DH gave the dog marmite

UnluckyPennsatucky · 20/02/2023 21:40

DH gave the dog a tablespoon of marmite as he was told it helps them settle. Now her belly is making weird noises and she’s crying etc hours later

DH thinks it’s a coincidence, I think it could be the marmite

Google has mixed opinions as to whether dogs can eat marmite

Yes I would. Its not animal abuse. He obviously didn't know.

CupidCantAimStraight · 20/02/2023 22:25

Christ, that's a vet job, and your husband can pay.

Emmamoo89 · 20/02/2023 22:20

Fair enough he shouldn't of done it but she shouldn't leave him over it.

She should throw the fucker out tonight and file for divorce first thing in the morning. Cut up all his clothes, send an email to his boss, spray ‘abuser’ down the side of his car, turn the kids against him, and give him a kick in the bollocks for good measure.

Such an overreaction.

Jeez there's some insane people on this thread . It's not great but calm the f* down some of you

LilLilLi · 20/02/2023 22:27

Well this thread is crazy.

Hope your dog is ok OP, straight to the vet if you notice any changes.

Clymene · 20/02/2023 22:29

And it's not an accident. An accident is doing something by mistake. Filling a tablespoon with marmite and giving it to a dog is not a mistake.

Here's my first page of google for the 'google was inconclusive' people:

www.purepetfood.com/help/can-dogs-eat-marmite Occasionally in small amounts

thedogchewcompany.co.uk/blogs/natural-dog-treats-and-dog-chews/can-dogs-eat-marmite Not safe

spoiledhounds.com/can-dogs-eat-marmite/ No way

boneappetreat.com/can-dogs-eat-marmite/ Ok in tiny amounts

pickles.co/questions/can-dogs-eat-marmite Don't panic if your dog steals a bit of toast but don't feed it

I could go on. Nowhere does it say that marmite is a good thing to give to dogs. It doesn't help them settle. It's bollocks. And he's possibly poisoned her dog because some bloke in the pub told him something that wasn't true.

FFS Raise your bar.

He tried to settle the dogs stomach.
Should have gone the chicken and rice route, but he knows that now.
Though the OP should just make sure that big bar of Galaxy also isn’t destined for Fido.

Emmamoo89 · 20/02/2023 22:30

The crazies are definitely out tonight.

Oh the hysteria 😂

mn makes me laugh so much, it’s actually insane here.

Smidge001 · 20/02/2023 22:32

Might be missing the point, but how the hell did he fit a tablespoon into the jar of marmite?

Emmamoo89 · 20/02/2023 22:32

Its a one off I'm sure the dog will be fine.

DimplesToadfoot · 20/02/2023 22:33

We had boxers growing up and every day for breakfast they got a bonio smothered in marmite, they all lived to a ripe old age.

As you now have vets advice while you're keeping an eye on her if I were you I'd feed her boiled chicken and rice for 24 hours. Boil the rice in the same water as the chicken so it gets a chicken taste and keep it sloppy to get more moisture into your dog, I also find natural live yoghurts help my dog if she has a gurgly tummy.
Hope she's feeling better soon

AdventFridgeOfShame · 20/02/2023 22:33

We did the experiment. A tablespoon, real life not Delia, is about 50g. That's 5g or so of salt. No a lethal dose but enough to make you dog pretty dam sick.

And yes, I don't think any dogs weigh 100kg. If they did they would be more able to cope with the fecking stupid amount of marmite that Op's dog was fed.

Most of us weigh double (or more) and would not contemplate that level. Plus as humans we are so much better at handling salt.

@UnluckyPennsatucky does your DH have any concept of what he has done?

One of those big bucket jobs from Costco.

Probably a teaspoon in reality.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 20/02/2023 22:36

You can fit a tbsp into a 500g jar no problem

Why is giving a dog enough salt to kill it funny? I don't understand

@Clymene

FFS he didn't try to kill the dog. He did something incredibly stupid, but he didn't intend to kill the dog.

Sux2buthen · 20/02/2023 22:39

@Clymene
It's not the act of giving the dog marmite that's funny it's the enormous overreactions of posters on hereGrinthey're golden.
Bloody 'animal abuser' fgs, he didn't realise clearly. People give their dogs treats all the time without googling first, he won't do it again.

C4tastrophe · 20/02/2023 22:40

Next time try Bovril.

GetItGone · 20/02/2023 22:40

Watch her for for vomiting, diarrhoea , lethargy. If she isn't herself take her in to be seen, try to keep her hydrated.

BlackbeardsToast · 20/02/2023 22:40

Even at the high estimate of 50g of marmite/5G of salt - that is not enough to kill a 30kg dog.

This thread is mad.

Nooyoiknooyoik · 20/02/2023 22:43

Our pup once ate a whole Halloween Barm Brack cake full of raisins.
