No agenda I’m just interested as Kier is on LBC this morning…

For me it’s the TWAW magical thinking, and not being convinced they would prioritise average earners, which I want to happen.

Here's a question, Mumsnet. If Labour are so brilliant, as you all claim, why have governments mainly been Conservative over the years?

Are you so right and the nation so wrong? Is that why you (and the Guardian) all hate on the UK at every opportunity? Is it bitterness at you thinking you're so right (and loudly proclaiming it whenever you can) just to get your noses rubbed in it at election time?

RobinStrike · 06/03/2023 10:15

@SleepingRedSnowBootsAndThePea doesn't remove all his other achievements, many of which were way ahead of their time in social justice and treating all people with respect.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/03/2023 10:15

I’m in Scotland and Scottish Labour are a waste of space. Just no.

Their stance on TWAW. Their refusal to standard up for women's rights and to support Rosie Duffield properly. Their anti semitism in the past which I do not believe for a second has been stamped out, and the anti semites will just come crawling out again from under their rocks. Their attack on aspiration and punishment of anyone who has achieved anything financially. Kier Stamer's weakness.

But I am not that fond of the Tories either so it's all a bit of a shit show.

Yes, this for me too. If things stay the same I will spoil my ballot and I'm in a west mids swing seat so Labour need votes like mine.

Lochroy · 06/03/2023 10:16

TWAW.

I was brought up in a Tory supporting family and once I could vote in the late 90s voted Tory because the rhetoric of the day was that the Tories were for people who worked hard to pay their way and Labour was for people who would rather be on strike or teenage mums getting pregnant to jump the council housing queue. Labour in power would allegedly make people like me worse off.

Now I'm older, I have a much better and balanced perspective. The Tories are, as a collective, a disgrace and I don't seem them doing anything for people like my friends and I who work hard, do earn above average, but don't have any spare and certainly couldn't send our kids to private school, for example, as our parents could because of the cost of mortgages. The Tories to me now, are for themselves and their ultra rich mates.

So I'm politically lost but I do like Starmer. I think he talks a lot of sense and is more in touch.

But I can't get past TWAW.

And it's probably irrelevant for me anyway. I like in a strongly Tory area with Lib Dem's the most likely oppo, so I'm not sure what to do.

Grumpybutfunny · 06/03/2023 10:16

ChickenDhansak82 · 06/03/2023 09:36

Their lack of common sense over where money comes from and spending too much for the now and not thinking about future finances of the UK.

I don't trust them to reward those who work really hard for a living. The whole benefits system in this country has long been a joke, and I want to see a government who will support those who work hard.

I dislike the attitude of expecting something for nothing and this needs to be changed. The benefits system was brought in to help those desperately in need and those who received it were grateful for the help. It has now become a lifestyle choice and a way of life which is awful.

This, we need to cut spending but labour would just borrow more. Also the 20% tax on schools so I would end up paying for state schools then even more on top to send DS private if we don't get the faith school we want.

illiterato · 06/03/2023 10:16

I’m also unconvinced on the VAT on private school fees. I feel it’s ideological and the money raised won’t be enough to make a difference to state education. Also anyone who thinks an influx of MC parents into state schools will benefit existing students should listen to “nice white parents”. It’s US based but a cautionary tale nonetheless. I’d prefer a wealth/ asset tax- either windfall or ongoing plus higher CT on second homes etc. I’d have to pay either so not a case of not wanting to pay more. I just think the wealth tax will be better targeted and that property is more of a divider than private education. The school tax will just punish those scraping the fees together vs paying them out of petty cash.

The trans bullshit, they could have my vote when they remember what a woman is, when KS grows a backbone and they get rid of Angela Rayner, can't bear her.

WinterMusings · 06/03/2023 10:16

TWAW
Magic Money Tree
KS
lack of actual policy
complete lack of any funded policies EVER

....

Confused here, most people on this thread have said they would not vote Labour. Is this not also mumsnet?

I personally don't vote Labour because my constituency is a narrow Tory/Lib dem seat, so Lib dem is my only real choice.

Also, out of interest, why do you think the nation is right and mumsnet is wrong?

Freshair87 · 06/03/2023 10:17

I'll vote for them (or anyone else) to keep the tories out, but I loathe kier starmer, too much like a Tory!

edwinbear · 06/03/2023 10:17

The 20% VAT on school fees. We can't afford it and will have to pull DC out of school - DS will most likely be in the middle of his GCSE's.

ChristmasKraken · 06/03/2023 10:17

That they don't know what a woman is.
I've always voted Labour in the past. I won't anymore.

GenuinelyDone · 06/03/2023 10:18
  1. TWAW stance
  2. Local candidate and current MP supposedly stands for the environment but has fully supported the demolition of a huge green space that reeks of corrupt brown envelope deals
  3. They tacitly support the abuse of women, even in their own party who dare to question why someone with intact male genitalia should not be in female prisons or other sex segregated spaces

As someone left of centre, I desperately need to be able to vote for someone who just has common sense. That I'm struggling to find a candidate in one of the parties apart from the Conservatives that doesn't give a shit about women is beyond depressing.

I live in a swing seat so a vote for anyone but Labour is effectively a vote for the Conservatives. That's still not enough to make me vote for them.

ActDottie · 06/03/2023 10:18

I just vote for whoever is most likely to keep the tories out. There’s no strong party atm it’s quite sad.

WoolyMammoth55 · 06/03/2023 10:18

I will vote Labour with great joy in hopes that the 13 years of things that were great about this country - NHS, education, criminal justice system - being comprehensively dismantled by the inept and immoral Tories might finally be ending.

Labour isn't perfect - what is? - but they are a million times better than the Tories. Anyone who thinks otherwise genuinely needs to take a look around.

That they've also utterly crashed the economy should also expose the massive lie that they are "the party of business". Just look at Truss FGS! This is all because of Osborne's austerity policies which are unkindness and stupidity combined...

Nitpick all you want, there's no part of our lives that wouldn't be better under Labour.

BlackeyedSusan · 06/03/2023 10:18

RobinStrike · 06/03/2023 09:27

Same as you the TWAW. Almost always voted Labour apart from when a LibDem would keep the Tories out. But I feel I will have to spoil my ballot.

Yep. Not voting lib dem or greens either as they think it's perfectly reasonable to use a child rapist as an election agent. Hoping for an independent candidate, possibly spoilt ballot and maybe Tory if Ritchie gets his act together. (They are the next largest party here) (Despite them being shit on other things) I am disabled and have disabled children so men in female spaces or offering intimate care because they think they are a woman is something that would disproportionately effect us. Also survivor of DV and CSA. And no I am not going to reframe my trauma. How about tw reframe their desire to be in women's spaces eh? I have a communication disability and struggle to use ordinary language so buggering about with pronouns is impossible. I also see men as men as I don't visually discriminate any outward trappings of clothing as part of my disabilities and could do with not getting shouted at or ostracized for being disabled. (Along with many other things I can't "see" that make life difficult)

Yeah, I held my nose in the last g.e. thinking common sense would inevitably prevail, but no fucking chance this time. They are wedded to their ignorance.

BramleyAppleHotCrossBun · 06/03/2023 09:36

I've come to the conclusion that Keir is deliberately not announcing much policy, because recent history shows the Tories steal it and pretend it was their idea. I'd keep schtum until an election too...

You think politicians should keep their opinions and ideas to themselves in case someone else recognises they are good ideas and implements them? 🤔

Arapawa · 06/03/2023 10:19

Keir Starmer's attitude to women. Actually - apart from very few (eg Rosie Duffield) none of them support women's rights and actively try to destroy them by pretending men can be women.

Flamingogirl08 · 06/03/2023 10:20

Nothing, I will be voting for them again. That's not to say I dont have my criticisms but the absolute shitshow that is the Tory party is much worse in my opinion

sunshinesupermum · 06/03/2023 10:21

This 100%.

risefromyourgrave · 06/03/2023 10:22

The fact that they will fuck over women to benefit men in dresses.
The fact that they treat the working class (who they are meant to represent) with such contempt.
The fact that Keir Starmer has as much personality and conviction as a wet wipe.

Adrelaxzz · 06/03/2023 10:22

RobinStrike · 06/03/2023 10:07

@KatyKlanger the Labour Party after the war was born out of the Communist party because the difference between rich and poor at the time was so great. Under Harold Wilson in the 60s they did a lot of good, equal pay act, decriminalised homosexuality and abortion, built hundreds of thousands of homes, aimed for full employment, introduced the Race Relations Act. But half the party still thought he betrayed them because half the party clung to communist hardline policies. Same happened with Tony Blair. Under Labour schools were rebuilt, hospitals built and massive increase in drs and nurses. Waiting lists went right down. Sure start, support for families and children. But again, the left half of the party (ignoring Iraq) still thought he betrayed them because he didn't go far enough. It's the same now. Starmer is trying to be a moderate Labour leader and half the party will always fight him. But the fact that each time Labour has gained power the country has been in a disastrous state , as after Thatcher and then again now with massive underfunding of services, suggests that despite everything Labour does achieve things. But it doesn't have the huge groundswell of support to stay in power because half the supporters always want more left in policies that they supply and would rather have an unelectable Corbyn

Whereas the country is in a brilliant state now after the Tories did such a great job 😂

PamelaDawes · 06/03/2023 10:24

I am in Wales. I vote Labour in Wales.

But our schools are underfunded, the new curriculum is absurd, and my health board has been in special measures repeatedly over the many years. My kid cab speak Welsh, but school isn't teaching her how to read very well.

Money gets poured culture issues, but the schools and health services are on their knees.

With regard to parliament, I worry about the progressive agenda. And in the last election our candidate was not a safe pair of hands. She was the opposite of a safe pair of hands.
