£3k for 1 Week in the LAKES!

£3k
1 week
August Holiday

Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can help.

Booking our second holiday for the 6 week break.

We're having our big holiday in May to Ikos, and so for this holiday I was thinking of a week in the Lakes to our usual spot;

Lodge
Hot tub
Village location

But its £2k for a week in August and we will need a grand for spends and £3k for a week in the lakes seems ridiculous.

Any ideas on what we can do with a £3k budget?

I'm tempted by another all inclusive abroad, but obviously a lot less luxurious than Ikos (as at least it would mean guaranteed sun and I'm not having to cook or unload a dishwasher for a week!)

If you're spending £200 on a food shop, why do you need to spend almost £100 a day on pub lunches and meals out?

You can do the Lakes for much cheaper, you just need to compromise somewhere:

Cheaper/smaller accommodation without a hot tub
Picnics instead of pub lunches
Stay slightly outside the National Park (lower prices) and then drive to where you want to go.
Spend a bit more on the food shop and do some quick/easy dinners that don't involve cooking, plus a meal out and a takeaway or something.

Before moving here, we stayed in the Lakes regularly and never ate pub lunches or had daily meals out, or rented cottages with hot tubs. Yes, it's nice to do those things but it won't be cheap!

Why do people insist on doing this on these kinds of threads! She’s not asking for tips on economising, she wants to know if there are better value options for a £3k holiday than the lakes.

lots of people, myself included, do not go away to cook for the week, part of the luxury is to eat out. £200 shop could easily be some booze, picnic things and a bit of food.

A £200 food shop for 2 adults and 2 very young children is ridiculous if you’re also budgeting £100 for pub lunches & tea each day! £200 could easily cover a weeks food including lunch and tea.

But it doesn’t have to. I could easily spend that. Because I can. Not everyone is on the same income. Not everyone is struggling. I understood “tea” to be cups of tea (and possibly cake) on a tea room. Dinner is what I call the evening meal. So the £200 is for breakfast and dinner and £100 a day for lunch, tea, cake, ice cream, snacks, etc.

We're going to North Spain in summer. Green and nice coast. You can possibly get something nice around there within budget? I haven't looked at accommodation yet. I really should.

Well, it's the Lake District, which is just stunning.
Still pricey, but they do spend a lot on food.

I grew up in a famously stunning region elsewhere in these islands and the Lake District is a bit underwhelming TBH! I genuinely don't get it...

Given OPs username, she's likely Northern, therefore tea = what you call dinner.

Should add that DH is from Lancashire & quite sentimental about the LD so this is a bone of contention in our marriage 😂 I just feel that the UK isn't actually that lacking in the lakes + mountains + rain department and it rarely costs £3k

StopitSarah · 26/03/2023 16:56

@Zuffe no, she said “Thanks 😊 we originally booked via a booking site but now the owners let us book direct after that for a lot less. It is near liskeard in the middle of nowhere but easy to get to the likes of Looe, Polperro, fowey etc for days out.”

@maddening I’d love to know the commercial link to this place - even at more than £1000 it seems amazing for Cornwall!

Whaaaat?! I've gone hill walking there and walked around the Lakes and it's just beautiful. Up on the mountains, breathtaking. Stunning. However, I understand that tastes differ. I would not wish to revisit either Wales or Cornwall, so it just shows we're all different! (Plus I'd rather have my teeth drilled than go to Lanzarote or the Canary Islands...)

Blueeyes13 · 26/03/2023 17:00

Thank you, I will try that!

Bournetilly · 26/03/2023 17:02

Personally I would book another all inclusive resort, I’m sure you could get a 4* for that. Then do a long weekend in the lakes later in the year, that price is crazy.

GreenShadow · 26/03/2023 17:04

I'm another one who doesn't understand the £200 food bill on top of supposedly eating out each day.
Three adults in our house would spend nowhere near that.

Surely there's not much to spend that sort of cash on in the Lake District? People go there to walk and admire the scenery, not got to theme parks or whatever.

Sorry, that was meant for @wordler

£200 on a food shop is a lot but I’d imagine it will be a chunk on alcohol and soft drinks along with breakfast stuff and snacks , chuck in some nice cheese and some charcuterie for nights in the accommodation and it soon mounts up - people tend to be more spendy on holiday I know we spend more when we rent a cottage

I will pm you the booking.com page but I have no commercial link personally if that's what you mean- we just went when we were coming out of lockdown as I wanted a place with its own pool as other friends had gone to holiday parks and swimming pools were all closed still, luckily found this and love it so have been back since and going again this summer - and booking directly is cheaper. It isn't posh at all but nice and cosy imo and the pool and bbq hut are amazing.

orangesandlemonsthebellsofstc · 26/03/2023 17:17

There are more budget ways to do the lakes, even if you want to stick with that accomodation. Eat out only once daily and try to do a couple more frugal options like sharing a pizza, having waters etc. Get ice lollies for freezer in cottage/cabin/lodge. The lakes can be well enjoyed pitching up at a beach for a few hours with an ice cream or drink, a little boat ride etc.

Agree though, especially if renting a unit, holidaying in the UK can be very expensive.

maddening · 26/03/2023 17:24

Zuffe · 26/03/2023 16:31

There isn't one. Read their second post. It is a friend's house.

No, we do not know the owners personally - we first booked through booking.com and then the owners gave us their business card so we can book direct - and it is cheaper direct than through a booking site, probably by about £300. Our first holiday was in May 2021 and that was 750 for the week,.then last August booking direct was 850ish for a week when it would have been around 1100 ish for the same week. This year we are doing 10 days as it incorporates the bank holiday weekend and we don't want to travel in the hell that is bank holiday traffic 🤣🤣

Mixedberrygenderfluidmuffin · 26/03/2023 17:34

I love the Lakes, we go for at least a week every year, but can't stand crowds. Luckily it is possible to get cottages in more remote places (ie not a short walk to 'attractions', unless you count the hills as attractions) at affordable prices. We paid £750 for a week in a cottage for 5 with a view of Wastwater last August. It was over two miles from the nearest shop/pub/civilisation though. Nothing to do except walk up hills and enjoy the views. T'was wonderful.

MairzyDoats · 26/03/2023 17:38

I can send you the link to my rather lovely little holiday cottage smack bang in the middle of beautiful Barnard Castle if you like? Sleeps 4, one enormous king size bedroom and a cute little bunk bed room for the children. Loads to do locally, loads of good places to eat and accessible to the lakes if you wanted to do some stuff there too. We go to Lowther Castle with the children and that's wonderful. Cost in August is about £500 for a week I think.

MairzyDoats · 26/03/2023 17:39

Oh and if you book directly through me it is at least 20% cheaper.

Chilloutsnow · 26/03/2023 17:41

Would be eye watering to spend that and then it pisses it down for the week. I refuse to spend such an amount in this country.

Maireas · 26/03/2023 17:41

Sounds bliss, @Mixedberrygenderfluidmuffin - plus I've found that even when the Lakes seem busy and crowded, once you get walking high up, there's hardly anyone around!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 26/03/2023 17:44

I know it's a mumsnet favourite (but for good reason) Efteling in a Holland is a lovely holiday for families. As are all the centre parcs in Europe. Must more reasonable too.

FrostyFifi · 26/03/2023 17:45

I love the Lakes but you couldn't pay me to during summer school holidays.

We tend to go to France instead.

kitsuneghost · 26/03/2023 17:46

You could get an all inclusive in say tenerife or benidorm for

2 people for 2k but it wouldn't be a nice one. Spends would be similar.

Absolutely. No guarantee of Weather.

Look.on Hoseasons last minute deals and dont have a hot tub.
