Aibu - Beyonce- does anyone else not get her?

I feel like she collaborates with people who are "in vouge" and I don't get her music.

Someone who mimes their national anthem as Beyonce has acknowledged was the case at the inauguration of President Obama loses any respect as a performer and musician in my eyes.

I think she's had some good songs but don't get the hero worship and goddess stuff. She's talented, but no better than thousands of others. She's great at marketing and seizing an opportunity.

But as with any musician, sometimes someone's work just resonates with you. Hers doesn't with me. But it must do for many many other people.

Maybe the music’s not for you, and that’s ok. I’m definitely not going to shell out £200+ to go to one of these shows. But saying she’s “overrated” is laughable.

She is an empowering figure for many, particularly young black women and girls, and a vocal and significant advocate of gender and racial equality. She proudly platforms black music and black culture. She is a phenomenal businesswoman. She established a foundation for survivors of Hurricane Katrina, donated over $6m to mental health charities over the pandemic, and set up a charity that supports further education for disadvantaged kids in the US and abroad and paid for coronavirus testing for families that couldn’t afford it. Like it or not, she and her music have successfully evolved with every musical trend and phase since the mid-90s and she has total and complete creative control over everything she produces, which in the music industry is basically unheard of.

Divisive? Apparently. Not your cup of tea? Fine. Overrated? Not a chance.

This! Beyonce is by no means overrated. I don't rate lots of music artists. I have no need to state that I do not get them though, or wonder why other people do.

I love her, she's an icon. Going to see her in July, my ticket was £109 which I don't think is too bad? Renaissance is such a blast, can't wait to see the songs brought to life. I think it's going to be a huge party!

She's okay but I do agree overrated is probably the right word for her. She has a talent but seems to think she's some spokeswomen for a generation which is cringey (and arrogant).

Music-wise her albums have a lot of filler tracks. She usually has a couple of standout songs then the rest is background noise imo.

Is there anything to ‘get’? She’s a pop star who sings songs. She has a couple of songs I can remember and she’s got a lot of stage presence but she’s not a musical genius or anything.

I don't get the hype at all. I like that "you won't break my soul" track but it's a dance track so could've had any other artists singing on it and I'd like it the same....

Alot of her other songs are just awful (hold up, she don't love you like I love you is just terrible, he voice makes me cringe in it).

I don’t like her music, and i also don’t understand why there’s this general opinion of her as this lovely woman considering some of the news stories about her behaviour through the years.

I remember I read in the news a few years ago when that she was trying to bully through the courts a older woman who had a wedding dress shop called ‘Blue Ivy’ (Beyoncé’s at the time newborn baby daughters name). The dress shop has been open for literally decades before Beyoncé was even known, but Beyoncé wanted to bully this business into changing their name so that she could TM it. The shop was in this tiny town in the US and a really small business, no threat the her whatsoever. I couldn’t imagine the audacity of suing someone so that you could steal their business name. It’s not like she’s short on cash. I thought, what a horrible bully.

The second thing I heard about her that made me think she was awful, was written by a mother who had given birth at the same hospital as her. Apparently she’d been so paranoid about media that she had demanded (and been granted) for literally everyone except the women giving birth to be removed from the hospital floor that she was on. So all husbands and family had to leave and the women had to give birth alone.

Of course these might not be true but were both in the media at the time, so I don’t understand how she kept her image as this amazing woman. Other celebs have been cancelled for less!

I’m surprised for a a rich and famous celebrity that she wasn’t giving birth in an exclusively private hospital. @Roseyposeypudding What happen with the Blue Ivy TM case?

One person I don't get at all is Taylor Swift,why is she so hyped up all the time?,am I missing something here?.
To me her music is the same as many other artists but she seems to be winning loads of awards and I just don't get why?
Genuinely not trying to sound bitchy,just wondering what others see that I don't 🤣.

I don’t get it either - I think she had the sweet country pop girl thing early on and a few hit, mostly that cover of that love story song and from that point she’s basically been too big to fail as none of her other music is memorable at all.

I also think she probably had savvy management/self management and pivoted from the sweet country girl to the “empowered” girl boss image in the light of metoo and what’s currently hot in Hollywood and her film clips and interviews in that style are more important to her popularity than the music by far.

I can't stand her, I switch the radio off if she comes on. Drunk In Love makes me want to rip my ears off.
I can see her appeal but not the fact that she's on some sort of Queen and we should be happy to have her shine her light upon us.
She's average at best.
I'm really annoyed Magic Soul has started to play her older songs 😆

I do get what you mean OP and the genre of music she makes is typically the stuff I would like but I think Beyoncé has such an amazing voice but that's really it. She is also beautiful but so are many. On the other hand she;

  • is a rubbish dancer IMO (looks like she's having a fit)
  • dresses badly
  • comes across try hard
  • preaches about independence then stays with a cheater

I could go on but those are the first things that spring to mind
