AIBU to think the Brexiteer rallying cry of "Take Back Control of our borders" did not lead me to expect net migration at record levels, asylum seekers in small boats at record levels, and suspect diseased meat in Britain due to a lack of border checks seven years after the vote.

You?

YANBU This was not what I understood by the phrase "take back control of our borders"

YABU I know what I voted for, and it was exactly this. Diseased meat YUM!

People used to say that Gibraltar would never join Schengen. But look at it. It effectively is in Schengen right now. Spain control Gibraltar's borders and Gibraltar has an open border with Spain. The UK government just haven't admitted that's Schengen.

People used to say we wouldn't be able to rejoin the EU for 40 years.

Then they said we wouldn't be able to rejoin for 20 years.

But it's on the table now. Already. After only 6.5 years because everyone can see that Brexit is bad for Britain and most people don't want that.

We’re going to rejoin the Single Market. We’re going to rejoin the Customs Union. We’re going to rejoin the EMA. We’re going to rejoin the Horizon 2020/FP9 science programmers. We’re going to rejoin the Copernicus & Galileo space programmes, We’re going to rejoin Erasmus+, We’re going to rejoin Euratom, rejoin the REACH framework, rejoin Open Skies, rejoin Europol, rejoin EASA, rejoin EGNOS, rejoin Natura 2000. Probably financial passporting and the EHIC healthcare system too.

Then we'll want a say in all the rules we're taking and rejoining will be complete.

It's happening. Watch.

It looks like we're rejoining Horizon...✔️

This...

Anyone who still believes in brexit being a good idea...

???

Brexit was always going to be one of the most damaging harms inflicted on the UK since WWII. A harm that was self inflicted for political reasons and to make things easier for a small group of billionaires to be outside EU control and with their influence, deregulate the market (jobs, energy, investment, agriculture, housing) to make the UK a copy cat of USA.

The EU lost enormously as well. In a world with heavyweights like US, Russia, China and India, the loss of the UK has made Europe (not the EU) weaker. Europe and I include the UK in Europe because it's where geographically and strategically belongs to doesn't have the defence force able to compete with the US, Russia or China. Europe's strength is in being the biggest trading block in the world, the source of our economic power and living standards. A trading block US, China and Russia keeps trying to derail because it's against their interests. The US has a massive debt they can't pay and are trying to "distribute it" around in the world. The problem is that China, Russia and India have stopped buying in American dollars and are just storing wealth in gold in their own countries.

World politics and interests are moving so fast and so unpredictable at the moment, that the loss of a country like the UK in the EU, impacts negatively on Europe as a whole.

There were never going to be winners in Brexit for normal average people. That was a lie that was sold for political interests. How long before the UK goes back to the EU is a question no one can answer. Politicians have short memories when expediency and interests are concerned but the UK will never have the same exceptionalities in the EU as it did before Brexit. And this could be a problem for a government in Britain considering how divided they are.

I think it's a bit unfair to compare Brexit damage to that caused by WWII. British people didn't vote for WWII.

I hope people learn how they were lied to and manipulated into voting against their best interests.

Mentalpiece · 19/03/2023 06:19

What I'm seeing from the ' take back out borders ' Is a lot of eastern Europeans who lived and worked here quite legitimately, have now left and instead we're stuck with boatloads of asylum seekers.

lljkk · 19/03/2023 07:03

I just tried to get stats on 'where' the immigrants in UK came from, in 2022.

I can't find hard numbers, but think might go about like this...

400k : Ukrainians
200k : Uni students (not necessarily permanent stayers)
200k : skilled workers, DH's company imported one from Turkey
150k : British nationals & residence permit holders & their dependents, returning from abroad
100k : misc others
45k : people arriving by irregular routes who apply for asylum

verdantverdure · 25/03/2023 12:07

There are some stats in this article @lljkk

Immigration is at record levels.

Nobody really knows the true extent of it.

European immigration is down except for Eastern Europe.

Most new immigrants to the U.K. these days are from India, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Romania and the Philippines.

To be fair, the 50,000 asylum seekers who came over in little boats are only a fraction of the 1.1 million immigration total.

Most rich countries take far more asylum seekers than we do.

And once processed, they work.

It's not their fault the government take years to process their applications is it?

What was so very frustrating about the Brexit campaign was that everyone knew even back then that Boris Johnson routinely lies. He’d been fired for dishonesty twice before that and made many statements that only an idiot would believe. Even Gove told people not to trust Johnson.

It was obvious even before the referendum that when Johnson was saying “we’ll take back control of our borders” he meant “Fuck the borders just give me the top job” and when he was saying “We give the EU £350m a week let’s fund our NHS instead” he meant “Fuck the NHS gimme the top job.”

Unfortunately having elected a known liar who only cared about his job title, we got someone who didn’t care at all about running the country, went on holiday an awful lot, and threw a lot of parties. People are surprised by this? Why?! If people wanted the country run competently they shouldn’t have voted for a clown.

SerendipityJane · 05/04/2023 17:39

If people wanted the country run competently they shouldn’t have voted for a clown.

So the only conclusion is people don't want the country run competently. Which is borne out by the number of posters here who are quite happy to say "I don't care what the facts are ..." as they launch into their shibboleths.

verdantverdure · 05/04/2023 17:40

I think some people would rather have lies they like hearing than actual reality.

Telling people what they want to hear only works for so long though.

Sooner or later most people wise up.

Since the Tories "took back control" of our immigration it has doubled.

The "" are because they always had control of our immigration.

Hurrah - from next year, if you are under 35 you can go to Australia for three years under our fab new trade deal. So worth it to have swapped the ability for all of us, of any age, to travel freely in 28 different countries for as long as we want, for this new right. And we will be growing the economy - eventually - by a staggering 0.08% by 2035.

Not so marvellous for the farmers.

I came to the uk when I was five and DH came when he was 21. We left last year, the main reason being the Brexit vote. Am so thankful to have a passport which enabled me to easily leave. DT’s have graduate jobs - DS in Amsterdam and DD works for the EU in Brussels.

DH is a GP - the practice has now closed as the other GP’s were locums from EU countries and have also now left the UK. There are no GP’s in the uk to replace them

The UK is on a downward spiral

Because you left? I think we'll manage just fine without you

Because you left? I think we'll manage just fine without you

Because the UK has lost another GP and other GP’s, nurses and doctors are also leaving to work in different countries or returning to their own country.

But we are not managing just fine.Hmm We are suffering Brain Drain and it is negatively effecting most sectors. Particularly Health and Social Care and food production.

You know, important things!Hmm

MTIH · 31/05/2023 21:33

And having to bring in professionals from elsewhere...we have 30 new social workers from South Africa...and the government is about to employ teachers from India, Africa and others...a local nursing home with 40 new Indian health care workers - and there was silly me thinking that Brexit was about sending home ‘Europeans’ which would mean wage rises for us all....😉
