"Take Back Control of our borders"

AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

Yawn

Why do people say yawn? Why not shout from the rooftops the gains Brexit has brought? I would have thought all the people saying 'move on, it's done' etc would be more jubilant and could muster more than a sarcasm-yawn. The only person who has shown any sign of happy feelings on this thread is the poster who delusionally compared Brexit to an abusive relationship, which reads more like it belongs in a soap opera 😂😂😂

Are you suggesting that anyone on this thread is a racist @follyfoot37

So how can we reverse it? Do you really think rishi is going to go cap in hand begging for us to rejoin? We had a vote wrongly or rightly leave voters won and so as in any free society the wishes of the majority get followed through.
were leave voters lied to? Probably but the government lies all the time and gets away with it. Pretty sure the EU is not desperate to have us back either.

Even if they were prepared to let us rejoin, we'd never get as good a deal as we had before.

I think the best we can hope for would be a Norway type agreement. But that would require the UK to accept free movement, and the xenophobes wouldn't like that.

Op isn’t even from here but seems to want to tell us what is best for our county - graphs and all - lucky us 🙄

Some of us have opinions based on facts and evidence and some of just you know, don't.

British people have the highest energy prices and worst access to healthcare in Europe.

Some of us care about our country.

Apologies if you find out patriotism dull.

There's nothing 'patriotic' about wishing we had remained. 😆

I spent a little while looking at some of the hardcore brexiteer YouTube channels the other day. One particular one is run by an Asian chap, purports to have nearly 1/3m subscribers (his view count doesn’t reflect this so probably paid for bot subscription)

Oh my gosh. A few of the things I heard and read in the comments.

We have infact got a socialist government. Rishi Sunak is a socialist. Boris Johnson was a socialist.

Brexit hasn’t actually happened yet.

We should start a war with Europe. Yes an actual war.

Rishi Sunak should be deported.

Any mp obstructing Brexit or even questioning it should be jailed for treason. (Some even said hanged!!)

That if they didn’t get the Brexit they voted for, everyone should rise up and storm parliament (sound familiar?)

And so it goes. There are hundreds of comments like these, and it’s truly grim to see the level of delusion and hatred that this has all stirred up.

thehorsehasnowbolted · 14/02/2023 08:11

Your graphs look a bit amateurish OP

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 08:11

@LakieLady

Freedom of movement at 2016 levels or indeed any year of our EU membership would produce lower net migration than in any year after the Brexit transition ended.

Very convenient that you just happened to have so much ‘evidence’ in hand for the British people, gee thanks.

Stoking up culture wars is not new or clever. Fortunately most people are now aware of it, and don’t rise to the bait.

WhatdoImean · 14/02/2023 08:15

sigh - when you cannot make the argument, argue the person (ad hominem)

So - have a go at the person ("are you even from the UK?"), have a go at the presentation ("Your graphs look a bit amateurish") but under no circumstances actually discuss the facts presented

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 08:16

I don't wish we had Remained @thehorsehasnowbolted

I'm glad people got to see the ignominious failure of Brexit.

It's all they've got. As previously mentioned, Brexit is a crock of shit.

But people not riding to the bait keeps my post boosted so I'm all for it. Grin

I'll pass that along to the FT's data science department.

The slogan was simply "Take back control" : it wasn't just of borders and it wasn't specific. Voters interpreted the 3 words how they wanted. This thread is false advertising...

There are still ppl supporting Liz Truss style tax cuts & high govt spending. The markets would have rejected the tax cuts even more strongly if they had OBR's forecast for how bad Trussonomics is. Yet some ppl still think Truss & KK's programme was good thing and should have happened.

That's what the Brexit zealots are like. Even if everyone experienced years of disaster from the trade destruction they want, they would refuse to recognise it, keep moving goalposts about how they still haven't had a "proper Brexit" and any economic pain or friction is the fault of their nefarious opponents instead.

MarshaBradyo · 14/02/2023 08:22

Even if 95% of mn threads like this are remainers the voters both parties are keen on keeping are Brexit voters.

Most countries have their far right reality denying loons, but yeah. It's like walking into an alternate reality, and you would hope people like that don't ever get to make important decisions that affect the rest of us.

Why can’t we just keep brexit but join the single market?

We could, Norway and a couple of other countries are in exactly that position. But it would require the UK to sign up to all of it: free movement of goods, money, services and people; and it's that last one that would be a sticking point for a lot of Brexit voters.

That was the big problem with the referendum: no-one who voted leave knew what they were voting for, because the terms weren't decided. If David Cameron hadn't been an idiot, he would have made the referendum a two-stage process: the first would be a vote on the principle of leaving, then a second referendum on the terms.

There never would have been a majority for the hard Brexit we're now lumbered with, or for a Norway type deal, as that wouldn't have satisfied the hardliners. We'd still be in.

This is why Cameron is, for me, the worst PM of my 67-year lifetime. He put party above country, and that is unforgivable.

verdantverdure · 14/02/2023 08:31

You know Google @Blessedwithsunshine?

Well, that.

You said something was a lie and I used google to find a graph from the FT to demonstrate that it's not.

@LakieLady

Freedom of movement at 2016 levels or indeed any year of our EU membership would produce lower net migration than in any year after the Brexit transition ended.

Not least because post-Brexit, the Dublin Regulation has no longer applied to those refugees reaching the UK via other safe countries. To which they would otherwise be returned, as a rule. A spectacular own goal for the Brexiteers.

I agree with most of what you say but Vote Leave did spell out what they wanted to take control of

We had more control if anything, and could have had more still if we had chosen to.
