£3k for 1 Week in the LAKES!

£3k
1 week
August Holiday

Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help.

Booking our second holiday for the 6 week break.

We're having our big holiday in May to Ikos, and so for this holiday I was thinking of a week in the Lakes to our usual spot;

Lodge
Hot tub
Village location

But its £2k for a week in August and we will need a grand for spends and £3k for a week in the lakes seems ridiculous.

Any ideas on what we can do with a £3k budget?

I'm tempted by another all inclusive abroad, but obviously a lot less luxurious than Ikos (as at least it would mean guaranteed sun and I'm not having to cook or unload a dishwasher for a week!)

Travel a bit further north to Dumfries and Galloway.
So much more for your money and much quieter

These glamping pods are situated between two unfashionable towns in the East Midlands but they do provide hot tubs and I think the countryside close by is lovely. There are options for nice family bike rides, horse riding, microlight flights just a short distance away and the 'proper' peak district is only 30-40 minutes away and you also have the option of visiting two local cities.

I live there.
No idea why anyone falls for this, as the yrs go by, more people come and have their pockets shaved off! Many of these properties don't even have a decent bread knife and you are going to get the bare minimum. Everyone will argue over parking and possibly go home more exhausted then when they arrived.

You might get rain, you will be trapped in crowds on too small streets that dont have the space for people because pavements are too narrow the roads are too loud and stinky. Everyone gets stressed, and rightfully so, because of this.
Unless you are a dedicated fell walker i would honestly not bother. Apart from beatrix potter and a cheesy wordsworth museum there's pretty much nothing here, and good luck finding any authentic shops or pubs, theyre all corporate tat now.
It is a stunning setting, yes, but the holiday market is a bit crap. Whenever friends or family come to visit me in the summer months they always leave with higher blood pressure Grin

I would much prefer Wales, the Dales or the south east, myself, but I understand it's all half a dozen of one and so on...

We have 10 nights in Cornwall with our own private outdoor heated swimming pool and bbq hut for £1k

You are getting an amazing bargain. Are you staying at your parents’ house?

OtterDisgrace · 26/03/2023 17:58

Plus, there's been a HUGE change in the type of visitor up here in recent years, too.
It's gone a bit glam-chav, so to speak, so just a head's up! Gone are the rucksacks and art&crafts -The crusty middles have scuppered off in search of some actual peace and culture. You'll be hard pressed to locate a bar that isn't overpriced Tapa's or metropolitan bland coffee hut.

The soul has just been torn out and replaced by horrendous acrylic canvas prints of those awful highland cows.

snazzlealpaca · 26/03/2023 17:59

I've found that self catering in Cornwall is looking fairly reasonably priced this year. For example, there are lots of 2 bedroom lodges (no hot tub but right on the beach) here for around £1000-1200 in August:
https://www.tomsholidays.co.uk/accommodation/
It did pop up with a 20% off offer too, not sure if that is already included.

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 18:05

@OtterDisgrace we go for the hillwalking/mountain biking but even so August is a hideous experience as one still needs to drive on the roads/go to the supermarket or whatever.
I've seen the changes to the area as you've described and it must be really sad as a resident.

We stopped in last summer to collect a bike, DH was behind our van with the back doors open putting the new purchase away and some family were so intent on squeezing their car in so that they could go and eat the picnic they presumably had in the Booths bags that they came within mms of squashing the doors and poor DH with them. When I shouted at them they pretended to be deaf and just wandered off with their plastic carrier bags.

Happy holidays!

Well done at your attempt to put people off your area! In the Dales you'll find many of the same problems as in the Lake DIstrict however, even when we lived there in the 70s it could get very crowded in Summer.

mumda · 26/03/2023 18:07

Have a housekeeper at home for a week. Go on lovely days out.

Sameiam · 26/03/2023 18:09

I wouldn’t book another all inclusive as after ikos it won’t feel as good. We did it a couple years ago and had the vip upgrade thing and a bungalow and it’s ruined other inclusives for me 😂 although we had no kids so one of the best bits of the vip bit was a kid free beach with big four poster beds

There is only 3 of us, there is a double bedroom and sofa bed in the lounge.

philautia · 26/03/2023 18:10

That's a bonkers price! How far are you willing to travel? If you love the lakes, presumably you're there for the scenery. Northumberland, then Borders or the Highlands are all beautiful and you'd not be forking out £3k.

Bellavida99 · 26/03/2023 18:11

you coil get a cottage in Northumberland for around £1000 and have much more space, wonderful scenery and world heritage sites

flutterbyebaby · 26/03/2023 18:15

What the heck are you going to be eating with that food budget? Gold plated sausages?

FamilyLife2point4 · 26/03/2023 18:18

I’ll be honest - 3k for a family in Europe is about the going rate - you’ll get similar value elsewhere but I would personally spend 5 days on site with a meal plan at Disneyland Paris
With 2 days in partner hotels to visit Paris attractions - 3k will cover this ❤️

blanketblank · 26/03/2023 18:26

Scottish Borders or south west Scotland much cheaper and less busy, still good for walking etc.

ilovesooty · 26/03/2023 18:28

Maireas · 26/03/2023 17:00

Whaaaat?! I've gone hill walking there and walked around the Lakes and it's just beautiful. Up on the mountains, breathtaking. Stunning. However, I understand that tastes differ. I would not wish to revisit either Wales or Cornwall, so it just shows we're all different! (Plus I'd rather have my teeth drilled than go to Lanzarote or the Canary Islands...)

Yes, we're all different. I took my mother to the Lake District on holiday once. I hated it. I'm just finishing a week in Lanzarote and I've had a lovely time.

I'm another who's puzzled by the £200 food shop and a potential massive expenditure for meals on top of that.

Settling in so I can click all these links later (although mine is booked for 1250 in Cornwall, with hot tub) Grin

The Lakes isn't ideal for young children, maybe try Anglesey instead.

I'm guessing normal sausages, but from Booths and Cranstons rather than Aldi and Lidl. And a few locally produced artisanal tipples. It's not difficult to spend less, but if money was no object I could easily spend £200 on groceries and £100 a day on eating out in the Lake District.

Anglesey is wonderful, spent a lot of my summers there as a child, my nanna lived there luckily enough. First place I ever saw shooting stars, magical.

We have a lodge booked in August in the lakes with hot tub, we paid £825.

i did shop around alot and it’s always cheaper going direct with an owner than through any website like booking.com or air bnb

Oh I so miss Booths, and yes I could spend a small fortune on not a lot there when we stayed on our boat.
