"Take Back Control of our borders"

AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

YANBU. If "taking back control of borders" is your thing, Brexit has not only failed to achieve that- it has actually made matters worse. A recent study has concluded that Johnson's Brexit deal is a significant cause of the small boats crisis.

YABU for starting another goady thread. It’s happened and we can’t reverse it so moan all you like but sometimes you just have to move on.

We have moved on, we've moved on to the fucking mess we're in now with a divided, resentful, increasingly violent population and a wrecked country.

Go Brexit.

What do you mean we can't reverse it?

The 60 million of us who weren't conned into voting for Brexit just have to put up with it now? The UK is no longer a democracy and voting decisions by a minority are final?

No matter how bad they are for our country?

It's "the" cause.

Before Brexit people in small boats could be returned to the EU country they came from. So few bothered.

Since Brexit they can't, so it's worth the risk.

And of course for most countries of origin there's no other way to apply for asylum in the U.K. without being on U.K. soil.

The Bank of England calculates that Brexit cost every household in the UK £1000 each: www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-02-13/bank-of-england-official-says-brexit-cost-each-household-1-000?utm_source=google&utm_medium=bd&cmpId=google
It would be nice to see Brexit voters put their hand in their pocket and cover that for the rest of us who didn't want to lose many of our rights and international standing. But not holding my breath.

verdantverdure · 13/02/2023 16:35

The UK does have strong "divorced loser getting rinsed for drinks (preferential trade deals) by young women (Australia, New Zealand) because that's the only attention he can get, but telling his mates he's still got it" (Global Britain) while other people can't believe how low he's sunk since the divorce" vibes

Ilovemycatalot · 13/02/2023 16:40

So how can we reverse it? Do you really think rishi is going to go cap in hand begging for us to rejoin? We had a vote wrongly or rightly leave voters won and so as in any free society the wishes of the majority get followed through.
were leave voters lied to? Probably but the government lies all the time and gets away with it. Pretty sure the EU is not desperate to have us back either.

TrishM80 · 13/02/2023 16:48

YANBU.

Brexit voters had no concept of what they were voting for, they were brainwashed by the Daily Mail, Sun, Tories, UKIP etc into blaming "Yoorup" and Johnny Foreigner for all the UK's problems.

1931 was the last time there was a general election where it was won by the ‘majority’ of eligible voters.

So yes, voting decisions by the minority tend to be final.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 13/02/2023 16:53

Brexit has nothing to do with not checking meat entering the country

How old are you OP?

Nobody wants to rejoin. Give it a rest

Ilovemycatalot · 13/02/2023 16:56

@thehorsehasnowbolted Going by the daily threads on this topic I would very much disagree.

longwayoff · 13/02/2023 16:58

We 'havent had a proper Brexit so far'. Do tell. Share your wondrous vision of how it will be when the 'proper Brexit" is achieved.

Yes. lots of people agitating and opening same threads every day

We already had control of our borders. The idea we didn't was a fabrication.

This.

I think people who voted for brexit thought it would mean we could keep all the nasty (brown) asylum seekers out and stop them taking £££££ in benefits and being given nice council houses over honest UK citizens.

they didn’t catch on that it wouldn’t affect asylum seekers at all, but would decimate economic migrants and those coming over for jobs.

because of course they didn’t mean the polish nurses and German doctors, or even the Europeans working as cleaners and fruit pickers.

Yawn, another "everyone who votes differently to me is a moron" thread.

Do we really need a new one every single day?

This post is how Brexit happened. Anyone who pointed out the really clear data that Brexit would destroy our economy (& lead to stuff like diseased meat, due to no more EU laws preventing it) were automatically talked down to like insipid arrogant twats.

LaFemmeDamnee · 13/02/2023 17:07

Dotjones · 13/02/2023 14:49

YANBU, but if I'm honest we haven't really had a proper Brexit so far. Yes we've technically escaped the worst of the EU's clutches but we haven't even begun to take advantages of our new freedoms.

I think of it being like in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. Whilst in the relationship everyone seemed to tell us we couldn't make it on our own, they either ignored our partner's (the EU's) flaws or said that even with the harm they were causing we weren't good enough to stand on our own two feet.

Now, we're in that post-relationship limbo where we don't know what to do. We know (deep down) that we're better off alone but part of us still misses the relationship we'd been in for so long.

In time we'll find our feet and get moving, but we need to remember that the decades of being controlled and abused can't be forgotten overnight. It takes time to move on. Right now we're probably in the "sleeping around because casual sex makes us feel special" phase. Some people are still in the denial phase, we all move on at different speeds.

This is the most spectacular load of shit I've read today. Well done.

I disagree, however it is clear from threads like this that anyone who doesn't go on and on about Brexit is a racist and a moron.

Is it really necessary to recycle this hatred so frequently on Mumsnet?

SomePosters · 13/02/2023 17:10

I always knew ‘take back our borders’ meant that the speaker was a racist piece of shit

Brexit served a very small minority and they got exactly what they wanted out of deceiving anyone who could be whipped up into a patriotic froth.

RoseThornside · 13/02/2023 17:10

Migration definitely has increased. I work in a secondary school and where previously all our in-year admissions were either white British or European, they are now mostly newly arrived from India and Sri Lanka, with a significant amount from Zimbabwe, a few from Nigeria and one or two from South Africa. There are also one or two refugees from Ukraine and small-boat refugees from Iraq. It's very interesting, and definitely a significant difference to pre-Brexit. We lost some students because of Brexit - Romanians, Spanish and Polish - they felt the 'tone' of the country had changed and did not feel welcome sadly. I am glad we are still getting a diverse intake but sorry we lost those we did.

Hazelnup · 13/02/2023 17:11

YANBU. Brexit has impoverished Britain and caused huge suffering and anyone who doesn’t see this is living in fantasy land.

You forgot Putin. He was very influential in the Leave vote and delighted that we left.

Brexit was a massive crock of shit

Correct !

The ramifications and fallout are now starting to show

What about this £150 million we gave every day/week to Brussels Boris "The Liar"Johnson was babbling on about , where's that gone to then ?

This gave me a proper laugh. Cheers.

Paslaptis · 13/02/2023 17:54

"Take back control of our borders" in the sense that it was touted - we can't have sovereignty while foreigners have a right to enter the country - was always a lie. Of course, Brexiteers (I mean Johnson-Farage-Gove-Mordaunt-Patel-Leadsom-Sunak-Lady Hooey-et-al, not individual voters) knew that the UK has open borders and reciprocal freedom of movement (to work-study-live) with Ireland and that unlike our arrangement with the EU this could not be ended.

It’s happened and we can’t reverse it so moan all you like but sometimes you just have to move on. The UK has every right to apply to rejoin the EU - you'd just need a party that would put a new referendum in their manifesto and then win an election. Unfortunately, there isn't one with the courage to do so. But (much more reasonably and democratically) it's also possible for the UK to apply to rejoin the EEC and therefore the single market, taking us back to what should have happened in the two years after the Referendum.

As for the abusive relationship blether... given that we're specifically talking about borders here: the UK as far as I know DID remove FOM for ESM passport-holders (besides Ireland) right on schedule at midnight London time on the last day of the extended transition period. Certainly, all of the other EU countries (besides Ireland) did.
