I feel like she collaborates with people who are "in vouge" and I don't get her music.

I saw her on her last tour and was disappointed… it was good but a bit m’eh

Agree I also went and found it so self indulgent

so funny!

I love Beyoncé but I do think the hype has become hysterical

TalkinBaaaaht · 11/02/2023 09:22

She puts on terrific shows. She’s an artist with phenomenal energy and control, and real longevity, and I admire that. She also has huge cultural significance. She’s pretty much reached icon level.

Having said that, I’m not into her music. I’m old and I preferred Destiny’s Child Grin. I loved them. Even then, Kelly was my favourite.

Hoolihan · 11/02/2023 09:23

I just love pop music, I think Bey, Adele, Gaga, Taylor, Ed Sheeran, Rihanna are all brilliant and bring some much needed gloss/sparkle/joy to the world. I don't think there's anything to 'get'? It's just music, if you don't like it then fair dos.

Brainfogmcfogface · 11/02/2023 09:30

UABVU what’s not to get?!?!
she is a goddess and anyone who thinks otherwise is just wrong!
Have you watched her perform? The woman is mesmerising! And the fact a black woman is at the top of the music industry is glorious! Queen Bey forever.
I can’t afford tickets and I hate that I’ll probably never see her live but that doesn’t take away my admiration and love for what she does. Full member of the hive right here (in case you were unsure ha!)

phoenixrosehere · 11/02/2023 09:31

I don’t understand your question. What do you mean you don’t get her? Why do you need to? What is there to get?

She is simply a musician with a massive fan base that has been around for decades like the ones before her. I can understand if her music is not for some even though I find it highly doubtful that one can not relate to one song she has sung ever or has not dance to it either one by her or through a collaboration over decades. I’m not a part of the Beyhive and I do listen to her music at times which has span more than one genre but I do find it strange how picked apart she is and how often she gets the blame for her fan base as if she has any control of it or has a say what others do nor have I ever seen her claim to be a spokesperson for anything.

She’s not complaining about not winning nor has she ever seemed to complain about anything involving winning from what I’ve seen over the years yet because some people have, it’s her doing, she’s a diva, or she is ungrateful.

I also doubt she is the only one ever to collaborate or perform with “in vogue” musicians and/or well-known musicians. And why is it a bad thing?

If musicians that have been around longer than her collaborate with her, are they not doing the same thing?

I like Beyoncé. Some of her music I enjoy, others I didn’t and some I find I didn’t enjoy them until months or years later because I hadn’t given them a listen when an album dropped or was into that genre of music at the time. I respect what she has accomplished and the hard work she has done to get where she is and remain there even more so when she has put her career on the line to speak out about controversial issues. She’s been performing since the 1990 and it kind of cool she has been one of those constants in music for me as I’ve grown up.

purpledalmation · 11/02/2023 09:33

She's way too over produced. So formulaic

foghead · 11/02/2023 09:35

I don't like her never have done and I don't know why. I think her sister Solange is so much cooler & has better music.
Can we remember when Solange punched JayZ in the lift!

What I remember from that footage was how cool Beyoncé was. She didn't react or get involved physically at all. It was very impressive.

Agree.

I notice post like these usually tend to be a way to moan about something an OP has seen in the news about a celebrity and looking for a way to gossip about it without wanting to say they were paying attention or want to talk about it. Beyoncé rarely ever comes up in MN AIBU as does many other musicians and celebrities as a main topic unless something is on social media about it.

NeverTalksToStrangers2 · 11/02/2023 09:52

Those slagging TS don't get it at all. Yes she co-writes SOME of her songs, but that's mostly the production element rather than the lyrics, which are absolutely the best thing about her. Her songs are poetry. And every single one of them (even the rare awful ones) have her stamp on the lyrics. She also tends to leave her best songs on her album. She tends to co-write to get a different sound or inspiration. She wrote an absolutely stunning song called Clean with Imogen Heap and Imogen blogged about it afterwards - those non-believers should read it. Why are people so sceptical that she writes her own songs?? Is it because she's female, blonde and beautiful?

I am with the OP, I don't get Beyonce at all. She preaches black female power whilst staying with a cheating husband and lightening her skin. Her fashion sense is terrible. I'm not a fan of warbling either.

Greenfairydust · 11/02/2023 10:00

I quite like what she represents: a strong, smart, beautiful, successful woman in control other life.

Her music and acting I think is really average and quite forgettable although I think she has great energy as a performer/dancer.

So for me she is not someone I am into but I respect what she has achieved.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 11/02/2023 10:03

I love Beyonce. I love her music. She can do no wrong for me. What I would say is that she needs to keep performing to live that lifestyle which is why you can buy her to perform for your daughters birthday if you pay her millions.
She does write some of her own stuff and she does collaborate but she is no plagiarist like Gaga or Sheerin and her music is not whiney and makes you head for the off button as with Adele whom I cannot stand the sound or sight of

Phos · 11/02/2023 10:05

Not my cup of tea either but I guess I'm just not in her target market.

TalkinBaaaaht · 11/02/2023 10:06

I’m not a ‘Beyhive’ groupie by any stretch of the imagination, but you’ve missed the point with Beyoncé. She doesn’t preach black female power. She IS black female power.

Whether you like her or not, she is a global superstar with considerable influence and she is a black woman.
She doesn’t have to be perfect or morally pure or do what you think she should do with her relationships or wear her hair how randoms think she should. She’s powerful in her own right. She can do what the hell she likes. I think that really pisses some people off.

And musical taste is obviously subjective. I don’t dislike TS’s music because she’s blonde and beautiful, I dislike her music because I think it’s bland as shit.

BabyOnBoard90 · 11/02/2023 10:07

I don't like Taylor Swift, but I don't see the need to make a thread about it

reddwarfgeek · 11/02/2023 10:12

A few great songs, but seems like a nightmare to deal with. Too much of a diva personality.

Because you can sing and dance and are beautiful, it doesn't give you a reason to think you are better than everyone else.

She preaches black female power whilst staying with a cheating husband and lightening her skin.

Those two are not synonymous whatsoever. What proof is there that she bleaches her skin? Like many Black people, their skin tone changes through the seasons especially those of lighter skin tone. Let’s also not forget that magazines do and have lighten the skin tones of minority women even more so depending on what country it is where lighter skin is seen as more appealing or prettier.

Her choosing to stay with her husband despite him cheating on her has nothing to do with Black female power as white woman or any other race of women staying with their husbands has nothing to do with their female power and it is bizarre that some use that as one of the reasons to not like her and use it as a stick to beat her with under the guise of not showing enough female empowerment.

Her choosing to forgive and work through her marriage with her husband has nothing to do with her as a musician.

Mapletreelane · 11/02/2023 10:16

She looked effing amazing in that silver cowboy outfit promotion shot!

But she still took a couple of mill to perform in a place with a shocking human rights record where homosexuality is illegal. Disappointing use of her global superstar influence.

YANBU.

Sells herself as some great groundbreaking artiste with Lemonade/Renaissance but it takes 20 people to write one song on her album.

Her voice has power but no emotion or nuance for me.

Got with (and stayed with after he cheated to the extent that her own sister battered him in a lift) a conventionally unattractive but hugely powerful man just because he could make her more famous.

Exploits her kids by putting them in her records/videos/on stage/in stupid outfits.

Her dress sense is abysmal. Tries far too hard on the red carpet and never looks like she has that style/confidence that comes from within. It's all been placed upon her. And is usually a size too small.

She just seems like a manufactured product of the industry rather than a true *pop diva.

*Whitney, Mariah, Celine, Aretha, Gaga, Cher.

Other pop divas are available.

Seriously?
Your post comes across as bitter to be honest

HRTQueen · 11/02/2023 10:27

She is talented and incredibly hard working

I like some of her music not all. She is matured form girls rule the world pop to more mature socially aware lyrics to many she is empowering

unlike Gaga who just jumps on any bandwagon and makes it about herself (even Bowies death became about her loss 🙄) Beyoncé seems to have reflected on her life and particularly lives of black women and for many she is a voice that is celebrating and acknowledging the injustices

she isn’t going to appeal to everyone why should she have to

HRTQueen · 11/02/2023 10:27

And she is beautiful too

just wish she would kick the cheating husband to the curb

FrippEnos · 11/02/2023 10:48

Beyonce should be held up as a great (almost perfect) example of a strong business woman, with great PR.
She knows exactly what she wants and how to promote it to get the most air time and profit.

I don't like most of her music but that doesn't mean that I can't she how much of a fantastic example she sets.

Karwomannghia · 11/02/2023 10:59

And who thinks it’s appropriate to talk about the colour of her skin and what she chooses to do with her relationship? You know better do you- than how she chooses to live her life? Oh the irony.

seratoninmoonbeams · 11/02/2023 11:08

If I'm listening to the radio and one of her songs come on I switch to a different station. Cannot stand her music, her voice.....Awful. If I have to listen to her music it almost makes me get a headache 🤣🤣😮😮

What is “impressive” about allowing your younger sister to attack your husband and not even attempting to intervene for both their sakes?

Not a fan tbh but “Irreplaceable” is one of my favourite ever songs.
