Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

I have the same reaction when I see children/toddlers who are clearly still in nappies sitting/standing in shopping trollies. Not in the designated seat bit mind, the actual bit where shopping is placed
This is far more unhygienic than a dog on a sofa; shit/pee and dirt from outside directly where people place their food.
And not all food comes in a wrapper (before anyone starts); fruit and veg for example

I'm a bit confused as to why them being in nappies makes a difference?

I LOVE dogs in cafes & bars. Even better if I get to fuss them!

if you’re allergic, why not go to the places that don’t allow dogs.

Precisely, you can't please all the people all the time and there is room in the world for everyone.

VivaLesTartes · 07/02/2023 11:47

Absolutely love taking my dog out with me and when she's not there I love meeting friendly dogs in pubs etc.

But I wouldn't let my dog on the furniture and we would remove her if she wouldn't settle or was causing a commotio. We also make sure we are tucked out the way.

As usual dogs not the problem but people.

HerbertChops · 07/02/2023 11:48

Agree with you op. I love dogs and have a dog, I don’t take him in shops, pubs or cafes as I don’t think dogs should be inside where food is served. I will sit outside with him if there is outside seating. He’s a cockerpoo so doesn’t moult but I still wouldn’t let him sit on chairs or sofas. We have allergies (not to dogs) in our family so I’m mindful that not everyone wants a dog in their face everywhere they go.

Forestwalks · 07/02/2023 11:48

Unfortunately again it’s a very small number of bad dog owners that give the good dog owners a bad name.
We often take out dog out with us to cafes/pubs etc but we have a very well behaved dog who is fully trained not to do her toileting inside only outside, is not allowed on furniture at home so definitely not out either.
We had a lovely dinner in a pub a couple of weeks back where she laid under the table (still on a lead) and slept for 2 hours. No problem what’s so ever.

ForestMountainsDesertOcean · 07/02/2023 11:49

It's vile. I avoid everywhere that says it is dog friendly. They have lost my custom.

RemoteControlDoobry · 07/02/2023 11:51

I don’t mind them but I would mind if any of us were allergic. I don’t particularly like taking my dogs in cafes because one of them whinges the whole time because he wants to explore and say hello to everyone. The other one barks whenever he sees another dog. It’s not very relaxing!

However, we have a local shop that allows dogs and that means that I often combine our afternoon walk with buying stuff for dinner. It’s a challenge because they want to sniff everything and I don’t want to cause any damage so I rush straight in and out. Dog owners never get to go in shops because by the time we’ve been on a walk we can’t be bothered to go out again alone!

Sick of seeing them in supermarkets. Including one that was tied up to a pole and began vomiting on the floor. Staff do nothing. Since when is it OK to bring dogs into a supermarket?

It's not. I complain every time, and the staff do deal with it.

I would have thought that was obvious.

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 07/02/2023 11:54

No dogs other than service dogs in places that serve food. In an ideal world anyway. It’s just gross.

GoodChat · 07/02/2023 11:54

Well clearly it's not @follyfoot37, unless you're saying they're in nappies that haven't been changed for a day as it takes quite a lot for a toddler to leak out of a nappy.

leithreas · 07/02/2023 11:55

Leobynature · 07/02/2023 11:43

I dislike dogs, I think it’s really unhygienic to have them wear food is served and at times dangerous too. Britain is dog obsessed

It would indeed be unhygienic to have dogs wear food. A dog sat on the floor where food is served though? Meh. A dog even sat on a chair where food is served l, what do you think is going to happen to the food to suddenly make it unhygenic? They aren't in the kitchen rolling your sausage rolls with their paws.

Forestwalks · 07/02/2023 11:55

ForestMountainsDesertOcean · 07/02/2023 11:50

It is a problem for those of us with allergies.

Then the poster needs to take it up with the venues management as they make the rules.
There are far more restaurants/pubs/cafes that don’t allow dogs so easy to take your business elsewhere.
Im allergic to cats, I wouldn’t go to a place that allowed cats.

sunseaandme · 07/02/2023 11:57

YANBU. I agree. I'm not a dog hater but having one nearby while I'm eating /drinking makes me feel 🤮

DragonHouse · 07/02/2023 11:58

YANBU. It’s vile. But dog owners are entitled and think everyone should love their smelly mutts.

I will not go into any shop or cafe that allows dogs (excluding guide, of course).

ThisIsBrandNewInformation · 07/02/2023 11:58

I am laughing at people who don’t think a dog urinating on the floor of a cafe is an issue. Tells me all I need to know about them!

It's the not cleaning it up or notifying staff that's an issue.

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 11:00

Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.

I fully accept lots of places allow dogs now it's surely it's not unreasonable to be able to sit on a chair that hasn't had a dog in it

@Dogscanteatonions

Then go to one of the many places dogs aren't permitted, it's not rocket science.

what do you hope to gain out if yet another dog bashing thread?

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 12:01

For all the posters saying go elsewhere - the vast majority of places here allow dogs, I'm on a touristy place.

I don't need to avoid these places but I would just like the courtesy of the furniture being for humans not dogs so it doesn't set off allergy. Pubs/cafes/restaurants are actually for humans after all!

She hasn't bashed dogs. She literally said she loves dogs. She's bashed shit owners.

TheFretfulPorpentine · 07/02/2023 12:02

Dogs are dirty animals and should not be allowed in places where food is prepared or served.

What do I hope to gain? Well it would be good if even just one person who thinks their dog can do no wrong actually thinks twice before letting it on furniture in public

I absolutely hate dogs in cafes. Our local park has two cafes, dogs allowed in both. Dogs wander around off lead, including trailing their leads, getting underfoot and tripping people; wander underneath other people’s tables; stick their heads onto people’s tables and beg, etc etc. The hound crowd will go “that’s not bad dogs that’s bad owners” but the simplest solution to bad owners is to have dog-free cafes. There’s no need for dogs to come in.

Owners want to be able to get a coffee/lunch when they're out & have their dog with them.

Same as you want to get a coffee/lunch.

you don't NEED to go in the cafe either. Your 'wants' don't outweigh others wants.
