DH gave the dog marmite

DH gave the dog a tablespoon of marmite as he was told it helps them settle. Now her belly is making weird noises and she’s crying etc hours later

DH thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it could be the marmite

Google has mixed opinions as to whether dogs can eat marmite

Call a vet.

See if you can have your idiot DH pts.

Funny, but he should be pts, the idiot.

Not really related to the problem at hand, but MIL’s dog was sleeping longer than unusual and behaving strangely over a period of days. She happened to be watching as an elderly relative who was staying with them was taking her daily medication. She was unknowingly dropping pills on the floor and the dog was grabbing the “treats”. Fortunately the dog was okay!

My father got our family dog pissed as a fart when I was a kid. It was Christmas, family over, everyone having a drink and a laugh. Dad kept putting his glass on the floor. He thought he was just a bit tipsy and not realising how much he was drinking until our rather large German Shepherd staggered out from behind the sofa and threw up on the rug.

Mother was not impressed.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 21/02/2023 04:19

I just hope the dog isn't coeliac as Marmite contains gluten.

EllieM27 · 21/02/2023 04:41

Well OP, the Mumsnet Dog Tribunal have spoken. It’s the patio treatment for your husband I’m afraid. Personally I’d wait to off him until after the diarrhoea your dog is likely to have. Let him take care of that mess before consigning him to the pavers. Grin

@MillicentTrilbyHiggins - it's 38 degrees here today. If I didn't put the crumpets in the fridge they'd be sprouting green fuzz in a couple of days.

Google is going to be no use and neither is calculating the salt content Confused surely salt isn't an instant poison anyway, I thought it just wrecks your kidneys if you habitually eat too much?

Just call an actual vet not random people on the internet's opinions. (Including mine BTW I have no idea what effect salt has on dogs).

One of our neighbour's dogs was fed several BBQ sausages over an afternoon and very nearly died of acute pancreatitis - the fat/salt content was not a good mix for a cocker spaniel . He needed vet care for sure!

Likewise not sure about Marmite but can't believe anyone would give a tablespoon of the stuff - surely it was a teaspoon? [she says hopefully]

Also you can give your dog rennies which might ease the stomach

I had no idea you could give a dog rennies. Thank you, I have a spaniel who favours food he's not supposed to eat so this is good to know.

Hope your dog's okay this morning op.

2 rennies are enough for an 80kg person, so a 15kg dog only needs a quarter or half a rennie.
Also causes constipation apparently.

Please don't Google and try to self diagnose. The first part of your post clearly indicates that your dog has got a poorly tummy even 'before' the marmite!?

When my munchkin gets a poorly tummy, I replace his meals for a couple of days with boiled long grain rice, a chopped up boiler chicken breast and scrambled egg. It settles his tummy in a few hours. When mine gets a tummy upset, the gurgling and squeaks coming from his tum are so loud.

As for Marmite. Gotta love it and Well, it tastes like beef extract so dogs are going to think they've died and gone to doggy heaven. However, give it sparingly as it is really high in sodium (salt) which over period of time can be harmful to your pooch.
Anyways, sending your doggie kind wishes and big but gentle hugs and hope he is on the mend soon. If you continue to be worried don't hesitate to take him to the vets. X

@smidge

I could easily & if it wasn't so cold I'd go and take a photo. plus running low on self control tonight, I'd end up bringing the spoon back to bed 😂🤣

oh @AlmostSpring2023 your missing the biggest trick of all.you get yourself to cosco and get the tubs.you can get a spade in them 😉

might not be the best in this situation. this is about a salt issue over antiacid needing. and those with a problem with blood pressure and salt in their diets shouldnt be taking certain products such as rennie due to their sodium content.

If there are any dogs that weigh more than 100kg, I want them caught and shot now.

Haha

We came back from shopping once to find our German shepherd knew how to open the fridge and had eaten half a kilo of extra mature cheddar and a packet of smoked bacon rashers. Bit more salt than a spoonful of marmite, and the daft creature is currently snoring by my ankles.

A few of you are making me paranoid, doesn't everyone eat crumpets with a knife and fork or have I bring doing it wrong all these years!

Nobody eats crumpets with a knife and fork. Except you, and maybe the late queen! Do you also eat burgers with a knife and fork?

Hmm, I have crumpets in the fridge, I have Vegemite, I think my mid morning snack is all sorted.... defo leaving the knife and fork behind though... (Vegemite is infinitely superior to marmite!) <runs and hides>

Im absolutely with you on this. And I say that as a born and bred Brit (I don’t admit it often incase Britain shuns me….)

DDogs favourite treat is the corner of toast with a bit of butter and Vegemite on….

gogohmm · 21/02/2023 07:08

@LadyChatterlysLover

When I think what my childhood dog ate I wonder how he made it to 16. Mince pies were a favourite of his, now people freak at a single raisin, he used to eat grapes off the grape vine in the garden too.

motleymop · 21/02/2023 07:11

I have to admit, I have eaten a crumpet with a knife and fork recently - but only in the toasted cheese format. This is behaviour learned from my OH - I'd never had the toasted cheese version before I met him, and he gives me a knife and fork with which to eat it.

Cherrysoup · 21/02/2023 07:15

Helps them settle how? Their stomach? Pop some live natural yoghurt on her food or see if you can get some tinned pumpkin (Sainsbury American section/Amazon) next time.

Sorry, am I missing something here? Why would you want to shoot a dog?
Soz, I think I've got my thick head on today and a 100kg lap2 of tdog is my ideal friend... even maybe 2 of them slobbering for attention and treats 😅😁🐕🐶💞
