Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Honestly, none of those scenarios would bother me.

another dog hating thread, tedious.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 07/02/2023 10:50

They’d bother me. I love dogs, but I’m also severely allergic.

Goldandpurplezebra · 07/02/2023 10:50

@MrsSkylerWhite let me guess, you're not allergic

BarrelOfOtters · 07/02/2023 10:50

I really like a dog in a cafe, shop or pub...so I'm afraid I'm not your target audience. There was a lovely small older dog in the pub at the weekend while the rugby was on who was the perfect size to fit on the pub stool while rolled up asleep. I think he'd been chosen for that reason.

There was a collie puppy mugging people for crisps too.

ReamsOfCheese · 07/02/2023 10:52

Yuck about the dog that peed on the floor. That's grim.

Imicola · 07/02/2023 10:52

I love dogs, and don't mind dogs in cafes etc, but ALL of those scenarios would bother me. Dogs should not be on furniture, definitely not with paws on a bar, and if they are not well behaved, quiet and toilet trained they should not be in cafes/bars. What they do in your own home is up to you, but all of these are really disrespectful.

IronCandle · 07/02/2023 10:52

I really don’t like dogs. I hate it that they’re allowed everywhere now.

garlictwist · 07/02/2023 10:52

I agree. We went for a pub meal the other day and there were so many dogs - all over the seats, woofing at each other etc. One of them tripped the waiter up and he dropped a big tray of food as a result.

Moonface31 · 07/02/2023 10:52

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

Imicola · 07/02/2023 10:54

there was a local news story here recently - a shopping centre is doing a trial of allowing dogs, and dog dirt was spotted on the floor in the food court area. Grim

To dogs, no. If I were though I’d just go to one of the (majority) of cafes or pubs where dogs aren’t permitted.

Laiste · 07/02/2023 10:56

Waiting for all the I would never let my dog do x y z posts ...

and neither would i, for what it's worth.

But - some people will always push boundaries, take the piss, have no common sense and/or have no regard for anyone else.

For this reason i think there should be no dogs allowed in cafes and shops (except guide dogs obvs) because some people always make everything shit by being selfish ignorant twats.

TrashyPanda · 07/02/2023 10:57

My friend has a guide dog.
he goes everywhere with him.
my friend says his dog gave him his life back.

im not sure what should happen in a shop/cafe/bus if someone is allergic?

Gulpy · 07/02/2023 10:58

People are just as dirty.

There's probably human shit all over the bar from people not washing their hands.

Once a woman in boots stopped dead in the ailse, listed her maxi skirt, squatted and pissed. Must have had no knickers on. It was th emost shocking and bizarre thing I'd ever seen. Walked off like it was normal.

Would rather it have been a dog 🐶 😂

Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.

I fully accept lots of places allow dogs now it's surely it's not unreasonable to be able to sit on a chair that hasn't had a dog in it

I agree op and I am a dog lover/owner. I once seen a small fluffy dog on an outside table in a garden centre cafe. The said dog was licking its private area, on the table where people eat their food 🙈 and the owner just let it do it while they were all eating & drinking. The owner must have lifted the dog onto the table.
Dogs create mess (hair/food/germs/dog mess) and I don’t want to see that in a cafe, pub or shop.

I'll add I'm very scared of dogs so it's awful for people like me, you can't go anywhere even in a shop & be free from the dogs. I absolutely hate it that they are allowed everywhere! I can't stand being around dogs in eating places. Dogs should stay on the floor & absolutely must not be allowed on the furniture or anywhere near a table. I have no idea why people have to bring there dogs everywhere with them?? Especially nights out in a pub! People leave kids at home, I don't know why dogs have to come out, people treat them like babies! I don't understand it.

WFHbore2023 · 07/02/2023 11:01

Dogs in cafes and pubs don't bother me, I do on occasion take my dog.

What DOES bother me though is when people take them to places like that and don't simply take a blanket to place on the floor and have them stay there.

I've seen 'influencers' with their small dogs on their laps, putting food on the table for the dog to eat directly from, even eating directly from the plate!

If you take a dog, keep it on the floor

Also, 'small dog privilege' shouldn't be a thing. No dogs allowed should mean no dogs (obviously not service dogs) - not 'pick up your dog and carry it around'

bussteward · 07/02/2023 11:01

I absolutely hate dogs in cafes. Our local park has two cafes, dogs allowed in both. Dogs wander around off lead, including trailing their leads, getting underfoot and tripping people; wander underneath other people’s tables; stick their heads onto people’s tables and beg, etc etc. The hound crowd will go “that’s not bad dogs that’s bad owners” but the simplest solution to bad owners is to have dog-free cafes. There’s no need for dogs to come in.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 07/02/2023 11:01

I'm with you, OP. We went out for lunch to a lovely wee cafe but it was full of dogs. Couldn't move for them. To be fair, they were all well behaved but we won't be back. Not a fan of taking dogs everywhere, guide dogs being the exception of course.

Londono · 07/02/2023 11:01

DD stepped in dog poo in John Lewis and there were genuinely so many labradoodle type dogs in there that it could have been any of them. We also had to leave a lovely farm shop type cafe because a dog was barking its head off incessantly - when we explained why we were leaving the staff said they couldn't do anything about it as the site was 'dog friendly'.

Exactly the same here, it's just antisocial and frankly odd when people insist their dog simply must sit by them in the cafe because "they're my fur baby 🥺🥺".

No. It's not a baby, it's a dog. Treat it like a dog, let it do dog things, they will be happier for it!

Not everyone likes dogs or wants to get dog hair on them, even if they're not allergic. I personally couldn't care less about sitting on a sofa where someone's dog has been, but I have the common sense and decency to appreciate that many other people do mind.

Firstly, I'm sure the amount of guide dogs is few enough that dog allergic person meets guide dog scenario is pretty rare.

Secondly i think most dog allergic people would happily relocate to avoid a guide dog the rare times they arrive to find one in a pub or restaurant.

That would limit my options hugely. The majority of places here allow dogs. I accept places allow them and that is the choice of the business but they shouldn't be allowed on the furniture.
