Dogs in cafes etc

1000 replies

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 10:46

I love dogs but I'm utterly fed up of them being cafes pubs restaurants shops etc, partly because I am allergic and partly because so many are poory behaved

However in the last week I've seen:

A man at the bar in a pub with his dog on the bar stool next to him with its paws up on the actual bar

A photo on the Facebook account of a favourite bar/ restaurant of a big hairy dog lying on one of the sofas - I'd have an allergic reaction if I sat on furniture right after a dog had been in it.

And to top it off yesterday I was in a cafe and the table next to me had a puppy which peed on the floor profusely which they halfheartedly mopped up with just a tissue from a pocket and didn't even tell staff so they could properly clean it. This was right next to serving counter.

I know a huge amount of people on Mumsnet are crazy pro dogs but I defy anyone to defend this. How do people think this is ok??

Aibu to think you should keep your dogs off furniture in these places and that you have an obligation to ensure its cleaned up properly if your 3 dog messes?

2 wrongs don't make a right though.

So far we've had ''i saw a woman squat down and piss on the floor of a shop'' and ''some people change their kids' nappies on the table'' ...

So? How is this a defence of letting more dogs into more businesses? Even more dirt, hair and noise is the answer?

Confused

I love a diog friendly pub. You would hate it where I live. Digs are welcome in supermarkets, shops. , Restaurants , museums. Everywhere.

Why shouldn't they be? They are no more unhygienic than a person (particularly a child that touches everything. )

I love it. The more dogs the better.

I’m of this opinion. Can’t believe how many people on mumsnet hate dogs.

Businesses allow them as there’s a huge call for it, it clearly makes business sense to them as if it didn’t they wouldn’t do it - sadly those who don’t want dogs in places are in the minority and businesses don’t cater for the minority as they don’t make money that way. It sounds harsh but like it or lump it.

You’d still be allergic to that chair if a guide dog had been sat up against though? I’m so allergic to cats I can’t sit next to someone to owns a cat, let alone the cat itself. But the simple answer to that is keeping some antihistamines in my purse. It’s not difficult.

But there really aren't that many guide dogs around compared to the huge amount of non-guide dogs. I'm sure people who are allergic to dogs are perfectly happy to accommodate guide dogs.

Sunshineboo · 07/02/2023 11:18

it's down to each establishment thought isn't it. personally - i am not keen on small children and used to enjoy a pub lunch without little kids running around.

Recently this has changed well over the last 10 years or so, and now there are only a few pubs where I can go for lunch and not have surrounding by families, so I go to those, assuming the other pubs are getting good business from the family trade, then all is good right?

So it's the same with the Cafes. There are Cafes that are not dog friendly and pubs and restaurants too - go to those

And before you say you're allergic to dogs, I have autism that i mask well, bar being very sensitive to loud noises. Screeching young children, which sounds to their parents like pleasant play, impacts me massively. this is why i avoid these places, despite the fact that some places which i previously loved have changed into this vibe

LexMitior · 07/02/2023 11:18

Jeez. Maybe a dog friendly pub is okay but not a restaurant.

Cosyblankets · 07/02/2023 11:20

Where are all these badly behaved dogs?
I have a dog. If I take him to a pub or cafe the biggest problem I have is that other people want to fuss him and he's happy to oblige whereas I would rather he just sat under the table.
I don't think I've ever taken him anywhere where at least one person hasn't come over to us.

vivainsomnia · 07/02/2023 11:22

I love dogs, and don't mind dogs in cafes etc, but ALL of those scenarios would bother me. Dogs should not be on furniture, definitely not with paws on a bar, and if they are not well behaved, quiet and toilet trained they should not be in cafes/bars

I take my dog to cafe, pubs etc ...any chance i get but totally agree with the above. I wouldn't allow this behaviour. Thankfully, they are very well behaved and this behaviour would not be tolerated.

Do you know what's tedious? Breaking out in hives and wheezing with asthma after coming into contact with dog hair.

I fully accept lots of places allow dogs now it's surely it's not unreasonable to be able to sit on a chair that hasn't had a dog in it

So just go to places that don't allow dogs and stop moaning.
There are more that don't than do.
What would you do if you came into contact with a Service dog in an enclosed space?

NerdyBird1 · 07/02/2023 11:22

A dog peed on the floor of a pub and the owner got a scrunched up tissue from their pocket to dab it...

but never mind because you once read that on MN that someone changed a nappy on a table....

I must be on another planet...

2chocolateoranges · 07/02/2023 11:23

I’m the same, I have a severe allergy to animal hair and have been hospitalised on a few occasions due to it.

if I’m in a crowd or at a bar I can tell who has dogs and if there has been a dog sitting near where I am. The usual itchy throat and breathlessness starts and I’m miserable, have taken to carrying antihistamines everywhere.

I don’t want a dog sitting inches from my table while I’m eating food and I don’t want to hear dogs barking when I’m out having a relaxing afternoon with friends in a cafe or a bar.

we have stopped going to the local bars/ restaurants who allow dogs in as it makes me feel ill and it’s pointless being out.

NerdyBird1 · 07/02/2023 11:23

I don't actually mind dogs inside shut I think I draw the line at urinating where people eat and not even cleaning it up properly :O

Yeah I really don't get this hygiene thing, have you met people? There are some right stinkers out there. I live in a house with 2 dogs. They sit on the sofa, they look at me when I eat, I get dog hair on me, I have yet to come down with any dog-related disease. What is it people think that dog owners are catching off their pets all of the time? What do you think you are going to catch from a dogs paws on a bar that you couldn't catch from a humans hands on the bar or money being left on the bar?

This!

gogohmm · 07/02/2023 11:25

My stays on the floor and doesn't mess inside ever, that goes without saying! But around here most tables will have a dog with them and most are very well behaved, far better behaved than some of the young humans jumping on the sofas in the pub and parents not telling them to stop!

Exactly

SharkVega · 07/02/2023 11:26

I think I need to move to somewhere more dog friendly.

It's definitely a minority of cafes/coffee shops that allow dogs inside. Quite a few allow them in their patio areas but if I'm on my own I can't actually order in that scenario unless there's table service.

A local garden centre has a good setup, they have two indoor seating areas and dogs are excluded from one. Seems like a good compromise.

Vinorosso74 · 07/02/2023 11:26

I'm another one who's sick of them everywhere. There's a small department store near us which allows them, I don't want dog hair on anything I buy! Like kids, if they're well behaved fine and if they're not a trip hazard.
A couple near us have a lovely dog they take to the pub. They sit outside, away from main walkway, the dog has a blanket which it snoozes on, treats and a water bowl. All very calm, I don't want someone's dog jumping up when I'm carrying a round back from the bar!

The overwhelming majority of places in my town let dogs in, it's not that simple as not going.

My allergy to dogs is ok until I come into direct contact with dog hair so I'm ok being in a place with them but if dogs are allowed on the furniture I'll get a reaction. It's not unreasonable for them to not be on the furniture, quite apart from allergies not everyone wants to be covered in dog hair!

I've never my life come into direct close contact with a service dog but obviously a service dog trump's my needs anyway but they are trained to be well behaved.

bloodyplanes · 07/02/2023 11:28

I understand the allergy thing as i am severely allergic to cats, however the other things wouldn't bother me at all. As long as the dog isn't near the food or drink then I wouldn't see a problem.

Gall10 · 07/02/2023 11:28

If the original poster had substituted the word dog with the word child….I’d totally agree!

gogohmm · 07/02/2023 11:29

If you don't like dogs go somewhere that doesn't allow them eg Wetherspoons

smileladiesplease · 07/02/2023 11:30

Much prefer seeing dogs anywhere to small children to be honest

bussteward · 07/02/2023 11:30

Would love to know where these mythical places are that don’t allow dogs, they’d get my custom all day every day!

I know of two dog-free places: a lovely park in Chichester, the only park I’ve ever known that’s entirely dog-free – not “dogs on leads” but NO DOGS. It’s utterly wonderful, and obviously the cafe in the park is dog-free too – and the ace bookshop in Alfriston whose gloriously eccentric owners hate dogs, and also have chickens in the garden. It’s increasingly difficult, almost impossible, to find a dog-free pub or cafe. The “just go to this non-existent place, then!” argument is ridiculous. Don’t you think we’d go there if we could? How about you tie Mutley up outside the human establishment and spend five minutes apart from your fur baby for the sake of everyone else?

Dogscanteatonions · 07/02/2023 11:30

As for people saying that people are just as unhygienic as dogs - the vast vast majority of humans shower or bath daily and wash their hands frequently, especially after Gibb to the loo.

Every single dog licks its arse every day and that of other dogs! Not seen many humans at that (although doubtless some do 🤣)
