Are you in favour of censorship?

I think some tweets 'cross a line' - particularly when the tweeter is under contract.

Not all complaints get nowhere

Indeed -
Gary Lineker and Twitter complaint upheld here last year:

Is that a yes?

Thanks so much for that op

No, no, I have drawn a very tight line around the views that I hold and it is perfectly fine for anyone to tweet those, but if someone tweets something else, well they have crossed the line and should be suitably punished.

Alan Sugar has deleted a tweet depicting Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in a car alongside Adolf Hitler, following calls for him to "disown" it.

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell had appealed to the businessman to delete it and "bring people together".

Shadow cabinet minister Jon Trickett called the post "grossly misjudged and deeply offensive".

I see that both John McDonnell and Jon Trickett are defending Gary Lineker today.

I suppose anything that brings the BBC down a bit is a good thing

User1396390 · 11/03/2023 13:10

I see loads of the shitty football stuff has been pulled now😂😂

It's amusing to imagine Lineker and co are thinking 'we'll hit 'em where it hurts' and vast swathes of people who don't give a shit about football probably think an old episode of 'Bargain Hunt' is far better telly.

MargotMoon · 11/03/2023 13:22

Thanks for the link OP

As much as I dislike watching football, I understand why people like it, Bargain Hunt on the otherhand, waiting for Braverman to say something compassionate would be less painful.

It's a shame it didn't happen a couple of weeks ago, we could have been spared all those midweek FA cup matches, I nearly complained then.

A couple of hours ago you didn't have a TV licence, so why would it matter what was being shown on the BBC?

The point is, Lineker and his cronies could disappear off the face of the earth and I doubt I'd even notice.

Less controversial according to whom?

Emily Thornberry here;
Gary Lineker ‘went too far’ with migrant Bill tweet, says senior Labour MP

Didn't have Emily Thornberry being cited as the barometer of appropriate social media opinions by right wingers on my bingo card for this thread.

I wouldn't notice either.
But 100% I defend his right to speak his mind outside of his day job.

I have, I was complaining avidly upthread about having to buy a whole year whereas with the other streamers I can pay for just the bits I want so yes it does matter that on two consecutive evenings BBC showed football matches and cancelled other programmes as I can't pick and choose with their licence

Disappointing that Labour are sitting on the fence on this and not backing GL. He really did not go too far.

Clav, can you show me a tweet where Gary Linker implies an individual is comparable to Hitler?

Shall I add that I enjoy watching Gary Lineker on MOTD. I still think he should delete his controversial tweet.

To be fair, sitting quietly while the Tories create another crisis for themselves has seen Labour grow a lead in the polls that suggests they may get nearly twice as many votes at the next GE as the Tories, so if I were them I probably would be keeping quiet as well.

Yes, particularly as this is the second time in as many weeks that an argument the Tories created has overshadowed a deal that Sunak has negotiated and wants to be seen as an achievement. They could've been selling him to the electorate as a practical bloke getting things done, the grown up in the room etc. Instead they chose, well, this.
