Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

Dogs are dirty animals and should not be allowed in places where food is prepared or served.

theyre not in the kitchen preparing your meal 😂

CohenTree · 07/02/2023 12:07

Unfortunately for the non-dog lovers I think this is simply a majority rules scenario.
The majority of the population (including me) are dog-lovers and would always prefer to give our custom to businesses that allow dogs.
So of course the businesses are going to cater for that. Money talks.

CharmedUndead · 07/02/2023 12:07

I am happy to have dogs in cafes, restaurants and non-food shops. But dogs sit on the floor. Always.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2023 12:10

I don't like dogs in eating places either.

I've been to a few places that have nothing to say they are dog friendly then half way through the meal there's dogs everywhere, yapping, barking and shaking themselves sending dog hair and slobber everywhere.

Fair enough if there's a sign saying Dogs Welcome or a water bowl outside etc. You can then avoid.

Can we blame Covid? Everyone suddenly needed a dog and then a lot of eating places needed all the trade they could get following being closed , so accommodated all these dogs?

Some of the filthy people on this thread lol "people are dirty so why not just let an animal that licks its own arse sit near food". Would hate to know how often some of you wash your hands and clean your houses.

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 11:02

That would limit my options hugely. The majority of places here allow dogs. I accept places allow them and that is the choice of the business but they shouldn't be allowed on the furniture.

That's also the choice of the owner of the business. They're going to choose the option that brings them more income.

even if the majority allow dogs, there are others that don't. Go there. It might limit your options, but that's life. My options are limited as to which places I eat at due to a health issue. I don't demand all cafes/pubs change their menu to suit me.

I'm sure some dog owners would say if they wanted to they should absolutely be allowed to. 😂

peachescariad · 07/02/2023 12:14

This comes down to decent management of the premises. Personally I don't mind dogs in food business but I draw the line with dogs up on customer seating etc. That's just unnecessary and revolting.
Maybe food business owners; who allow dogs inside, could clearly state 'dogs allowed but they must remain on the floor at all times'

I have a theory that dog-owners’ houses are never clean and dog-owners have a lower standard of hygiene generally. I am no clean-freak but this thread is proving my theory!

Because a human once prepared food using dirty hands!

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2023 12:17

I'm no clean freak, and frequently deal with pet hair and the cat litter tray courtesy of my elderly cat, but I don't take her or her hair out with me for everyone else to enjoy whilst eating. Maybe I should. Grin

BubziOwl · 07/02/2023 11:03

The only pub in my local town that doesn't allow dogs is a dingy Wetherspoons. Every single other one does allow them.

And in fairness, most people round here are normal about their dogs so their dogs are well behaved. But I don't think that it's quite that simple to tell people with allergies that they can just find another pub - in some places, they can't.

@BubziOwl

that's very unusual.

but the owner of the business will decide which is better for their business, pubs are not an essential service! Don't like the way they're run, don't go

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 12:17

Cant you take antihistamines before you go out?

Stickytreacle · 07/02/2023 12:18

It's idiot owners that are the issue. I own dogs and would only eat out in a pub that had a separate area for dogs as I appreciate that not everybody likes or can tolerate dogs. I don't know many dogs that enjoy being dragged around a shop anyway and I've witnessed dogs in shops cocking a leg against stock on low shelving, while the owner dragged them past pretending not to notice.

Even as a dog owner I find that grim, and dogs dragged past clothing racks leaving hair everwhere; I at least like my clothing to remain hair free until I get home!

Being considerate towards non dog owners should be a given, they shouldn't have to put up with slobber, hair or worse when they have a day out.

Rollin · 07/02/2023 12:18

'Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.'

I would imagine it is, but as the world isn't going to ban all dogs for you, the best thing you can do is stop going to places that let dogs in. There are lots. I'm surprised to hear that restaurants are allowing dogs on the furniture though. I live in a fairly dog friendly city but anywhere that allows dogs has a 'paws on the floor' policy.
I have yet to walk into a cafe, restaurant or pub to find a dog sitting at the table or at the bar.

Just in case there's a dog that someone doesn't bother looking after?

But nobody has said what will happen if a dog that licks its arse sits near food? What exactly do you think will happen? I think dog owners are probably just more pragmatic, you can say filthy if you want but we are sat here with better immune systems, less allergies and less asthma than the 'clean' people, I know which camp I'd rather be in.

CuteCillian · 07/02/2023 12:20

I love a dog friendly café, in fact I'm in one now. The dogs should remain on the floor ideally but, no one has a problem with a tiny chihuahua sitting on the owners lap, then the owner of the labradoodle thinks it's only fair if my canine chum can climb up as well...

Give it a minute and someone will be along saying they saw a dog in the pub kitchen dicing veg without wearing a hair net...

DD has allergies, so we carry antihistamines and if I was as allergic to dogs as OP claims to be then I absolutely would either be taking one, before going to somewhere I suspected dogs would be, or carry them with me just in cas

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 12:24

It's nothing to do with not looking after the dog. OP suffers from an allergy. So do I. I take antihistamines. There is nothing wrong taking one as a preventive measure.

That or avoiding places that allow dogs. More and more places allow dogs because clearly, it attracts the business. Sadly, minorities prevail. It's just the way it is.

Genuinely asking, where are all these places where dogs are allowed in everywhere? I live in a small city and there are two cafes that allow dogs and 3 shops. That’s it! Majority of places do not allow dogs around here!

Sounds great, where do you live?

They seem to let them in everything in my city, including the middle of busy restaurants. It's gross.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2023 12:27

There's a place locally to me that does wonderful breakfast and brunches and make no secret that it's the ultimate dog friendly place which is great, there's signs outside and dog water bowls etc. There is no doubt as on their website they say this-

Our business model is based on good food and a love of animals, if you do not like dogs or have an allergy there is a good chance during your time with us you may come in contact with/be seated next to a dog/dog’s. If you do not like dogs or prefer not to eat near dogs then this establishment may not be to your liking.

People can't say they weren't warned. Maybe more should do this, there is a place to sit where dogs aren't allowed so there's always an option to book ahead for one too.

OoooohMatron · 07/02/2023 12:28

Doesn't bother me but then I'm not allergic. I especially love a dog in a country pub. I Love dogsbut don't have one myself

Tiredalwaystired · 07/02/2023 12:28

Moonface31 · 07/02/2023 10:52

There are plenty of places that don't allow dogs. Go in one of those, problem solved.

Does Dog trump paying customer then?

this person has an allergy - so a legit reason not to want dogs on the seats.

would you also say “ No disabled access? Just go somewhere else!”

Not really on when you look at it like that.

Dogs are permitted yes, but not in an irresponsible way. There’s a middle ground in this case, rather than suggesting either party can’t attend. Which is ensuring your dogs presence isn’t unnecessarily unhygienic
