"Take Back Control of our borders"

AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

Everyone I know who voted for Brexit voted so that unelected EU commission could not set legislation to the UK. And that the represnetation of UK was minor in there. Only thing they are annoyed is that it is too soft of a Brexit. Haven't really talked to anyone who voted based on slogans. I'm personally a remoaner (although not allowed to vote) but I think the trouble is that the decision makers haven't accepted the result and therefore its not really being handled. I'll go hide now

Pedallleur · 13/02/2023 21:22

There was a secret cross party meeting at weekend chaired by Michael Gove which looked at how to move on. Borders, finance, trade all discussed. Was leaked by The Observer.

YANBU, but if I'm honest we haven't really had a proper Brexit so far. Yes we've technically escaped the worst of the EU's clutches but we haven't even begun to take advantages of our new freedoms.

I think of it being like in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. Whilst in the relationship everyone seemed to tell us we couldn't make it on our own, they either ignored our partner's (the EU's) flaws or said that even with the harm they were causing we weren't good enough to stand on our own two feet.

Now, we're in that post-relationship limbo where we don't know what to do. We know (deep down) that we're better off alone but part of us still misses the relationship we'd been in for so long.

In time we'll find our feet and get moving, but we need to remember that the decades of being controlled and abused can't be forgotten overnight. It takes time to move on. Right now we're probably in the "sleeping around because casual sex makes us feel special" phase. Some people are still in the denial phase, we all move on at different speeds.

It's been SEVEN years. And still no one knows what to do. It would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

Figmentofmyimagination · 13/02/2023 21:31

Why can’t we just keep brexit but join the single market?

That was the lie they voted on. A lie. The UK had a veto, so we could stop any EU legistlation.

Lonelycrab · 13/02/2023 21:33

Yanbu, op.

All sorts of dodgy stuff getting through. We have no meaningful customs control. Wave it all on as we have neither the staff or the infrastructure to inspect anything.

Preaching to the converted here , OP. Meanwhile, in the real world, Germany, Spain, France and Portugal are all examining strategies to restrict migration ( including doing deals with African States to take unwanted migrants, yes, just Patel).

I live in Spain. Spain are welcome migrants

This is the most spectacular load of shit I've read today. Well done.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Got to admit, I cringed at the post but also giggled like a loon at the sheer confidence of the posters narrative!

Valuesarekey · 13/02/2023 21:40

Even Boris admitted afterwards he expects 30 years of shit before we see any benefits. WWWIII and climate chaos will likely get in the way of any possible benefits any way the way things are going. I am not feeling hopeful today…

Valuesarekey · 13/02/2023 21:42

Oh and taking control of our borders is just nonsense. It was never my priority. Migrants bring a lot to any country and I want to offer sanctuary to those who need it.

Kendodd · 13/02/2023 22:08

RiktheButler · 13/02/2023 14:46

Yawn, another "everyone who votes differently to me is a moron" thread.

Do we really need a new one every single day?

And how hilarious and ironic, that right below your post, a massive great moron talks about the EU being an abusive partner.

Kendodd · 13/02/2023 22:15

Anyway, I'm glad immigration is up and I hope the racist brexit voting fuckwits are fuming.

howrudeforme · 13/02/2023 22:20

Think majority of Brexit voters knew they were being lied to but didn’t care.

Anything or anyone could be crossing our borders. We're not checking. It seems crazy to me but Brexit fans don't seem to mind. And I suppose our terrorist problems are mostly home grown and far right these days.

Do you think?

Do you think they just want to be told that Brexit is going swimmingly and not that the reason we can't afford things we used to be able to afford, like an ambulance or an operation when you need one, is because Brexit is costing our country £100 billion a year?

After the vote is no good is it?

Before the vote it was all cheaper energy food and clothes, high wage economy, vote Leave to save the NHS, exact same benefits nobody is talking about leaving the single market.

And now this... *gestures at current state of our country"

You are right OP, it’s been a total shambles.

Is that immigration growing by enormous amounts a genuine figure?? And yet we have no staff in certain sectors? Or are these migrants not able to work?

Mexicola · 14/02/2023 07:17

CosyFanTucci · 13/02/2023 16:29

The Bank of England calculates that Brexit cost every household in the UK £1000 each: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-13/bank-of-england-official-says-brexit-cost-each-household-1-000?utm_source=google&utm_medium=bd&cmpId=google
It would be nice to see Brexit voters put their hand in their pocket and cover that for the rest of us who didn't want to lose many of our rights and international standing. But not holding my breath.

I know you were only being tongue in cheek but that’s like saying who benefitted from any government policy should now give it back. Right to buy Council houses, free boiler schemes, the list could go on.

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 07:19

Figmentofmyimagination · 13/02/2023 21:31

Why can’t we just keep brexit but join the single market?

You may remember that before the vote Brexiteers often said that nobody was threatening our place in the single market and customs Union and that we'd have the exact same benefits as an EU member.

All that "Go Go WTO" nonsense didn't come in until after people had voted.

Of course we're breaking WTO rules currently by not checking incoming lorries but the never quick to act WTO is giving us a few years to get our house in order so as not to kick a fallen country when it's down.

Neither party will go there.

Which makes me question whether Brexit voters are that few or unhappy - even with all these threads and posts for some reason it’s more mn than focus group / MP inbox

BreviloquentBastard · 14/02/2023 07:25

Yeah, shame none of the pig headed leave voters listened when people tried telling them this is exactly what would happen.

I worked the polling booths the day of that particular vote, and it was disgusting. So many people marching in all self-righteous thinking they were voting to "get ridda them immigrants". Absolute shambles.

I've no sympathy for people now crying "this isn't what I voted for!" because yes, it absolutely is.

Yes it's the official government number from the Office of National Statistics in Fareham.

Although as far as illegal immigration goes they're just guessing because we're not checking incoming lorries/vans.

The government's much vaunted point based immigration system favours the rich and the highly qualified.

British people are expected to do the low paid and "low skilled" jobs now. Like the cleaners, bar staff, fruit pickers, care workers etc.

Which is why we have a large group of people "not economically active" (people out of the jobs market) and a lot of job vacancies at the same time.

I do remember a couple of women on the tv vox pops saying that immigrants would be rounded up and sent home on coaches in the morning and wondering what planet she lived on.
