To buy DD a present between birthday and Christmas.

DD is desperate for a Rainbow High doll. She’s 6. I think it’s a bit tied up with friendship issues because it’s become a thing on her friendship group and she feels left out when they play with them.

Her birthday isn’t until June.

We usually don’t buy ‘big’ presents outside of birthdays or Christmas.

We can afford it, I just worry about spoiling. What do other people do about toys outside of birthdays or Christmases.

YABU - Buy her the bloody doll.
YANBU - hold out till Christmas

Buy her the doll.

Buy the doll

Haus1234 · 25/02/2023 08:12

Can you manufacture a reason for it? I remember getting a toy I wanted for passing a swimming certificate for example.

Rainallnight · 25/02/2023 08:12

Gah I think I designed the voting the wrong way round. Anyway, just tell me what you think!

Ours always got toys all year round.
Get the doll.

MirabelMax · 25/02/2023 08:13

I'm sure you can invent a reason if you want - good parents evening, well behaved, nice to your sibling etc etc

I agree with this, find a reason

Changethenamey · 25/02/2023 08:14

Can she ‘earn’ the doll? Small chores or something?

Mercedesbenz2022 · 25/02/2023 08:14

Get the doll for her

WhyIsBogdanSexy · 25/02/2023 08:14

Does she have any money of her own? My kids have their piggy bank money from birthdays etc and if they are desperate for something we'd let them use some of that towards it.

KEVINNNN · 25/02/2023 08:15

My 6 year old gets pocket money. £1.50 a week if she wants to buy a toy then she has to save up for it. Could you do this? (I don't know how much a rainbow high doll is)

Artisticpaint · 25/02/2023 08:15

get The doll, no reason needed, I got our kids toys when they were wanted/needed and they’ve grown up just fine.

lanbro · 25/02/2023 08:15

I get mine things as and when, particularly as interests change so quickly. If you can afford it, buy it!

strawberry2017 · 25/02/2023 08:15

It's not spoiling to buy an occasional toy.
Get her the doll

Treeeeeeee · 25/02/2023 08:16

It looks like a £10/20 doll. Unless I am missing something that isn't (like another £100 added to the price) that isn't a 'big' present and should be bought at other times of the year

Rainallnight · 25/02/2023 08:16

For people who buy tous all year round, do you worry about spoiling? Ours will get something small from eg a National Trust shop on a day out, but not on a ‘can I have this thing I want’ basis.

We’re quite comfortably off and I want her to understand things cost money.

If it's affecting friendships id probably just buy it, maybe have a treat day just you and her, take a bus into town if you usually drive, go for lunch and let her choose a doll. Makes it a special day all round that she'll remember.

DESGUSTING · 25/02/2023 08:16

I don't think it's spoiling buying a toy outside of birthdays/Christmas.
I buy my son toys throughout the year for no reason.

Digestive28 · 25/02/2023 08:16

Buy the doll. I love it as an adult when people get me things “just because” even if it’s just a Greggs! So imagine she will be delighted

BessieSurtees · 25/02/2023 08:16

Buy the doll. Amazon prime can deliver today. Have it delivered direct to her as a reward for something.

Moving forward always put any birthday money away for these sort of purchases and she buys them with her own money.

Badgerandfox227 · 25/02/2023 08:16

My kids birthdays and Christmas are within a month, so we get them things all year round. We do factor this in to Xmas purchases though. We’d usually get them something as a result of something good, or Easter, or school report, having an injection, helping with chores etc. it wouldn’t be a big big thing, but up to £30/40 max, more likely about £20.

Everyone does it differently though, but this works for us

Coffeellama · 25/02/2023 08:17

Buy the doll, she can earn it or use some spending money towards it. I think most people who can afford it do allow toys to be bought more than twice a year, it’s just a case of finding reasons for the ‘treat’

Xelda · 25/02/2023 08:18

Buy her the doll, occasional treats for no reason are one of the pleasures parenting imo!

Standbyguest · 25/02/2023 08:18

They're on sale in argos now, 21 quid.

But she won’t understand that ‘things cost money’ if she only ever receives birthday and Christmas gifts. ‘Saving’ for things through the year and having to be selective to get a carefully chosen toy every once in a while teaches more in my opinion.
