To kick her chair during the inflight meal

CanStopWillStop · 07/03/2023 00:45

in short, red eye flight from America. The woman in front reclines her chair as soon as humanly possibly. No issue with that.

the inflight meal comes about 45mins in. She is the ONLY person in the cabin who keeps her seat reclined, bearing in mind she is sat bolt upright to eat.

I don’t believe it’s within my rights to ask her to (do the decent thing and) put her chair up so I can eat in comfort without her chair pressing against my forehead. Instead I did the petty thing and kicked her chair throughout I’m the inflight meal, so she had a taste of the discomfort that I have.

AIBU? 😂

Why wouldn't you just ask the flight attendant to sort it? That's what I always do in this situation, and it's resolved in no time. Kicking the seat just seems weirdly passive aggressive and probably not very effective.

saleorbouy · 07/03/2023 07:59

I didn't think 4year olds were allowed on Mumsnet. You behaviour is quite disturbing for an adult. Surely if something is bothering you then you have the presence of mind to politely ask that the situation is resolved. Resorting to antagonising behaviour to get you own way is not what a mature adult does. Kicking the seat if it was me in it would not make me move my seat especially if you had not even had a conversation about your discomfort. The vibration along the row must also have annoyed other passengers too.
Learn to be polite and assertive it will stand you in better spread for life than the petulant and ignorant attitude you seem to currently have!

I don't want to get into a discussion with someone so lacking in knowledge of flight etiquette so I would have got the flight attendant to do it. I wouldn't have kicked her seat but I would have had to pull myself up using her seat back every time I needed the toilet because the reduced space would affect my ability to stand unaided.

Yep we had that on a night flight when we reclined (when lights dimmed)

Man behind said it was unfair for us to recline. Meant he had no leg room. Then got up every 20 mins to use loo during the night flight. Grabbing seat back every time at maximum strength. Fun trip!

Nah you’re thinking of 2013 mumsnet … 2023 mumsnet is strictly no fun, no lightheartedness and definitely no laughter. Now do the right thing and grab your pitchfork … also try to think of a mental health condition to diagnose OP with … 😂

Sigmund Freud has already shared her prognosis… apparently there’s something very wrong with me and I appear to be spiralling 🤣😆

It is not a CHAIR. It is a SEAT.

Norriscolesbag · 07/03/2023 08:06

Just ask the flight attendant how you are meant to eat when they pass you your tray. They will tell her surely.

What's funny about it though? If there's a joke here somewhere I don't get it.

look it’s not a joke and on reflection it’s really not polite of me. I know my flight nemesis Sally probably felt harder kicks at week 32, but the MNers assessment that I’m an unhinged Bruce Lee attacking people mid-flight is defo a more likely scenario.

I’ve told DH and he will be taking me to the nearest police station when he finished work so I can turn myself in. I’m sorry if this thread offended anyone, truly I am. And I’m sorry to seat 55A, you deserve someone who can use their words better and refrain from violent outbursts.

sorry lads 🫶

if I kicked your chair sockloon, I apologise. Please recline responsibly

😂😂😂😂

ChampagneLassie · 07/03/2023 08:15

Come on even if you were mute, you could tap her shoulder and indicate. She might not speak English. Speaking is not the issue here.

KatherineJaneway · 07/03/2023 08:20

A polite 'Please can you put your chair up while we eat' is all that was required.

Assume you've been on the Wine

As the speech impediment was a drip feed and not in the OP I can only surmise that as the thread wasn't going in @CanStopWillStop's favour she suddenly remembered her debilitating impediment. Must be difficult to remember this sort of thing...

Aahhh that’s fantastic news, all these years I thought I had a stutter, turns out I’ve just been faking it all along. Thanks @ScottishLavender you have the healing hands of Jesus 🙏 so glad I shared personal details about my life online, this thread IS for sure going in my favour 🥰 can you cure my IBS too??

I’ll have to hun. Mid-flight assault carries a stiff penalty.

Look, none of us make the best of decisions when tired and jet lagged.

I had a 'celebrity' in from of me on the last red eye from the USA. They also reclined immediately and did not put their seat up for meal service. There was no point asking staff who were fawning over them like they were royalty and it was bloody annoying although I did refrain from kicking.

However I'm human whilst I have a lot of patience, I also have a temper if pushed too far. Most people do. Look, I've had a brief stint of travel induced rage in my twenties when a man reclined as soon as takeoff commenced from Dubai I think (second leg of a very long haul journey). He stretched his arms back over the seat dangling his big hairy hands in my face. I could see thick black oily looking hairs in minute detail as they gently tickled my skin. I was incensed. I smacked those hands so hard, he shot bolt upright and put his seat up. Yes violence may not always be the answer but mid takeoff when someone's furry fingers literally touch your face and you can't call staff and they don't remove them when they quite obviously can tell they are touching another human? Perfectly justifiable as far as I'm concerned but no doubt I'm the devil on here. I doubt many will admit to being less than the epitome of perfect feminine restraint.

So I'm not going to judge you because sometimes situations get the better of us all and there's none of us perfect. Fingers crossed the lady in front may have even learned some manners. The hairy handed, face touching bastard certainly did.

Oh and when the war comes OP, please be on my side 😅

Hydrangeatea · 07/03/2023 08:27

I would HAVE (not "would of" everyone) would HAVE done exactly the same, rude cow!

FoxInSocksSatOnBlocks · 07/03/2023 08:28

You can’t go through life being passive aggressive and behaving socially poorly simply because you didn’t want to speak up and then blame it on your stutter.

Didn't your parents teach you any manners?

I have a great sense of humour. Nothing about the OP is remotely funny, It is just childish 🤷‍♀️

But why is everyone so serious?! The OP isn’t, so why are posters appearing genuinely angry? Who cares, just stroll on by rather than getting genuinely cross.

Chias · 07/03/2023 08:34

Seats on aeroplanes only go back about an inch. Quite a few people recline their seat after take off and go straight to sleep for the whole flight.
Someone on a flight I was on, complained about a reclined seat. The air steward just told them that people were allowed to recline their seats during the flight. I don’t think there is a huge etiquette thing about it beyond mumsnet.

@Booksandwine80 Well, I take the "huns" as being part of @CanStopWillStop's humour. I think that she has played most of you brilliantly, and the best bit is that most of you still haven't twigged that you are being played 😁

I just 🤷🏼‍♀️if there’s something to “get” I’m glad I don’t 🤣

There's an awful lot that they can do for IBS but sadly no cure for stupid.
