I don't have a middle name

Firstly, this is a bit light hearted and I've not lost any sleep over this, nor will I ever but, my parents didn't give me a middle name.

I have elder siblings who both have middle names.

As a child, I did question my mum as to why, but she just brushed it off saying, your name was lovely enough and you didn't need a middle name.

Im now in my 50s and I've never given it much thought until recently - why didn't I get a middle name? Were my parents that fed up with kids they couldn't be bothered to think of one? Did they not think I would feel the odd one out because I don't have one? I can't ask my parents now, they've both passed away.

Maybe middle names in the 60s were not such a big thing then... although all my peers and friends,,, everyone I know seem to have middle names.

So, do you have a middle name, how old are you and AIBU in feeling unloved at not having a middle name?

I was born in the 80s as was DS and we both have one middle name. DB was born in the 90s and he has two. My parents agreed on one middle name for DB but he was given a lot of teddy bears when he was born so they gave him a second middle name Edward as a nod to the bears.

@NotMyCircusNotMyProblem i have 5 kids, they do all have middle names but I’m not going to lie, by the time I had no5 and 6 (twins) I was really running short of names.
i had criteria: they all have welsh names as it was important to me, but their dad and his family are not Welsh so I needed names that were relatively easy to pronounce for them so that ruled out names like Lleucu or Llŷr, so that made it hard and I didn’t want them to have names I wasn’t 100% happy with.
maybe that’s why? They just ran out of names they loved?

Neither of my siblings or I have middle names. Apparently DM didn't see the point as no-one ever used them. Not only that but we all have one syllable names so they can't be, in her words, "messed with".

One of my kids has a middle name and one doesn’t. They seem unnecessary to me.

One of 4, born in the 60s. I have 2 middle names, we all have 2 middle names.

Me and my sister were born late 60's, neither of us were given middle names. My mother said the reason being that everyone hates their middle name, she hated hers.
I have several cousins, all born in the 60's and they have middle names.
I have never liked my name so wish I had been given a middle one.

My parents were born early 60s. Mum doesn’t have a middle name, of all her siblings only her eldest (the first born) brother has a middle (family) name. I was given a middle name and I went to town on my DC and gave them 2 😂

My aunt hated her middle name (Muriel) so didn’t give her kids middle names, and none of my cousins gave their kids middle names either. Their kids, however, all have lots of names, really fancy ones, as though they’re making up for two generations-worth of nomenclative penury.

I have a middle name which I hate so, other than official need, have never told anyone that I have one. DD doesn't have one because it took long enough to think of her first name and, given that there is no legal requirement to have a 2nd name, I saw no reason for her to have one.

Thankyou to everyone for replying. Obviously I am not alone in being the only sibling without a middle name!

I'm not so bothered about it that I'm going to give myself a middle name by deed poll, nor will I lose sleep over why I wasn't given a middle name... I was just pondering the question and now I know I'm not alone, I feel much better 👍
