I feel like she collaborates with people who are "in vouge" and I don't get her music.

OP posts:
mackthepony · 11/02/2023 01:19

Yeah don't get it.

I actually think Rhianna is more original

louderthan · 11/02/2023 01:22

I agree. Give me Gaga or Lizzo any day.

MuseThrower · 11/02/2023 02:51

Lemonade is one of my favourite albums. I don’t have a single other Beyoncé track, but that albums knocks my socks off.

Full of raw emotion and power. Great stuff.

Muddays · 11/02/2023 03:25

She is an amazing woman; beautiful, talented and a brilliant dancer, however, her desperate need to over light this is ruining her. She has the excruciatingly embarrassing habit of putting beautiful doctored pictures/videos of herself in the background of anything she does. It screams insecure and hubris at the same time, which sucks the light out of her once genuine talent. I don't know why she does this? Talent doesn't need a wall of mirrors to echo it.

aonbharr · 11/02/2023 03:41

I dislike her voice, the tone is brittle and wailing and quite unpleasant. She doesn't write her own music, she is a singer who buys songs and sings them, there is no genuine artistry. Many better singers could do this, but money makes money and she outbids and has the backing of the production value husband.

AngeloMysterioso · 11/02/2023 04:27

I used to like her, but she just seems so far up her own arse now… like she genuinely believes she is some sort of living goddess or royalty scattering largesse amongst the mortals with her bang average music and insanely expensive concert tickets. You’re not doing us a huge favour love, your fans pay you to be a song and dance woman. It took 8 people to write Break My Soul and it’s absolute shite.

Morestrangethings · 11/02/2023 04:36

I loved her Homecoming (concert film). On Netflix still, I think. She was so powerful and is such an entertainer, and everyone (Solange was there) in it was fantastic.

I think she’s a great performer.

Roseyposeypudding · 11/02/2023 05:02

I don’t like her music, and i also don’t understand why there’s this general opinion of her as this lovely woman considering some of the news stories about her behaviour through the years.

I remember I read in the news a few years ago when that she was trying to bully through the courts a older woman who had a wedding dress shop called ‘Blue Ivy’ (Beyoncé’s at the time newborn baby daughters name). The dress shop has been open for literally decades before Beyoncé was even known, but Beyoncé wanted to bully this business into changing their name so that she could TM it. The shop was in this tiny town in the US and a really small business, no threat the her whatsoever. I couldn’t imagine the audacity of suing someone so that you could steal their business name. It’s not like she’s short on cash. I thought, what a horrible bully.

The second thing I heard about her that made me think she was awful, was written by a mother who had given birth at the same hospital as her. Apparently she’d been so paranoid about media that she had demanded (and been granted) for literally everyone except the women giving birth to be removed from the hospital floor that she was on. So all husbands and family had to leave and the women had to give birth alone.

Of course these might not be true but were both in the media at the time, so I don’t understand how she kept her image as this amazing woman. Other celebs have been cancelled for less!

NashvilleQueen · 11/02/2023 05:54

I quite like her and some of her music but I wouldn't say I listen to a lot. I was interested however in how she deftly managed to dodge too much criticism about the recent concert in Dubai whilst praising her LGBTQ support base. A l bit of online commentary but not much given the potential hypocrisy.

tabulahrasa · 11/02/2023 05:58

Don’t know what there is to get or not, you either like people’s music or you don’t.

She’s a decent singer who’s managed to stay relevant for more than 20 years coming from as far as I know an unconnected to anyone family in an industry that’s hard on women and especially black women, she’s got some decent songs and lemonade was a very interesting album, I can understand why people thought it should have won the Grammy.

But she very famously doesn’t write songs, but insists on getting credit for adding tiny changes to songs other people have written and I’m clearly not her target audience for her last album because I thought it was fairly bland House music.

But things are either to your taste or not 🤷‍♀️

ElizaGumpyLeg · 11/02/2023 06:09

She’s been extremely ordinary since the mid 2000’s. She was alright in destines child and when she had some memorable hits for a short time afterward but these days it’s just all hype.
Which I suppose is really just because she isn’t getting as good songs written for her anymore.

@tabulahrasa

I think a lot of famous performers who “write” their own songs don’t really write them in the way we think.

After seeing the Taylor Swift documentary where she has to have someone follow her round to “orginize” her thoughts into lyrics and seeing that her co-writers are mostly famous hit makers I don’t really believe she writes her songs either - at least not in the sense most people think of when the think of writing a song.

Don’t tell that to Taylor’s fans though lol!! 😝They will pretty much fling their poo at you.

Also whenever you point out that people like Beyoncé or Swift have all these famous hitmakers as co-writers people will accuse you of being a self hating sexist. It’s like no, I can just see the obvious.
For whatever reason the guys seem to be better songwriters in the main. I do think Gaga wrote most of her early songs herself though but I’m afraid to look to closely into it.

InBerlin · 11/02/2023 06:20

Agree. Beyonce and Ed Sheeran.

Chocolatetoastforbreakfast · 11/02/2023 06:23

I remember reading about the hospital where she gave birth too. The husband of the woman who also gave birth there was prevented from getting in to see his wife by Beyoncé’s minders.

She is massively overrrated. Average looking, average talent but obviously massive ambition and drive which has put her where she is. A bit like Adele, also completely overrated.

Shouldbesleeping8 · 11/02/2023 06:25

I don't get this post. I think she's amazing. A proper entertainer and her voice is incredible. She puts out hit after hit after hit.

JackieDaws · 11/02/2023 06:27

Oh no I'm sure Beyonce is heartbroken. Maybe even shaking and crying proper sobs and floods of tears.

ElmTree22 · 11/02/2023 06:31

Can't stand the woman!

Everybody that’s worked with Taylor Swift says she writes her own songs... she’s the only credit on most of them and she’s written songs for other people... so I’m pretty sure she does properly write too tbh.

It’s a running joke that her songs are sometimes a bit surreal because when she’s alone she uses voice notes to record ideas - so the joke is that she has a random dream, records a voice note and then makes a song round it, even if it’s a bit odd.

She also just doesn’t have the voice that Beyoncé has, she’d not get away with just singing 🤷‍♀️

Cirque1 · 11/02/2023 06:40

I was considering buying concert tickets for me and my husband. But then I can't justify the astronomic cost. The cheapest tickets go for 200 pounds each and you would probably only see Beyonce as a tiny spot on stage for that money. So we would have to pay 400 pounds for tickets, at least 50 pounds for a babysitter, overnight hotel accommodation for us and the kids (she doesn't stop where we live), food and travel costs.

Would probably be around 1000 pounds and I'd rather hold on to that money and put it in a savings account or book a weeks holiday for the whole family somewhere nice.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/02/2023 01:07

My immediate thoughts are that pre Bey/destiny's child, music was very much "I love you", "I need you", "I can ne what you need"

Then Destiny's Child came along and very much blew that out of the water.

I'm not a Beyonce fan as such but her live performance of Love On Top shows just how actually incredible a performer she is.

TLC did it all that first.

francopan · 11/02/2023 01:09

Maybe the music’s not for you, and that’s ok. I’m definitely not going to shell out £200+ to go to one of these shows. But saying she’s “overrated” is laughable.

She is an empowering figure for many, particularly young black women and girls, and a vocal and significant advocate of gender and racial equality. She proudly platforms black music and black culture. She is a phenomenal businesswoman. She established a foundation for survivors of Hurricane Katrina, donated over $6m to mental health charities over the pandemic, and set up a charity that supports further education for disadvantaged kids in the US and abroad and paid for coronavirus testing for families that couldn’t afford it. Like it or not, she and her music have successfully evolved with every musical trend and phase since the mid-90s and she has total and complete creative control over everything she produces, which in the music industry is basically unheard of.

Divisive? Apparently. Not your cup of tea? Fine. Overrated? Not a chance.

Yeah. I think she's overrated. And a bit odd, if I'm honest.
I did love the Single Ladies video, though. Great routine in those high heels. But then I also loved Blurred Lines!!

Thepossibility · 11/02/2023 06:49

She was really good in Destiny's Child and right after.
I don't get the Grammys outrage these days though. She pumps out album after album of the same sounding songs.
Everyone she has lost to has had more interesting songs.

VestaTilley · 11/02/2023 06:49

I’ve always thought all her songs sound the same.

Isn't that album about her husband cheating? Which is why her sister socked him in the mouth. Allegedly, of course.

Hamster1111 · 11/02/2023 06:53

I loved destiny's child and her earlier solo stuff. I don't really like her newer stuff but clearly lots of people do. I do however - and I know it's silly - feel dissappointed she stayed with Jay z after he cheated. She was such an icon to my teen self about not putting up with shit from men!! I'm sure she cares deeply that she's let me down...
