Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

@AllThingsServeTheBeam - well the cat is making a choice! Leased cats are... well very sad for the cat. But that's another thread. What I mean is, I think perhaps especially since COVID, people place their emotional states and feelings on animals in a way that previously they would not. I don't think it's good for the animals. They are not babies.

I personally wouldn't but some leashed cats enjoy it. I have seen cats camping before now with their owners and they've been leashed and loving life. I suppose it's what the cat gets used to.

One of mine would probably like the camping like and walks etc, but wouldn't like to be leashed

@Dogscanteatonions

people are the issue not the dogs
people should
need to pass an exam to get a licence to have a dog.

What would the exam entail though?

"Are you an entitled arsehole?" No

"Ok - you can have a dog".

MrsMikeDrop · 09/02/2023 10:18

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 09/02/2023 10:13

Should need to pass an exam to own any pet or have kids as well

Totally agree with this!

No it's not cultural or about animal lovers. It's a recent development by people who are cracked enough to talk about fur babies.

I've got a cat. There are some nutty people who give cats baths, put them in prams or backpacks and take them on hikes. The idea that domestic pets need these experiences is really down to the emotional state of the owner. Nothing else.

I’ve never heard anyone say fur babies except in a derogatory sense. But our dog is very much part of our family. We enjoy having her with us as much as possible. There’s lots of things others do in public which really really annoy me, but you can’t control others. Does it impact you if someone takes their cat on a hike? Maybe the cat enjoys it?

Theres a bizarre group of people on Mumsnet who want the world to be run exactly how it suits them. This usually involves slagging people off for doing something which has no impact in others.

I’ve never ever seen a dog (and I’ve had dogs all my life) bother anyone else in a pub, they generally just sit or lie there. I certainly have never seen one have a wee on the floor. I’ve caught colds, flu, covid etc from sharing a bed with a person never caught anything from having a dog on my bed!

Dogs who jump up random strangers are rare (much rarer than children who launch themselves at unsuspecting dogs).

I really don’t know what sort of places certain Mumsnetters are hanging out.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 11:10

I don’t think you can compare to a cat going on a hike (which happens but is rare-I’ve only seen a couple on IG etc) to dogs inside pubs (which is a regular occurrence). The cat on the hike wouldn’t impact anyone at all.

vivainsomnia · 09/02/2023 11:15

Absolutely, but who says they are wrong and you are right?

I don't think it's good for the animals
And you are entitled to your view, but why is it so hard to accept that this doesn't equal to I'm right, you're wrong'?

I disagree with a lot of what is deemed the best educational approaches to raising children, but I accept that things do changes, that how we raise our children is a personal choice and that I don't know better than everyone else.

The issue with posters here who go on and on about how dogs shouldn't be allowed in public places is not their point of view, it's that they think all dogs owners should agree with them and if not they are judged, called names and deemed unreasonable.

Let's accept we don't all agree and stick to what the law allows and business owners choose as their business model.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 11:19

Sadly I think dogs in pubs are here to stay. I can’t see any business owner making more money because they do suddenly reversing the decision.

Would be useful if there was a big sign outside and on the home page of their websites it’s made clear so people can choose.

Rollin · 09/02/2023 11:24

'I’ve never heard anyone say fur babies except in a derogatory sense.'

Wish I could say the same! Our global company has chat groups for both 'dog lovers' and 'cat lovers' and it's full of absolute nutjobs going on about fur babies and posting pics of their pets wearing the most bizarre outfits or going on planes etc with them

Honestly dogs running up to strangers seems to be happening more and more.

My husband loves dogs but can’t have one because of me. He has gone running for years. In the last few months an increasing number of dogs have been running up to him and chasing him. Last time one was actually nipping at his legs as he ran and he shouted at the owner to control their dog. That is very very unlike him.

I have had a dog ruin a picnic twice. Maybe that’s not that frequent?

But I promise it’s not a MN fiction. Dogs just lying down or sitting on the ground should be tolerated. I don’t love it in cafes but I accept it. It’s when they come and nuzzle my feet and bag that I start to get annoyed. And a few weeks ago when a woman let her dog walk up and down the tube carriage nuzzling others’ legs and bags. It honestly didn’t use to be like this.

@Sparklingbrook absolutely agree with you there. One is a fricking insane thing to do, and I would seriously question the mental health of an owner 'walking' a cat and the other is a normal thing to do with a dog.

Rollin · 09/02/2023 11:29

I also don't get people who have 'indoor' cats. Seems really cruel. Take an animal that loves to roam and lock it up because you're afraid it'll roam off from you...

vivainsomnia · 09/02/2023 11:29

@Rollin, why would you go on those chat when you clearly not a lover of dogs.

I don't agree in dressing up dogs, but don't agree on people dressing their kids as mini adults either. That's my opinion, I don't consider those who think differently as nutjobs. Why the need for such derogatory words for people who just different principles to you. What harm does he do you how the dress their dog? Does it make you feel better as a person to scroll those chat judging those people?

A couple of years ago I saw someone pushing a large rabbit in a pushchair. Odd.

Pinkocsb · 09/02/2023 11:31

Totally with you OP on this. I’m also allergic to dogs. Happy for them to be let in to places, but not on seats or tables. Sometimes you can’t tell a dog was sitting there before you arrived until you start wheezing. Also dogs on bus seats! Please keep them on the floor people! Thank you

My dog being in a dog friendly pub doesn't impact anyone.

It’s a shame they aren’t all like yours. ☹️

LexMitior · 09/02/2023 11:33

I'm not comparing the acts as the same. Clearly not the same.

But it's the emotional needs of owners, reconfigured as a need for the animal. Now that is silly.

Pets are not little people. People are, for good reasons, more important than pets, even if we love animals, that doesn't say that socially, room needs to be made or accommodated.

What that person says, my feelings about my dog cat or whatever are sufficient and more important that yours. That is very thin skinned, and nothing to do with the animal. It's the owner!

Laiste · 07/02/2023 10:56

Waiting for all the I would never let my dog do x y z posts ...

and neither would i, for what it's worth.

But - some people will always push boundaries, take the piss, have no common sense and/or have no regard for anyone else.

For this reason i think there should be no dogs allowed in cafes and shops (except guide dogs obvs) because some people always make everything shit by being selfish ignorant twats.

Some people bring their children in to cafe's and they misbehave. Would you ban all children?

CTRALTDEL · 09/02/2023 11:35

Cats on leads going for 'walks' utterly bizarre. Dogs in pubs or cafes = normal.

It is. My kids don't bother anyone else either, but others people's kids do. You can't just not allow things because some people are dicks.

Are you a psychologist? You have no idea what drives people to treat their dog close to how they treat or would treat a child. Everyone have emotional needs and how they deal with it is their business as long as they remain respectful.

Everyone can point their finger to someone else and consider something they do or say silly.

It amazes me the number of posts on MN criticizing others for being intolerant and yet this has to be overall the most intolerant place to express oneself.

So what if people treat they dogs like kids. So what if people treat their kids like mini adults. So what if your grandma wants to dress like a 25 years old? Where no harm is done there is no place for judgement!

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2023 12:01

Yes I’ve never seen a cat on a walk in RL.

My neighbour leash-trained her cat and they go on walks. It’s good for the local wildlife population as the cat can’t catch birds but he’s getting to explore the neighbourhood and check on his territory. It’s a growing trend due to cat impacts on local biodiversity vs the knowledge that keeping a cat indoors can be cruel to the cat.

I think a lot of people don’t know much about cats and assume everything that doesn’t fit with their worldview is insane. That’s another wonderful thing we humans do with our higher reasoning powers I guess.
