The stunning skirting boards

Shopping for skirting boards this morning and the bloke in the shop showed us this beading that you put on top of the floor and up to the skirting boards.

He said “have you thought about using these? They look stunning when done against skirting boards”

Stunning. As anyone ever been stunned by someone else’s skirting boards?

YABU - yes, I have on occasion gone into someone’s house and almost fainted at their amazing skirting boards

YANBU - no, it was a stupid thing to say and you’re right to still be annoyed about it hours later

YABU - but not for the reason you gave.

It's an expression, and one that's often used about decor choice, especially by salespeople.

I can't imagine giving it a second thought.

Rainbowshit · 04/03/2023 13:54

Huh? YABU nothing wrong with the word stunning in this context.

MargaretThursday · 04/03/2023 13:54

I'm just going to say: Bet that's a pain to dust.

Stunning. So you’d look at the skirting boards with their new beading and be stunned … impressed maybe at a push but stunned? What’s stunning about skirting boards? With or without beading?

So you would literally use the word stunning to describe someone’s nicely done skirting boards?

I just can’t imagine walking into someone’s house and jumping back in a stunned manner because you happen upon their skirting boards - it makes no sense

A really really posh pair of designer curtains maybe but skirting boards?

I often find skirting boards stunning.

GrogusMama · 04/03/2023 13:58

I'm looking for skirting boards right now. My friend sent me a link to black ones and I sent back 'ohh they're stunning!'

😂 They are!

Surely not?! 😂

Tbf I love my skirting boards. Attention to detail makes all the difference

DoeRayMe · 04/03/2023 13:59

I can't picture what you mean op. Do you have a link to what he means. I can't understand a skirting being stunning

Seriously? 😂 I think I’m living in a parallel universe sometimes!

Ill admit I’m BU then but I’m still a bit fuming about it

@BourbonBon well skirting boards are stunning if you stub your toes on them.

but otherwise no, and that beading looks horrible and makes the room look smaller imo.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 04/03/2023 14:00

It seems a bit extreme for skirting boards. We had some particularly pleasing ones (to my taste) in our last house and I managed to stay conscious every day despite catching regular glimpses of them.

He is a salesman though, so it's sort of his job to big things up disproportionately.

I think beading against skirting boards just looks like you're trying to cover up a shoddy finish. The skirting boards hide the messy bottom of the walls, the bearing covers the messy bottom of the skirting; do you need something to cover the bottom of the beading? Does it end up turning into a sort of wooden fractal with infinite dust-gathering capabilities?

Igniteyourbones · 04/03/2023 14:00

Haha we have quite unusual skirting boards in our house and a friend visiting our house took photos of them to show their friends in the building trade!

Wallabyone · 04/03/2023 14:01

😂
I think you're taking the word stunning too literally-in this context it just means very attractive, surely?! I mean, I can't say I've ever found skirting to be extremely attractive, but maybe this guy has a penchant for skirting 😂

LadyOfTheCanyon · 04/03/2023 14:01

I think you need to let this one go, OP Grin

MerryMarigold · 04/03/2023 14:01

We need pics of both the stunning black skirting and the beaded skirting in order to judge. I think somewhere where there is not much furniture, the skirting could be quite stunning, depending on how it's painted and what else is there. It's an interesting idea to make it a feature as it so rarely is.

If I thought they were stunning why not?

I think means the beading you usually add when you’re having new flooring and your skirtings are already in place. Some skirtings can be stunning but these look a bit naff in my opinion.

Wouldn’t you have to be literally walking into the wall to stub your toe on a skirting board?

He is being unreasonable because those beading things that go over laminate always look shit.

Amispringy · 04/03/2023 14:03

The misuse of stunning is just another example of language dumbing down

Usually, though, it's "stunnin hun"

User18695438 · 04/03/2023 14:03

We have some triangular curved wooden bits at the bottom of our hall skirting board, is that it, I wouldn't say it was stunning, it's just the bit between the skirting and floor

bellac11 · 04/03/2023 14:03

I actually do love a really nice skirting board. I have skirting board envy quite a lot of the time

I would have been 'stunned' at his comment though because the beading that he is talking about is ugly. There should never be beading, the skirting boards should go on top of the floor which is already laid, not the other way round

In our house, because my OH knows nothing, he insisted that we wouldnt remove the skirting boards before laying the floor we employed the beading.

Its ugly. I hate it. I hate beading, it actually enrages me to see it. I can see it now as I look up. So we have ugly skirting anyway, all scuffed and needing re painting.
