Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

What's tedious is the dog owners!

blubberyboo · 09/02/2023 17:38

Dogs should not be in cafes full stop unless a guide dog.

just because dog owners are happy for them to put their shitty paws on their own kitchen counter doesn’t mean the rest of us should have to tolerate it

I wouldn’t stay in a dog friendly hotel for this reason too and allergies

Some people won’t like me saying that but I don’t care

I totally agree! I see posts on social
Media of dogs on holiday with there owners all sat on the furniture & on the beds! Disgusting & probably not allowed but dog owners don't care. I would never go to a holiday establishment that allowed dogs.

😂😂 all of us.. every single one. Even the ones doing nothing wrong

Flinstones · 09/02/2023 17:43

Ok! I'll rephrase! The ones that leave them at home or outside on the floor are not tedious!! I think you knew exactly what I meant though!

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 17:45

I wouldn't go to a holiday let that allows any pets at all. But that's fine as there's loads that don't.

'Dog hating' is always being thrown around which is very tedious. I don't think this thread is dog hating though, it's possible to like them but still not want one sitting next to you while you eat a meal in a pub.

I haven't got a clue what you mean. Your logic is completely lost on me duck.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 17:47

Oh no, we're adding ducks into the mix now. Are they also in the pub?

If there is a pond

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 17:50

No pond, they should be allowed to sit at the bar surely, or on the chairs. It's only fair.

It literally wouldn't bother me in the slightest

I don't hate dogs at all, it's definitely some of the owners on this thread that are really annoying!

Yes of course you wouldn't. It might upset the dogs though.

Some dog owners get really aggressive, though, when places don’t accept dogs.

All the cafes in our town now let dogs in, but until a few months ago there was still one that didn’t (tiny cafe, about 5 tables and there really isn’t room for even a medium size dog). Instead of using one of the alternatives, dog owners campaigned against this cafe, leaving one star reviews all over the place, social media campaign and everything.

Owners gave in to them in the end, and I can understand why, but they probably aren’t making any more profit (as it was always full anyway) - just couldn’t deal with the constant aggression.

I actually think there should be some kind of licensing scheme with maximum of, idk, 50, 75% of a town’s cafes and restaurants able to allow dogs? That would give everyone a choice, at least.

Do not believe this for one minute!

Your choice. But it's not going to stop anytime soon!

LexMitior · 09/02/2023 18:24

@vivainsomnia - ah but you see, you assume that the dog is up to a long train journey. From what you say, your dog may be overwhelmed- then we return to, the dog is being taken to places which will stress it out, for the needs of the owner.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/02/2023 16:27

Bit daft of you going into somewhere that allows them then really. Like me whinging about kids at a soft play.

Cafes and restaurants were not designed for dogs. Soft play is designed for kids.

Well in this part of the country pub pubs have always been that way.

Same here. I started frequenting pubs more than 50 years ago and the ones round here have always welcomed dogs. It’s lovely in the winter - roaring fire with a couple of labs/retrievers spread out asleep in front of it. That’s what a country pub should be like.

Dogcafedreamer · 09/02/2023 18:29

@ThisIsBrandNewInformation cafes and restaurants where I am are deffo made for dog walkers and their dogs.

Dogcafedreamer · 09/02/2023 18:30

Dog free cafes = boring cafes!
