Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I said it would be like me whinging there was kids sitting in a soft play. Ffs

But whinging about children being at a soft play makes no sense. The soft play is for children exclusively.

Why not? Am I not allowed?

Yeah, you're allowed.

Just a bit OTT 😃

20viona · 09/02/2023 16:42

I absolutely hate dogs in bars and restaurants. Not a dog person clearly.

Haha right yeah. Of the ott things on this thread it's me going 'ffs'. Pull the other one

Bloody hell. Nothing gets past you does it.

Not really - it would be like saying you don't like eating next to pets in a pet shop.

But i'm not - i'm saying not in a restaurant.
I don't 'expect' to find animals in the pub.

Well I do. I think pubs and dogs go hand in hand. In fact my parents had another dog purely for their walks to the pub. They weren't the same without their old dog.

This thread is completely bonkers! You can not compare children & dogs! This ridiculous attitude is why we have so many dogs absolutely EVERYWHERE
I'll say it again, dogs inside places is disgusting & I hope this is a trend we got past very quickly, the only thing I've taken away from this thread is a lot more people than I thought don't like dogs inside places! Hopefully if we all shout a little louder we can get back to how it should be, leave your dog at home or sit outside!

You go girl, ur pubz ur rulez

Dogs have been allowed in pubs since pubs bloody began.. it's not going to change.

DidyouNO · 09/02/2023 16:48

I don't mind dogs but I choose not to have one and I'm fed up with them being everywhere. On the furniture. Eating and licking the tables and crockery, I recently had one jump up at our table and take from my plate. We now have a very complex 3 year old foster child and I just can't go anywhere that allows dogs. It's getting harder to go anywhere tbh.

vivainsomnia · 09/02/2023 16:49

So dogs don't need train seats, or feeding from tables, or special little clothes because that is about the owner. They can be looked after better, given some training and they will be happy with that
Again, you are making generalisations though. A small dog can very much feel overwhelmed and scared under feet in a train and indeed need the stimulation of looking out on a long journey. You wouldn't know what my dog needs because they are not forcibly be the same as another dog. My neighbour dog is petrified of noise. It would be cruel to take them to a display outdoor. My dog isn't affected at all abd would be happy with us at a noisy party rather than home alone. You can't tell others what their dogs' needs are.

They really aren't the same thing
Nobody has claimed that they are. What is the same thing is jow unpleasant you might find them in tour vicinity. That's comparable.

so how would you feel if nearly all the places you liked to go adopted a soft play centre in the middle of it?
I'dlook for a new place. One of our local club built a massive children play park in their garden so it started to attract more families with young children. I don't go anymore that's it. I can never fully ensure there won't be young children when I go out, but I pick places they are less likely to be. It's common sense!

I'm a very responsible dog owner but all these dog haters just make me want to wind them up even more than they wind themselves up. Talk of banning dogs from pubs, please be serious!

My money is as good as the dog haters. Get used to it or go elsewhere whiners!

Your money has dog hair on it, so not quite as good. Mine is clean and shiny and doesn’t smell.

Not in these parts. Definitely not inside, maybe in the pub garden. Them being inside the pub is what's changed.

vivainsomnia · 09/02/2023 16:57

Posters: don't like dogs in pub/restaurants etc... solution: ban all dogs from any such places so that we get to enjoy ourselves wherever we choose to go.

Posters: I like to bring my dog to the local pub that welcomes them. Solution: people who don't like it are welcome to dog free places.

But the former insist their wishes are perfectly reasonable and the latter entitled 🤔🤔

Flinstones · 09/02/2023 16:58

I'll say it again..... not just about pubs! Dogs are EVERYWHERE!!!

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 16:58

So comparing children at soft play to dogs in pubs-it's the same thing? Right.

Ok then. You stop in your magical dogless pub part of the country and be glad you have nothing to worry about

Unfortunately it's not dogless, I don't know why you would think that- as I said-things have changed and they are being allowed inside pubs more and more.

Well in this part of the country pub pubs have always been that way.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 09/02/2023 17:08

I think I said this earlier but how can you all
possibly simultaneously believe that everyone where you are hates dogs in businesses but also that no businesses where you are ban dogs? Why do these businesses choose to do something that everyone hates and how do they remain viable doing it?

It’s just all so futile. Like I said, I don’t often go out to eat nowadays as everywhere is family friendly and kids’ behaviour is often atrocious but I can’t imagine being this furious about it.

vivainsomnia · 09/02/2023 17:18

One in seven bank notes and one in 10 credit cards have traces of poo
Haha, quote from article in the mirror, so not sure about shinny money!

FluffyYucca · 09/02/2023 17:20

Some dog owners get really aggressive, though, when places don’t accept dogs.

All the cafes in our town now let dogs in, but until a few months ago there was still one that didn’t (tiny cafe, about 5 tables and there really isn’t room for even a medium size dog). Instead of using one of the alternatives, dog owners campaigned against this cafe, leaving one star reviews all over the place, social media campaign and everything.

Owners gave in to them in the end, and I can understand why, but they probably aren’t making any more profit (as it was always full anyway) - just couldn’t deal with the constant aggression.

I actually think there should be some kind of licensing scheme with maximum of, idk, 50, 75% of a town’s cafes and restaurants able to allow dogs? That would give everyone a choice, at least.

Whats the name of the cafe?

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 17:33

That’s awful. Leaving bad reviews just because they don’t allow dogs. And there were loads of other places people with dogs could go. ☹️
