She is allowed to complain about her dad! I'm sorry you lost yours, however this is not about that at all. Maybe this thread isn't for you.

Twinklewonderkins · 02/04/2023 10:36

I’m also 52, I eat all veg except boiled cabbage.
my mum still puts a bit on my plate when I go for Sunday lunch “just to try”.

PritiPatelsMaker · 02/04/2023 10:36

My M always asks me if I'd like cheese sandwich. I've been allergic to milk my whole life.

Imgoingslightlymadd · 02/04/2023 10:45

If I'm working today. Yes dad I am, I work everyday 😅

Pollywoddles · 02/04/2023 10:47

My Mother always declares ‘you don’t like carrots’ when she’s dishing up dinner.

I’ve never had an issue with carrots, I see her very regularly.

WimpoleHat · 02/04/2023 10:48

To be fair, I use “a coffee” as a generic term for a drink, so might he mean it in that sense? (Eg to the plumber - “would you like a coffee?”, fully expecting he might ask for tea or water or whatever. Or I’ll say “I’m meeting Claire for a coffee” when I mean we are going to a cafe and I drink tea and she drinks hot chocolate. That sort of thing.)

Maybe he’s thinking you’ll one day you might discover your love of coffee so he asks just in case 😁

Findyourneutralspace · 02/04/2023 10:50

Once, when I was 9, I pretended the reason I was late home from my friend’s house was because I didn’t know the clocks had changed. Every time the clocks go forwards or back my mum texts me to remind me. I’m 46.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 02/04/2023 10:51

Aww my Dad still did this , I;m 56 and vegetarian since I was 14 .
We'd be out in the shops and he's be "Go and choose yourself some cold meat"

"What sort of cold meat do vegetarians eat then Father of Mine"?

"Ham"?

"Ok , ham for vegetarians , lets see now ......."

(And my Dad had never heard of Quorn/other vegan meat )

I could see the sales staff smiling thinking "Is that old boy going to end up in the freezer " ?

CherryPieface · 02/04/2023 10:52

My dad is exactly the same! Coffee, red wine, am I working today. Funny how it’s so common! I’m 51 and on my way to see my parents. This thread has made me smile

Schmutter · 02/04/2023 10:52
