Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I walked in to the pub about 10pm last week and saw a woman holding a baby up to her chest - I assumed sleeping. The woman next to her was the same (but I couldn't see clearly). I thought it was a strange time to have a small child out.

They were dogs!

It's all this "fur baby" guff. I know people love their dogs - but it really is going too far.

So you'd have judged them for having their children there or for not having their children there?

I mean, little kids in cafes can be annoying... noisy and messy, but they generally don't put their muddy paws on you or lick your face or piss on your handbag.....

I had a toddler wipe her hands on my hair on the bus once. I don’t want to know what they were wet or dirty with, but my hair was gross after she’d finished. I turned around and looked at mum who just shrugged and said “she’s only little”.

I’ve seen kids licking all sorts in supermarkets and cafes. Not people, granted, but things people will touch or eat. I’ve also seen people changing babies on tables and when I worked in retail so many people used to plonk their nappy-only child on the counter while they rifled through their bags. The same counter where other people put their bags/food/etc.

Humans are grim as fuck basically! i

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 15:54

I agree a lot of humans are grim, but they'll never be as grim as animals.

Humans ARE animals.

No other animal in the world pollutes, litters, or fills the oceans with plastic and rubbish and our sewage quite like we do. We're pretty fucking grim as a species.

We still have all the usual bodily functions on top of that too. We still shed skin and hair, sneeze, and a shocking amount of us don't wash our hands after going to the bathroom, according to many studies.

LexMitior · 09/02/2023 16:15

@vivainsomnia - don't imagine that I don't like animals, I do. They have feelings, needs, and can suffer. Those needs are just theirs. Treat them with respect.

However, they are not little people or babies and our feelings about them should be expressed in a way that says, this is my feeling. And so, you understand that to live with other people, our intense feelings about pets are things that others are not going to share. So dogs don't need train seats, or feeding from tables, or special little clothes because that is about the owner. They can be looked after better, given some training and they will be happy with that.

I also agree that understanding the cognitive ability of an animal can make you understand them better. Cats I think can be at the level of a two year old child. But it's still definitely a cat with all those instincts and it's own nature. Animals have their own dignity.

BotterMon · 09/02/2023 16:22

No issues with proper well trained dogs in pubs who lie under the table and you don't even know they're there until the people get up to leave (although horrible for you if you are allergic).

For me it's the handbag dogs which some people seem to treat as pseudo-children and allow them to eat off plates, sit at the table or even worse on soft furnishings etc.

Some people bring their children in to cafe's and they misbehave. Would you ban all children?

No? Confused

We're talking about Pets. Dogs, snakes, monkeys, lizards, guiniea pigs, spiders, ferrets ect. I don't want any of them on their leads or in their cages right next to me in places where i've paid to sit and eat.

Bit daft of you going into somewhere that allows them then really. Like me whinging about kids at a soft play.

Laiste · 09/02/2023 16:29

@AllThingsServeTheBeam so how would you feel if nearly all the places you liked to go adopted a soft play centre in the middle of it?

I'd sit at a table far enough away it wouldn't bother me or find somewhere to go that didn't have one.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 16:30

Humans ARE animals.

You know exactly what I mean.

Laiste · 09/02/2023 16:31

You can't chose a table 'far away' if someone comes into the restaurant with their pet and sits next to you though.

Laiste · 09/02/2023 16:33

And honestly if you dislike being around children that much you must feel some sympathy for folk who don't want to be around animals.

Children are allowed pretty much everywhere - it must be a nightmare for you.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 16:34

This thread is bonkers, are we now comparing children at soft play (where you would expect to find them) to dogs in pubs?

You could move. Speak up and say can you sit somewhere else? I don't feel strongly enough to ever feel the need though.

All of the places I like to go to allow small children and in my experience when I’m there, small children act like they’re in soft play and their parents let it happen. I don’t like it and I wish there were more adult-only spaces but I accept that businesses can choose who they cater to and families’ money is worth more than mine. I don’t start MN threads complaining about it or insist that it’s something wrong or immoral because it’s not what I like.

Did you actually read my comment? What's bonkers is your comprehension skills

I don't dislike children. Where have I said I did?

I said it would be like me whinging there was kids sitting in a soft play. Ffs

Laiste · 09/02/2023 16:36

I don't really understand why people try to blur the line between pets and children anyway. It's a straw man argument.

They really aren't the same thing.

Replace dog for anything else and you can see how weird it sounds:

You don't like ferrets!? Does that mean you'd ban children??!
It doesn't make sense.

Laiste · 09/02/2023 16:38

Why are you effing and jeffing?

Not said they were the same. Not compared them at all.

I will change my example. It's like whinging about Chinese food in a Chinese restaurant. It's like whinging about the heat but going abroad for a holiday...

Why not? Am I not allowed?

Flinstones · 09/02/2023 16:40

This thread is completely bonkers! You can not compare children & dogs! This ridiculous attitude is why we have so many dogs absolutely EVERYWHERE
I'll say it again, dogs inside places is disgusting & I hope this is a trend we got past very quickly, the only thing I've taken away from this thread is a lot more people than I thought don't like dogs inside places! Hopefully if we all shout a little louder we can get back to how it should be, leave your dog at home or sit outside!

Oblomov23 · 09/02/2023 16:40

I love dogs but hate that they are allowed everywhere now.

Not really - it would be like saying you don't like eating next to pets in a pet shop.

But i'm not - i'm saying not in a restaurant.
I don't 'expect' to find animals in the pub.
