£3k for 1 Week in the LAKES!

£3k
1 week
August Holiday

Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help.

Booking our second holiday for the 6 week break.

We're having our big holiday in May to Ikos, and so for this holiday I was thinking of a week in the Lakes to our usual spot;

Lodge
Hot tub
Village location

But its £2k for a week in August and we will need a grand for spends and £3k for a week in the lakes seems ridiculous.

Any ideas on what we can do with a £3k budget?

I'm tempted by another all inclusive abroad, but obviously a lot less luxurious than Ikos (as at least it would mean guaranteed sun and I'm not having to cook or unload a dishwasher for a week!)

Hi, an alternative within the Lake District could be to check out hostels and bunkhouses through Independent Hostels - independenthostels.co.uk - e.g. look for sole use, or those with family rooms. I've spotted a week for up to 6 in August reduced to £700 at one of the locations.

jumpinsback · 26/03/2023 15:38

In fact, a quick Jet 2 search came up quite a bit below £3k for all inclusive in Mallorca for a week in a decent hotel...

Another one who doesn't understand how you're spending £200 a week on a food shop, then need money for lunches and dinners out each day 🤨

So £200 on breakfast?! 🤣

£200 is more than we'd spend on all food, toiletries, cleaning products etc each week.

redskylight · 26/03/2023 15:41

I'd look at a cheaper property in the UK (we paid £1K for a week last year for places with 3 bed and a hot tub; refuse to believe prices have gone up by so much that you can't get a 2 bed for under £1K now.

And look at your spending budget. You have 2 small children who will be with a decent playground and a picnic lunch and can be catered for cheaply.

fluffi · 26/03/2023 15:43

You would get a much better deal going all inclusive somewhere like Canaries or Turkey.

I looked at going to Lakes last year but the prices for decent hotels with nice rooms and good reviews were ridiculous! (I don’t want to cook or clean on holiday and I want to stay somewhere nice with a gym!)

Went to a lovely resort hotel in Lanzarote instead! 😎

Verbena17 · 26/03/2023 15:45

Just typed in the details to Cumbrian-cottages and there’s loads for well under £1000 for 1/8 for 7 nights. Like around £700.

Not comparing like with like though. Presumably all in one room in Majorca and no private hot tub. Also quality of AI food not likely to be up to Lake District pub standards.

However it will be a lot warmer and there will be swimming pool and a beach and AI pretty darned handy with young DCs.

I suppose it depends on what's important to you.

We have 10 nights in Cornwall with our own private outdoor heated swimming pool and bbq hut for £1k

In august? Link or it didn't happen.

Beastieboys · 26/03/2023 15:48

£200 for a food shop for 2 adults & 2 small children and £100 a day to eat 2 meals out.....bloody expensive breakfast & snack stuff at £30 a day, crikey we manage on the £30 all in per day max

Hayliebells · 26/03/2023 15:51

My experience of holidays in the UK during the summer, is almost uniformly bad, unfortunately. I'd like to go on holiday in the UK, for reasons of convenience, supporting UK business, it's better for the environment not to fly etc. But there's no way I'd spend that much on it. You're taking a real risk with the weather, and it's so busy that driving around, visiting attractions, eating out etc is so painful, it doesn't feel like a holiday. Yes going to places like North Yorkshire are quieter and cheaper, but the weather can be beyond awful. When we've been, we've felt lucky the few times we've had good weather, other times it's rained loads or been freezing cold. There's no way I'd spend more than £1k on a week somewhere in the UK, which pretty much rules out anywhere in the summer holidays.

jamdonut · 26/03/2023 15:59

Try Yorkshire...Moors, Dales, Wolds or Coast! August is insanely expensive wherever you go!

Dymaxion · 26/03/2023 16:02

TBH , a week in the Lakes in August with children of those ages will be a nightmare, lots of sitting in traffic, trying to find parking, fighting for seats in cafes and pubs and no guarantee the weather will be nice.

I would probably do a week in France either with someone like Eurocamp with lots of child friendly facilities on site or a gite with its own pool.

Deathbyfluffy · 26/03/2023 16:03

Try the Canary Islands. Very reasonable and guaranteed sun

Is it just me but I have never heard of the lakes!

I don't know for sure, but I suspect most British people have heard of the Lake District, it's always been popular. Not just for fans of Wordsworth or Beatrix Potter.

Thanks 😊 we originally booked via a booking site but now the owners let us book direct after that for a lot less. It is near liskeard in the middle of nowhere but easy to get to the likes of Looe, Polperro, fowey etc for days out.

Well clearly there was a back story. Why didn't you mention that in your first post?

It is like comparing apples and pears.

Livelovebehappy · 26/03/2023 16:09

I’d rather sit in my garden for a week during August school hols than go holidaying anywhere. UK and the rest of the holiday destinations are absolutely grid locked at that time of year. So yabu to pay so much to holiday with so many like minded people. Although I get you have little choice with school aged children.

MynameisJune · 26/03/2023 16:10

Is this a stealth boast for how much you can spend on holidays this year? Considering how much the Ikos Olivia costs I’m surprised you’re about the cost.

Elphame · 26/03/2023 16:11

Good grief - North Wales is a lot cheaper and much less busy. Great beaches too

Peak August week around here is about £1000 for a holiday cottage

ScentOfSawdust · 26/03/2023 16:11

£1,200 for a week in our usual spot in the Lakes with 2 adults and two older teenagers. No hot tub but the grounds run down to the water, so we’ll be swimming/kayaking/paddle boarding when the water is still and there’s no one else on the lake but ducks.

We do not scrimp at all, but our spending on food and sundries are nothing like £1000.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 26/03/2023 16:15

Just had a quick look on hoseasons and this is what it came back with 1 week from 7th August for 4 people.

£3k for 1 Week in the LAKES!

MissDollyMix · 26/03/2023 16:15

Doesn’t surprise me in the slightest! We were meant to be having a uk holiday this year (not the Lakes as they are awful in peak season) but when I checked out the prices of U.K. self catering accommodation (for 2 adults, 1 teen, 1 child) the costs were (in my opinion) outrageous, especially when you consider that on top of accommodation you still have to pay for all your food, fuel to get there and days out. So, we’ve booked a 5* hotel, half board, in Tenerife for the same money.

RuthTopp · 26/03/2023 16:16

I live in the lakes - 10 miles from Keswick - the garage is yours - any date you like - £150 ( plus a fry up breakfast) - as many people you like ! 😅

Seriously the price you've been quoted is scandalous and tbh , if it's anything this these past years , the hotspots to visit are rammed and not enjoyable due to crowds.

S72 · 26/03/2023 16:16

I spent all of August travelling around Albania in 2021. Spent less than £1500 including flights.

£3k for one week in the Lakes is ridiculous.

£200 food shop
Circa £100 left a day
To cover pub lunch & tea and an activity
Could easily be more than £1k spends thinking about it!

Does the lodge have cooking facilities? If so, why not have at least some meals there?
