DH gave the dog marmite

UnluckyPennsatucky · 20/02/2023 21:40

DH gave the dog a tablespoon of marmite as he was told it helps them settle. Now her belly is making weird noises and she’s crying etc hours later

DH thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it could be the marmite

Google has mixed opinions as to whether dogs can eat marmite

OP posts:

Until I met dh I thought marmite was a dogg food as the only person I knew who bought it was granny, for their dog. He also had (shop bought) marmite covered biscuits.
However I don't think he ever had a spoonful of marmite, although he did luck the spoon often.

Glad doggy is ok. Also best wishes to the cutlery crumpet eater. She may do the same with toast!!!!

I had no idea you could give a dog rennies. Thank you, I have a spaniel who favours food he's not supposed to eat so this is good to know.

Hope your dog's okay this morning op.

I wouldn't take any random advice from this thread! At least double check with a vet before you give a dog human medicine Confused

Update: Dog is fine.

Some of the replies on here have been a bit mental

DH lives to see another day

MN is bonkers when it comes to pets, give your goldfish the side eye and you deserve to be stoned

Yet wouldn’t piss on someone’s MIL if they were on fire. Go figure 🤷🏻‍♀️

Glad DDog is fine!

Sixgeese · 20/02/2023 23:14

While I would never give DDog a tablespoon of marmite, he has been known to steal the plate that I am eating marmite crumpets off and licks any remaining dregs of marmite off it.

I think he likes the taste as while he lets me finish the crumpet as soon as the last bite is on the fork, his head comes up and he grabs and runs off with the plate.

I on the other hand, do occasionally eat marmite by the spoonful, it is yummy!!

Ummm while everyone has picked up on this poster eating crumpets with a knife and fork has everyone missed that the dog runs off with the plate?? How does a dog run off with a plate?!

OP to husband ‘Where the fuck are you going with that Toblerone?’

🤣💀🤣

Sunriseinwonderland · 21/02/2023 07:35

That much st can kill an animal ffs. Get to the vet now.
My cats love marmite but they get a tiny lick off my finger only.

Nimrod12 · 21/02/2023 07:40

@UnluckyPennsatucky So pleased he's OK now. Give him a hug from mine...🥰🐕🐶

If there are any dogs that weigh more than 100kg, I want them caught and shot now.

How about us catching and shooting you? Plenty of dogs that size!

Mothership4two · 21/02/2023 07:42

OP has updated @Sunriseinwonderland and the dogs OK

I agree....my pup (sadly no longer with us), decided that rennies would be good to steal, he ate 1 and had a reaction, massive hives which must have been itching as when I found him he was covered in blood. Daft shit did it on a Sunday too when it was triple at the vets....he was fine, no lasting damage after a dose of portion being prescribed, but he was a 50kg bulldog, so anything smaller may not have been so lucky.

Bloody miss that daft fool!

Twinedpeaks · 20/02/2023 22:20

So you'd want the St Bernard's and Newfoundlands that are working dogs involved in rescue shot. I truly hope no rescue dog wastes its time ever trying to rescue you.

Neither StBs or Newfoundland's are likely to weigh over 100kg. Calm down

Really, there are plenty of these breeds that way over 100kg, mastiffs too! Do your research.

Really? Afraid this is in lb not kg but really struggling to find all the 220lb breeds tbh
https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/nutrition/breed-weight-chart/

There probably are a (very) few 100kg dog's out there but they are outliers, not plenty of them!

ElBandito · 21/02/2023 07:52

What I have learnt this morning

  1. people love dogs
  2. dogs should not eat salty food
  3. a lot of people don't know the difference between pounds and kg
  4. never admit to eating crumpets with a knife and fork

@LadyChatterlysLover

When I think what my childhood dog ate I wonder how he made it to 16. Mince pies were a favourite of his, now people freak at a single raisin, he used to eat grapes off the grape vine in the garden too.

This is because they are toxic to some dogs but you don't know till its too late.

I don't think there are many dogs whose weight should be 100kg/220lb, outliers and overweight ones perhaps.

Mastiffs regularly top 100kgs,as do Great Danes, there are plenty of these dogs around. In fact two dogs over 100kg go to our local groomers. They are certainly not that rare. The largest recorded mastiff weight was 128 kgs I believe.

whyhere · 21/02/2023 08:05

Surely part of owning any animal is to understand their needs and to learn what is dangerous for them? Keep a rat? Don't give them anything with a husk, like sweetcorn. Have a dog? Keep dried fruit and chocolate out of reach. Have a cat that goes outdoors? Make sure there is no possible access to antifreeze in the garage.

Isn't this just being responsible?
