People who identify as Trans Abled …

TequilaSunrose · 19/03/2023 19:54

We have all head about transgender, but recently I’ve heard more and more about transableism. These are healthy people who think they were born in the wrong body and that they should have been born into a disabled persons body.

Surely this is the line. People cannot identify as disabled. People cannot pretend to be disabled. This is the point we must say that this is now mental illness. You cannot just go around identifying as whatever you want.

AIBU to say this is ridiculous and must be stamped out and the fact it even has a name is insanity.

Sorry is someone has already poated, I haven't rtft...this isn't a new thing. Five this fascinating article from 2000 a read and boggle.

Agree with others who have said this is no more outlandish than any other claims to be something other than what one really is.

Where have you heard about it? This sounds made up. There is no link.

I commented above - I saw a documentary about this many years ago but I've not seen anything recently.

A quick google shows an article from the National Post in 2015 which basically says the same as what I remember from the documentary - healthy people were injuring limbs in an attempt to get surgeons to agree to amputate etc.

It's definitely true - but I think it's exceedingly rare.

What a transparent excuse for a transphobic pile on. Why the flying fuck does anyone care what anyone else is doing to their own bodies?! Don't like it? Great, don't do it to yourself then. Jesus wept. Get a life.

Does anyone who doesn’t want to have their perfectly functioning arm cut off honestly believe that someone who does want to isn’t suffering from a pretty serious mental illness? Surely even if we don’t have a way to treat it for now the long term aim should be to find a way fix whatever is causing the individuals delusion and not to maim them?

Look up body integrity identity disorder, bits on google -

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3326051/

rare, but a definite thing, with its roots thought to lie in differences within the brain (think one link says they think linked to issues with parietal lobe).

Of course, diagnosis by WebMD and Tiktok might mean that increasing numbers of people are deciding they have it.. but still think it must be pretty unusual.

I think there's a big difference between people who are genuinely mentally ill with psychosis and severe depression and these transabled people who appear to be suffering from some sort of neuroses. People in other parts of the world can't afford to be so neurotic about things, they're too busy just trying to survive. I'd hazard a guess that these situations only occur in western society. People need to get a grip, it's becoming seriously embarrassing.

Well, Cotard's syndrome is found in some people with severe depression. it is a psychosis (Psychotic depression). You don't get much more severely ill than that.

Some of these other ideas regarding altered reality could be found in people with psychosis or severe depression. And psychosis and severe depression can be found in other societies than Western.

AndTheSurveySays · 19/03/2023 22:18

The woman that blinded herself did an interview about it on the Dr Phil show years ago. She said that from a young age age she always felt that she should've been born blind and would often pretend to be.

DoubleShotEspresso · 19/03/2023 22:18

When can we start identifying this nonsense for what it is?

Fraudulent behaviour that should and could warrant mental health assessments and sectioning.

GoingMadQuickly · 19/03/2023 22:20

Desertbarncat · 19/03/2023 20:00

I’ve never heard of this, do you have examples of how it is becoming an issue?

Nor sure if it has already been mentioned but sounds like this:

RumandSpinach · 19/03/2023 22:21

I knew someone who wanted their arm gone. They very much wanted it gone and worked quite hard to remove it. Very gruesome.

It's really hard to understand but definitely a real and distressing feeling. I think there is space between folk like this and people who campaign for a DID/Eating Disorder/other mental illness diagnosis.

I think in this case of this, most people do!

Although I'd be hesitant of describing any mental illness as nonsense (or indeed lunacy as someone said up thread), it clearly has massive implications for the patient and they deserve the correct, evidence based treatment and respect as much as anyone else with any illness or disorder.

The Dr Phil episode with the woman that blinded herself ^

SaysRelaaxxx · 19/03/2023 22:23

The ignorance on this thread is eye opening. Didn’t realise Daily Mail readers had another place to hang out online! Before you spread this hateful rhetoric without a shred of personal experience, please look to meet and talk with at least one real life person who can give you some kind of personal insight. I’m astounded by the comments here.

Agreed

You might not have psychosis if you put bleach in your eyes, but I would be very surprised if you didn't have a personality disorder.

Sectioning won't help but this will still be a person who very desperately needs treatment

Bryzzle · 19/03/2023 22:24

Obviously I wasn't referring to people maiming themselves with chainsaws. As if this thread is anything to do with genuine care for humanity.
If that were the case all those so deeply concerned would instead be researching and firing emails off to their local MPs or other representatives. I'm a pretty GC individual but this is such a sad thinly veiled excuse. Enjoy what's left of mother's day, take a breath, and put down the phone

cherrychappstick · 19/03/2023 22:26

I'm really confused 🤯

Spambod · 19/03/2023 22:27

Sadly this isn’t new. The unquestioning acceptance and promotion of transgenderism inevitably leads to other forms of identity politics. We have people identifying as animals and most worryingly as babies and young children. So many people have highlighted this and been shot down and called bigoted.
can you imagine a grown man saying he is a toddler and wanting childcare…. Don’t think it’s going to happen? Think again.
children have been put on puberty blockers, teenagers have had healthy body parts removed by the nhs because they say they are the opposite sex ( the tavi stock clinic has only now been closed because of whistleblowers and was audited once in 20 years) What is the difference in saying you want a leg or arm or eyes removed?

StressedToTheMaxxx · 19/03/2023 22:27

I'd say that people can 'identify' as whatever they like but legally, you'll be treated as what you are on paper.

ticklemepinker · 19/03/2023 22:27

Sst1234 you are not right. I visited a family in a very remote part of a developing country where the daughter in law was (to my mind) having a psychotic episode, but to hers/theirs, identified as/thought she was a monkey. She was swinging in trees. It was completely horrifying and shocking and they were trying to find someone to cure her - they believed she had been bewitched into this.
It was terrible and not a whim. Mental illness in poor countries w no access to medicine or therapies is beyond terrible.

You're right, it's a leering pile on.

marchella · 19/03/2023 22:28

That "doctor" who put the eyedrops in should be in gaol. Also, note how she says she found a group online. It's always the same.

Not sure if this has already been shared either, BBC Horizon documentary from 2000 entitled Body Dysmorphia: Complete Obsession

OK OP, I'm wading in here as someone who is visually impaired.

The lady mentioned, is BLIND. Doesn't matter how it happened, if you have vision below a certain level, you are medically classified as blind. Your comments referring to "naturally blind" are NASTY and offensive. I say this as someone born with a sight condition that affects every aspect of life. Do you know what was written on my registration document by the consultant? Partially blind. So kindly stop, you have no right to tell someone they cannot use the word blind.

Back on topic, I am really, really uncomfortable with this idea of trans-able. I wouldn't wish my disability and the issues it causes on anyone. Anyone who WANTS that, needs serious mental health support - and yes, that should be available on the NHS.

So where is the line then? Adults identifying as children to get into primary schools? Identifying as another race? Identifying as the owner of someone else's property therefore it's theirs? Identifying as a Dr? A god? A predatory animal with killing instincts?

Sounds ridiculous right? Because it is.

These people believe they are something they are not. This is a mental illness. A dangerous mental illness.

By transphobic I assume you are referring to the transwoman debate? So I'll clear it up for you. A transwoman is just that. A Transwoman. Not a woman. It's not transphobic to say this. Transwomenn deserve the same respect and dignity as everybody else. That said, trans rights do not trump women's rights. When you start to erode the rights of women to satisfy the feelings of biological males (no matter how they "see themselves" or feel) you are going backwards.
