"Take Back Control of our borders"

AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

YANBU, but if I'm honest we haven't really had a proper Brexit so far. Yes we've technically escaped the worst of the EU's clutches but we haven't even begun to take advantages of our new freedoms.

I think of it being like in the aftermath of an abusive relationship. Whilst in the relationship everyone seemed to tell us we couldn't make it on our own, they either ignored our partner's (the EU's) flaws or said that even with the harm they were causing we weren't good enough to stand on our own two feet.

Now, we're in that post-relationship limbo where we don't know what to do. We know (deep down) that we're better off alone but part of us still misses the relationship we'd been in for so long.

In time we'll find our feet and get moving, but we need to remember that the decades of being controlled and abused can't be forgotten overnight. It takes time to move on. Right now we're probably in the "sleeping around because casual sex makes us feel special" phase. Some people are still in the denial phase, we all move on at different speeds.

Your analogy does not work
Nice try tho. Should keep the racists people who voted leave and are realising what a stupid idea it was, some hope. What timescale are you suggesting for this break-up nonsense to reach the utopia you are expecting?

Jimboscott0115 · 14/02/2023 07:32

Meh, the argument never made sense anyway given we're a country who needs immigration to survive - you only have to look at Russian and Japanese demographics to see what 'taking control of our borders' would eventually lead to.

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 07:33

I'm pretty sure we're going there imminently @MarshaBradyo.

We can't just continue on a downward trajectory losing £100 billion a year and the list of things our country "can't afford" every month getting longer and longer.

There was a secret cross party meeting at weekend chaired by Michael Gove which looked at how to move on. Borders, finance, trade all discussed. Was leaked by The Observer.

Yeah. Because we can't go on like this.

Brexit is damaging our country.

Exactly.

But luckily the Indian Trade Deal is coming and that has literally millions of visas for Indian people to come and live work and study here built into it. India won't do the deal without them.

I don’t know op I see a lot on here but I was surprised by the rehashing of Take Back Control line by Labour.

Obviously a bit silly, and hasn’t landed that well but the intention was to get Brexit voters to feel at home with it.

With a big open goal and poll lead - a time when voters are unhappy and an opportunity to change not taken. Instead a preference to appeal to the Brexit voter.

Mostly I’ve heard politicians on all sides don’t want to go there

It feels a disconnect with mn (mostly remain on this thread and others possibly) and what they are hearing. Do people write to their MPs re rejoining?

Feels like it could be quite a mutually beneficial deal to be fair, we plug in the gaps in our skills shortage and increase trade and India gets more trade, plus a regular flow of returnees with even more skills and entrepreneurial ability.

Many of us could see that these were likely outcomes of leaving but were dismissed as "doomsters and gloomsters" or "condescending" by the radicalised brexit faithful. Its done now. No going back.

It's no use being fatalistic about it. We need to get Brexit undone. ASAP.

Yawn

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 07:51

But because of our points based immigration system visas tend to be issued to the rich and the qualified which will not help us with broccoli rotting in fields or our care worker shortage @Jimboscott0115

Yawn

British people have the highest energy prices and worst access to healthcare in Europe.

Some of us care about our country.

Apologies if you find out patriotism dull.

I know you were only being tongue in cheek but that’s like saying who benefitted from any government policy should now give it back. Right to buy Council houses, free boiler schemes, the list could go on.

Right to buy housing vs Brexit done via referendum despite the massive alarm bells of what could go wrong = not even remotely, contextually or conceptually the same thing.

The mental gymnastics here is astounding. Genuinely am beginning wonder how people piece information together.

That is an out right lie!
But anyway you just carry on 🥱

Blessedwithsunshine · 14/02/2023 07:56

I take it you are not from here as you are describing ‘British people’ in the third person. That in itself is very interesting.

Yawn, another "everyone who votes differently to me is a moron" thread.

Do we really need a new one every single day?

I think people voted for Brexit because they thought it would be good for our country, because they thought it would be be better.

But it isn't, is it?

@verdantverdure we could try pay those jobs a fair wage so that we would not have to rely on people willing to be paid peanuts pushing the wages down

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/02/2023 15:36

I think most of the people who voted Leave, know they were lied to and conned by now.

You would hope.

Brexit was going to give us a high wage economy wasn't it?

YANBU.

Brexit voters had no concept of what they were voting for, they were brainwashed by the Daily Mail, Sun, Tories, UKIP etc into blaming "Yoorup" and Johnny Foreigner for all the UK's problems.

So true.

My MIL voted for Brexit, because she didn't like us "being told what to do by Germany after we'd beaten them in the war".

We saw her a few days after the referendum, and I expressed worries for the future of NI and the Good Friday agreement. When we explained about not being able to have a hard border between NI and ROI under the agreement, she "didn't know about that" and felt cheated that this hadn't been explained.

She is livid that they're not spending all the money we're not paying to the EU on the NHS, "like they promised".

She now doesn't understand why we're getting "all these migrants" coming in on small boats, so I explained that, now we're out of the EU, we can no longer return them to other EU countries under the "first safe country" rule. It's another "I didn't know about that" and she feels she was lied to.

She has a solution to the lack of agricultural labour leading to "crops rotting in the fields" though. We just need to make prisoners do the agricultural work that EU workers used to do, apparently.

The most frightening thing about MIL's views is that she's an intelligent, well read woman. She knows more history than almost anyone I've ever met, knows her Shakespeare and romantic poets inside out, would be a Mastermind contender on Dickens, and was gardening organically long before it was a thing. But she completely failed to apply her intelligence and political thinking to the Brexit question.

Ah yes, patriotism, the 'acceptable' replacement for racism
