To think husband is awfully petty

Can’t believe I’m actually writing this, but my husband got upset because I opened a box of chocolates that his sister gave him for his birthday and ate a few of them. I laughed it out at first, but he insisted it was rude to open his present. I think that’s incredibly petty and actually feel offended to be told off like a child. AIBU?

I mean if they were his, you probably should have asked.

foulksmills · 22/02/2023 18:18

Yabvvu.

They weren't yours.

TheFlis12345 · 22/02/2023 18:19

They were a gift for him, YABVU to open them without asking him.

Ponoka7 · 22/02/2023 18:20

Why did you think that you were entitled to do that?

daisybrown37 · 22/02/2023 18:21

You shouldn’t have helped yourself to his present with out asking him.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 22/02/2023 18:21

It was rude to open his present without asking him. And even ruder to disregard his feelings about it. Is there a backstory? Do you not like your dh or respect his feelings for some reason?

SummerHouse · 22/02/2023 18:21

I would have been slightly annoyed, and said so. DP would have been apologetic. Resolution would be he buys me some more. Ultimately he probably wouldn't. Not a big deal but I don't think he is being petty to expect a bit of humility.

thistimelastweek · 22/02/2023 18:21

I wouldn't open gift chocolates to my husband even if I were the giver.

Not OK.

Slobberchops1 · 22/02/2023 18:22

That’s very rude and greedy

Epicstorm · 22/02/2023 18:22

Id be fuming. Awful thing to do.

teomama · 22/02/2023 18:22

We normally help ourselves to whatever is in the kitchen without asking specifically

OP posts:
KindlyKanga · 22/02/2023 18:22

You're so out of order

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 22/02/2023 18:22

Opening someone else’s present is just rude.

Be that chocolate, wine, perfume or anything else.

Even in busy households where the majority of stuff is shared, like ours, presents should be respected as belonging to the person gifted them.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 22/02/2023 18:23

Is this a reverse?

Normal kitchen stuff isn’t the same as a birthday present

You need to change your ways. Thats so nasty you have no respect for the gift.

Is this a reverse?

Oh it's not is it?

RichardsGear · 22/02/2023 18:24

I agree with your husband.

gelatogina · 22/02/2023 18:24

Yeah sorry OP you are in the wrong here. I’d be annoyed at my partner doing this

GlassBunion · 22/02/2023 18:24

Either this is a reverse or you're really stupid and um-empathetic.
I would be mightily pissed off if my husband opened my present.

Hmmthatsgoodchicken · 22/02/2023 18:24

I'd be fuming.
They were not a present for you.

BooksAndHooks · 22/02/2023 18:24

That’s incredibly rude. I would be very upset if someone opened a gift for me if not yet opened. I will gladly share but to have them opened and started on by someone else is so selfish.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 22/02/2023 18:24

I think that’s terrible - I’d be fucking furious if DH ate my birthday present without asking

But presumably most stuff in the kitchen isn't a gift?

CaraVann · 22/02/2023 18:25

Of course YABU
