DH gave the dog marmite

DH gave the dog a tablespoon of marmite as he was told it helps them settle. Now her belly is making weird noises and she’s crying etc hours later

DH thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it could be the marmite

Google has mixed opinions as to whether dogs can eat marmite

A tablespoon? I think the salt content in a tablespoon of marmite would kill me let alone a dog. What weight is your dog? I’d contact the vet for their opinion

AdventFridgeOfShame · 20/02/2023 21:45

Give your dog water now and phone the vet if your dogs weighs less than 100kg.

They don't do salt like we do.

motleymop · 20/02/2023 21:46

I'm sorry, I don't know the answer - but what a fucking weird thing to do!
Has the dog drunk any water since, poor thing?

Your husband is an idiot, a tablespoon of marmite has loads of salt, not good.

Find a vet.

If there are any dogs that weigh more than 100kg, I want them caught and shot now.

albapunk · 20/02/2023 21:52

In a 30kg dog it'll likely do little harm but I would still contact your vet for some advice. Marmite in small amounts is fine for dogs.

Just wondering if you mean 100lbs?

definitely need to ring the vet though OP, just for some advice. Hope all is ok with the dog.

Whu · 20/02/2023 21:53

Dogs can get sodium poisoning which in extreme cases can be fatal, more likely to have an upset tummy but I wouldn’t take the risk. Ring a vet to be on the safe side.

Monsterjam · 20/02/2023 21:53

Mine eat marmite regularly… not that much at once of course. Id hydrate him/her as much as possible

Kerfuffler · 20/02/2023 21:56

CheeseDreamsTonight · 20/02/2023 21:50

Just 1g of Marmite contains 0.108g of salt, which is equivalent to a medium dog’s recommended daily allowance. Even the reduced salt variety of spread has 0.49g of salt per serving, or 0.06g of salt per gram.

A table spoon is just under 15g.

Vet. Now.

SeaDee · 20/02/2023 21:56

How on earth could a salty TABLESPOON of marmite settle a dog?

And who told him?

flutterbyebaby · 20/02/2023 21:57

Where did you dh get that idiotic idea from?

ShirleyPhallus · 20/02/2023 22:00

My old dog managed to eat all sorts over the years. Particularly memorable was when our lovely NDN came over and left the gate between us open before a birthday party. Dog went through and ate a load of chocolate cupcakes, some rocky road (chocolate and raisins) and a balloon

We absolutely panicked, called the vets and they just said “keep an eye on her, dig through her poo for the balloon” and she was fine

Hopefully yours will be too! Ours was a lab and total dustbin

Bonjovispjs · 20/02/2023 22:01

Wtf is wrong with your husband? What a complete idiot, please get your dog checked out ASAP, poor thing.

BertieBotts · 20/02/2023 22:02

Google is going to be no use and neither is calculating the salt content Confused surely salt isn't an instant poison anyway, I thought it just wrecks your kidneys if you habitually eat too much?

Just call an actual vet not random people on the internet's opinions. (Including mine BTW I have no idea what effect salt has on dogs).

gamerchick · 20/02/2023 22:02

I'd probably be ringing the vet for advice at the very least OP
