I’m 52 and you still ask me

Lighthearted
Went to visit my parents yesterday and dad asked if I wanted a coffee. I’ve never drunk coffee, I hate coffee, every time I go round and he offers I tell him I don’t like coffee but I’ll have a tea. He’s done it my whole life. AIBU to think it’s not that difficult to remember that your daughter has a cup of tea.
is there something that your parents ask all the time that you have told them repeatedly?
He doesn’t have dementia or anything like that.

Milk in tea. I haven't had milk in tea for 45 years but my dad still 'checks' every time he makes a cuppa.
Ferrro Roche - I specifically said I didn't like them. I get a box every Christmas without fail with the 'I'm sure you said you liked them'. And so the cycle continues every year!

Schmutter · 02/04/2023 10:55

My friend texts me, ‘let’s meet for cof’.

I’ve never drunk coffee in my life. It’s just shorthand for meeting at the John Lewis cafe.

Ambertonix · 02/04/2023 10:55

Virtually every time i see him my dad asks "How old are you now?" Like im 8 years old or something. Im actually 50! He always follows it up with "You'll be catching me up soon!" Dad is 77 and the chances of me catching him up are fairly remote! I humour him though, obviously, he is my dad!

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 02/04/2023 10:55

Common ones are that I don't like mushrooms or quiche. Never have. Every time I visit, my mum, a veggie, offers quiche, mushrooms, or quiche with mushrooms in it. I am in my 40s.

glas house · 02/04/2023 10:55

My mother still asks once I a while if I'd like an omelette. I've been allergic to eggs since I was a small child 😩.

MumDadBingoBlueyy · 02/04/2023 10:56

Every Easter without fail my mum serves lamb and then asks why I’m not eating it. I remind her I’ve not been able to eat lamb without getting an upset stomach for as long as I can remember 🤣

Good job there’s always plenty of vegetables 🥕

Aww my Dad still did this , I;m 56 and vegetarian since I was 14 .
We'd be out in the shops and he's be "Go and choose yourself some cold meat"

"What sort of cold meat do vegetarians eat then Father of Mine"?

"Ham"?

"Ok , ham for vegetarians , lets see now ......."

(And my Dad had never heard of Quorn/other vegan meat )

I could see the sales staff smiling thinking "Is that old boy going to end up in the freezer " ?

My DD is vegetarian and my mum has asked more than once if she eats quiche Lorraine. Reminds me of The Royle Family when nanna asks if Anthony’s vegetarian girlfriend can eat wafer thin ham 😂

Years ago ( I was about 24yo) I said to my Dad I wanted an Easter Egg

He bought me a ceramic rabbit that you stuffed with cotton wool balls and pulled them out its "tail" (bum)

Better for my teeth Grin

My Dad is no longer here , and I totally get the "Lighthearted"

NorthernSpirit · 02/04/2023 10:57

I’m the same age. Every time my mum asks me if I want a cup of tea she asks for f I take sugar.

In 52 years I’ve never taken sugar in tea or coffee. It does my head in every single time!

anerki10 · 02/04/2023 11:01

I think this is a wonderful thread. It's not complaining in a negative way. It's sweet. My Gramps always used to offer me a glass of wine. I don't drink and hate wine. But still, he offered it to me every time. He's passed away now but I think of it fondly.

WhatTheHeckyPeck · 02/04/2023 11:02

My dad without fail every year would ask "you like cucumbers don't you Hecky...I've got some ready to pick" and without fail every year my reply would be "no dad, I don't". See also sprouts, marrows and courgettes.

To be fair I ask my friends if they want to meet for coffee and I bloody hate the stuff.Grin

luckylavender · 02/04/2023 11:06

My Dad always asks if I want gravy which I haven't eaten since I was about 12. I'm over 60.

Tangofandango · 02/04/2023 11:07

I do the grandchildrens’ school run every morning so am out of the house by 7.30. Every evening my mum, who lives with me, says “you don’t have to be up early tomorrow do you?” Yes mum, I have to be up early every day!

Stop complaining about your dad! I wish mine is still alive to ask me for coffee just appreciate what you've got in life.

My dad is also no longer alive, it doesn't stop me remembering his annoying, yet at the same time, endearing ways.

thatsn0tmyname · 02/04/2023 11:10

I told mum I was going to the teachers' strike march in London and mum mentioned tube strikes. Later that day, my younger brother (who is single and has never moved out) messages me about the tubes. I'm forty frigging nine😡

Ffsmakeitstop · 02/04/2023 11:11

I think I've started doing this. My adult dd comes for dinner occasionally and I always say "you don't like cabbage do you?" And the answer is always "yes mum I do".
I've been feeding her 33 years. Why don't I know?

My dad visited on Boxing Day and thought I was still vegetarian. I have been vegetarian since I was 14 - I’m now 42 😳😆

Am I missing something? He thought you were still vegetarian. You are still a vegetarian. What did he get wrong?

Me and my friends always "meet for coffee" but only one of us is actually a coffee drinker. It just sounds better than "meet for tea" although "meet for a cuppa" would work I guess!

I’m genuinely sorry that your dad is no longer alive and I can assure you that I am extremely appreciative that both of my parents are still alive and in relatively good health. If you read the comments posted you will see that everyone is fondly referring to things that their parent/s do or did that we love to hate. There may be something that your dad did in the past that at the time made you roll your eyes as you told him the same answer again, maybe not.

When it rains, my dad always asks me “Where’s your “mac”?!” 🌧️ Even though I had never owned a mac in my life 😂 I finally, at the grand old age of 42, own a mac!

Ca1yps0 · 02/04/2023 11:15

Ach, parents. My mum has a wardrobe full of pristine power suits and hideous shoes from the 80s that she still invites me to choose from whenever I visit.

Maybe her granddaughters will bite her hand off. Or who knows, her grandsons.

bitcharming · 02/04/2023 11:16

He watches Freinds on repeat. Its the only explanation.

I'm sorry about your dad, I've lost mine too, and I miss him terribly, but this is a lighthearted thread where the OP is jokingly letting out some frustration, which many people feel occasionally.

OP - My mum was baffled a few weeks ago when I turned down cauliflower cheese. 'But you always liked cauliflower', umm no mum I never liked it, I only used to eat it because you made me 🙄

I've also been with DH for 9 years, FIL still can't get his head around the fact I like coffee... just because I turned one down, once, about 7 years ago 😆. But then I'm a heathen in their eyes as I don't drink tea... (disclaimer: they are generally lovely people)

My thoughts exactly! The crap people moan about is ridiculous

bitcharming · 02/04/2023 11:20

To add to the thread, my mom always starts folding clothes from the permanent washing pile when she comes round. But we have really small drawers so I have to re-fold smaller and tighter but I love it. She's a lovely mom.
