"Take Back Control of our borders"

verdantverdure · 13/02/2023 14:22

AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

Brexit was a massive crock of shit

Lockheart · 13/02/2023 14:45

We already had control of our borders. The idea we didn't was a fabrication.

RiktheButler · 13/02/2023 14:46

Yawn, another "everyone who votes differently to me is a moron" thread.

Do we really need a new one every single day?

Dotjones · 13/02/2023 14:49

YANBU, but if I'm honest we haven't really had a proper Brexit so far. Yes we've technically escaped the worst of the EU's clutches but we haven't even begun to take advantages of our new freedoms.

I think of it being like in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. Whilst in the relationship everyone seemed to tell us we couldn't make it on our own, they either ignored our partner's (the EU's) flaws or said that even with the harm they were causing we weren't good enough to stand on our own two feet.

Now, we're in that post-relationship limbo where we don't know what to do. We know (deep down) that we're better off alone but part of us still misses the relationship we'd been in for so long.

In time we'll find our feet and get moving, but we need to remember that the decades of being controlled and abused can't be forgotten overnight. It takes time to move on. Right now we're probably in the "sleeping around because casual sex makes us feel special" phase. Some people are still in the denial phase, we all move on at different speeds.

QuizzlyBear · 13/02/2023 14:58

YANBU - Brexit has yet to deliver a single benefit (forecasts by economists are grim) and the huge reduction of European workers are evidenced by the serious lack of staff in the public services and NHS.

I've seen so many people lose their jobs as their companies have moved HQs off-shore, I lost my online retail business as I could no longer cost-effectively ship to Europe or import goods.

But hey, we got our borders back! Borders that we already had every right to control whilst in the EU, (as do many EU member countries) but who needs facts to get in the way of a bit of 'I'm alright Jack' bigotry? The only people to have benefited at all from this shit show is the small tradesperson. They no longer face competition from EU migrants. That's it.

This government are gearing up for another sop to the right-wing extremists by deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda in contravention of international law and basic moral decency. I wish I was surprised.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 13/02/2023 14:58

Yabu for using incredibly loaded yanbu/yabu options and for not enabling voting.

Yabu in general too as anyone who looked beyond the slogans knew this would be the inevitable outcome.

OrrAppleCheeks · 13/02/2023 14:59

Comparing membership of the EU with being in an abusive relationship is deeply offensive. Please think about how this analogy could impact on other people.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 13/02/2023 15:03

Preaching to the converted here , OP. Meanwhile, in the real world, Germany, Spain, France and Portugal are all examining strategies to restrict migration ( including doing deals with African States to take unwanted migrants, yes, just Patel).

What a load of rubbish - the UK hasn’t moved on from the Brexit vote as the majority who voted leave have now realised they were lied to and that there aren’t any benefits in leaving the EU.
Thank goodness I have an EU passport!

No, you're in the DARVA stage.

I think most of the people who voted Leave, know they were lied to and conned by now.

Yyyyyyyyyeah, right. A better analogy would be that we are in the 'middle-aged bloke who divorced his wife of 25 years because he thought the grass would be greener on the other side (even though all his mates advised against it) now finds fit 20-somethings are not exactly falling over themselves to sleep with him, and he is stuck in a basement wanking and eating cold baked beans out of a tin' phase.

A lot of them don't want to admit it though.

What's the deal with the diseased meat, OP? I've just googled it and all I can find are loads of results from 2013-14 (including issues with import checks) which was long pre-Brexit.

qpmz · 13/02/2023 15:49

Go vegetarian.

You may remember Chris Grayling famously said "We aren't going to check the lorries."

And we don't.

So all criminals have to do is load any old horse meat into a filthy transit van and drive it onto a ferry bound for the U.K.

Ditto diseased animals. No vet checks either.

Then you get it served up to you in a takeaway on a Saturday night, whose proprietor is trying to cut costs, and is following the Tories example of going for alternative suppliers.

Your voting options are a bit disingenuous. I knew exactly what "take back control of our borders," uttered by some Brexiteers, meant. I didn't vote for it, for many reasons.

PineappleMel · 13/02/2023 16:15

Cool - You set up a load of false premises then wondered why you are confused about it all

FuckabethFuckor · 13/02/2023 16:16

The concept of 'control' of borders is a bit of a red herring, really. No country in the world — possibly except North Korea — has complete control over its borders. A (somewhat) porous border is necessary, has been since WW2, and is increasingly important in the current tech-first world.

Whether we're in the EU or not, part of the Common Travel Area or not, aligned or allied to whoever, there will always be people who want to come into this country. We should grow up, stop being babies about borders and acknowledge that, and have sensible discussions about ways to make entry to (and egress from) the UK safe, practical and seamless — and without people having to risk their lives resorting to crossing the Channel in fucking blow-up dinghies.

I'd call that complete denial and living in a totally deluded state of optimism

I'd rather not start eating dairy and eggs again thanks. I was simply curious about the situation.

Thanks for the link OP that's terrible.

YABU for starting another goady thread. It’s happened and we can’t reverse it so moan all you like but sometimes you just have to move on.
