DH gave the dog marmite

269 replies

UnluckyPennsatucky · 20/02/2023 21:40

DH gave the dog a tablespoon of marmite as he was told it helps them settle. Now her belly is making weird noises and she’s crying etc hours later

DH thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it could be the marmite

Google has mixed opinions as to whether dogs can eat marmite

The funniest thing is that dog will be sat there tomorrow morning begging for marmite on toast off the kids.

@Clymene
It's not the act of giving the dog marmite that's funny it's the enormous overreactions of posters on hereGrinthey're golden.
Bloody 'animal abuser' fgs, he didn't realise clearly. People give their dogs treats all the time without googling first, he won't do it again.

But why would anybody think that a tablespoon of marmite would be a good thing? A human couldn’t eat that much marmite in one go.

If we ever think about giving our dogs a bit of human food, we always look it up first. OP’s husband could have easily killed this dog. I wouldn’t be laughing.

So you'd want the St Bernard's and Newfoundlands that are working dogs involved in rescue shot. I truly hope no rescue dog wastes its time ever trying to rescue you.

Not even those breeds are over 100kg. My dog is around 45kg and he's like a small pony, 100kg dog is like Clifford I think 😂

When my small dog had to be made to vomit after eating chocolate they said he'll probably go straight back to where he found it when he got home as they get a taste for the foods they aren't allowed, even after the trauma of being made to be sick after. Sure enough he did!

Oh my, his legs are like a horse's. How tall is he/she?

Aldisfinest · 20/02/2023 22:58

Just keep an eye and hydrate. The dog will be fine.

BaroldFromEastenders · 20/02/2023 22:58

There’s a couple of you here that need to get a fucking grip seriously. It was a dumb thing to do, dogs eat dumb shit all the time. Calm the fuck down.

@Clymene

FFS he didn't try to kill the dog. He did something incredibly stupid, but he didn't intend to kill the dog.

The dog isn't even dead Confused

This …have never heard of a dog dying from Marmite poisoning!

ImAGoodPerson · 20/02/2023 23:03

I don't think its about poisoning the dog right now, more about the longer term effects of the high amount of salt eaten, guessing in a 30kg dog it'll be fine.

Of course you haven't. Most of us have slight concerns over feeding our mutts marmite crusts. However big the dog.

Sixgeese · 20/02/2023 23:14

While I would never give DDog a tablespoon of marmite, he has been known to steal the plate that I am eating marmite crumpets off and licks any remaining dregs of marmite off it.

I think he likes the taste as while he lets me finish the crumpet as soon as the last bite is on the fork, his head comes up and he grabs and runs off with the plate.

I on the other hand, do occasionally eat marmite by the spoonful, it is yummy!!

SlashBeef · 20/02/2023 23:17

Dog people are absolutely mental 🤣 they'd be less irate if you'd set fire to someone's nan and done a ceremonial dance.

Might be missing the point, but how the hell did he fit a tablespoon into the jar of marmite?

@smidge

I could easily & if it wasn't so cold I'd go and take a photo. plus running low on self control tonight, I'd end up bringing the spoon back to bed 😂🤣

My old dog managed to eat all sorts over the years. Particularly memorable was when our lovely NDN came over and left the gate between us open before a birthday party. Dog went through and ate a load of chocolate cupcakes, some rocky road (chocolate and raisins) and a balloon

We absolutely panicked, called the vets and they just said “keep an eye on her, dig through her poo for the balloon” and she was fine

Hopefully yours will be too! Ours was a lab and total dustbin

I thought I was going mad when I took a chicken out of the oven and put it on the work top to carve and then the phone went. Came back and there was no chicken, just a clean plate. Then I saw the dog looking suspiciously innocent and realised he'd eaten the whole thing, I thought of all those warnings about a chicken bone killing a dog and he'd eaten every bone in the chickens body.

He was absolutely fine. We had a veggie roast that Sunday.

OP I hope your dog copes with marmite as well as mine did with a hot roast chicken.

Fromwetome · 20/02/2023 23:29

Are you sure it was a tablespoon and not a teaspoon? Sorry to question you but a table spoon is so big it doesn't fit in a normal jar unless you have a xl marmite tub 😂

Orders76 · 20/02/2023 23:31

Off topic OP and apologies.
I regularly make a tablespoon of marmite in boiling water as a b12 drink or soup, like Bovril used to be? Is this as awful as people are saying ' a human couldn't eat a spoonful'
