If you take vitamin supplements have you noticed a difference in how you feel?

I take Vit D every day, I take a 4000iu one and I’m now a bit worried as the NHS website says that 1000iu is enough, but I live in Scotland which is why I take the higher dose.
I take magnesium which I’ve ran out of so need to get more, I feel I sleep a bit better when I take it.
I also take Vitamin B complex, which has also run out.

I tried zinc but it didn’t agree with me and I tried biotin as my nails aren’t good and my hair is quite fine, but it didn’t agree with me either.

I tried collagen tablets but they were huge and I struggled with them so I’m going to try the vital proteins powder, I’m really hoping it doesn’t taste too nasty.

Magnesium and B2 (riboflavin). I take them because there’s some research to suggest they can improve symptoms for migraine sufferers and I’ve been plagued by migraines since my early teens. The migraines have not disappeared but are much milder in intensity. The only really bad migraine I’ve had since I started taking them, was when I’d run out and didn’t take them for a week!

Pixiedust1234 · 06/02/2023 01:02

I find it easier to take sprays rather than tablets (as I take so many for other things) so most of mine are from the Better You range.

Vit D with K2, 3,OOO IU
Vit B12
Iron
Also take a chewable Vit C with them

I now feel slightly more energetic and my dark cloud is lifting but it took several months before I noticed the mood change as it was so gradual.

I didn't realise they did magnesium in spray form so will look out for that next time!

I've been taking a lowish dose of vit D (1,000 IU) all winter and have noticed absolutely no difference in anything.

If you are deficient in vitamin D and apparently most people in the U.K. are then that’s probably not a strong enough dose. Mines a 3,000IU mouth spray

what type and dose of magnesium are poeple taking?

You should aim for 500mg

@TomatoSandwiches @RedDogBlueDog I also have a young adult son with aspergers and am interested in how the magnesium threonate might help!

Not sure about Asperger’s, but L-Threonate is said to cross the blood brain barrier so is said to be good for anxiety. I believe it is being studied in the case of ASD.

I’m sure this thread has mentioned about three different types of magnesium. I’m totally confused. What are the magnesium bog standard tablets I buy in Superdrug then?

There are different types of magnesium said to do different things. Some of it is used as a laxative, so investigate what you are on.

40sNonBlondes · 05/02/2023 19:29

what type and dose of magnesium are poeple taking?

I’m taking L-Threonate to help with sleep, I also have Epsom salt baths as that is magnesium too

Siameasy · 06/02/2023 07:49

For peri I take Ashwargandha which I feel helps with anxiety and also CBD and magnesium. My sleep has improved.

For immunity I take vitamin D, I sunbathe when I can and in winter months add zinc, rose hip and Sambucol. I also make my own version of the M&S immunity hotshot (has turmeric and lemons in). I don’t get ill as much as most other people I know.

Wond3rment · 06/02/2023 08:00

Very interesting thread, thanks OP.

I take:

  • A multivitamin with A, C & E. If I stop taking them for a week my nails return to their sad peeling existence but when I take them consistently my nails are fab. I have hair that hairdressers describe ‘a lot of thin hair’ - this mix A,C & E is also great for my hair. It’s in great condition when I take the multivitamins consistently
  • Omega 3, not sure if this does anything notably for me to be honest. Might take it out of the mix
  • Iron, I’m prune to anemia so take iron regularly. Anyone remember with GPs would give you Iron injections. The lift was immense, definitely worth the skin discolouration and numbness at the injection point (in my view)
  • Turmeric, this was recommended as I have inflammation around my SI joint that causes real pain. I notice when I stop taking it so it’s a keeper

I have run out of Magnesium, having read this thread I think I need to do a little research before replacing to ensure I have the right one. I have a restless leg that flares up from time to time which I take the Magnesium for.

I have a box of Vit D in the cupboard which I might start using. I’m very tired and concentration is shot to pieces, Vit D might help.

In the past I have taken Vit B supplements and have also had Vit B injections when levels were very low. Probably need my blood done.

Magnesium
Biotin
Marine Collagen

I'm in surgical menopause and can't take HRT so these help with my sleep, hair and aches and pains. I ran out of magnesium last week and didn't get any for a week, i definitely noticed that my sleep quality reduced.

QuizzlyBear · 06/02/2023 09:06

Started taking Lumity vitamins two years ago as peri menopause had hit and I felt crap all the time.

It's amazing. Pricy but I've not had as much as a sniffle in all that time, while my DH and kids have had colds, flu, viruses and Covid. My bleurgh feeling and achiness has gone.

I keep threatening to quit my subscription and they keep offering me discounts, so it keeps the cost manageable.

Endeavour1971 · 06/02/2023 09:29

I'm jealous of everyone saying that magnesium helps with sleep. I took 500mg daily for 3 months and it did absolutely nothing. Nada. 😥

Do you have a good bedtime routine ?

@RedDogBlueDog
Sorry for the late reply. It is calming, makes him more focussed, less fidgety/restless, less distracted and better sleep. He also takes Fish Oils (we use Equazen ones). He also suspects ADHD but never had a diagnosis Diagnosed with Aspergers when he was 7).

Neither of us can tolerate Magnesium Glycinate (as it makes us wired and horrible insomnia - learned the hard way!)

Epsom salts is fab for the bath and you can also get epsom salts shower gel, as well as Mag sprayes, lotion, etc - great for absorption.

The key with Magnesium is to tailor it to your individual needs. The stuff you buy from the supermarkets, etc is Oxide - not that easily absorbed but great for slow moving bowels. constipation, etc (my daughter swears by it and it cured years of a sluggish colon and keeps her regular). Just check out reviews and do a bit of research to see which type would suit the best.
Hope this helps.

pinkhousesarebest · 06/02/2023 10:45

Magnesium and turmeric - one for sleeping and one for energy.

MrsAvocet · 06/02/2023 10:49

I started taking osteocare about 6 months ago. I don't have any deficiencies as fas as I'm aware but I am small, post menopausal and have had a couple of broken bones in the last few years so it seemed like a sensible idea to me. It may of course be complete coincidence but I definitely feel healthier generally, and since I started taking it I have not had any infectious illness at all, even when the rest of the family have been unwell. Or at least I may have had a minor sniffle for a dy or two, when everyone else has had really heavy colds. So I'm starting to think I did need the Vit D, and not just for my bone health.

Rebel2023 · 06/02/2023 10:58

Vitamin D (4000) a day as I had levels of 12 Blush so I take these after I had a high dose course
Multi vitamin from feel
Bio Kult pro cyan (prone to UTIs)

ThisWOMANWontWheesht · 06/02/2023 11:45

This thread should be sponsored by the Magnesium Marketing Board! 😃

I take magnesium too - ionic liquid. It's helped my anxiety and sleep problems. I also take highish doses of vits D3 and B complex, fish oil (I'm otherwise vegetarian) and 5-HTP. My mood is better and I had some chronic pain issues that have improved since I started this regime.

Very interested to read about Mg Threonate. This may be helpful for my daughter.

I’ve just started these after being recommended by a client of mine. She had been taking for 3 months - all over Winter and didn’t have any illness despite her entire family having colds/temperatures etc. She used to be very prone to illness.

If it does help keep illness at bay then the cost will be worth it as I’m self employed so lose a lot of money when ill.

I seem to be sleeping better too.

BarrelOfOtters · 06/02/2023 12:51

I started taking Vitamin D in September, not had a blood test or anything, but I figure for a £5 a month or whatever it can't do any harm. I'm in the NOrth West, and although I'm a redhead, and am outside a lot in summer...I suspect I don't get enough Vit D.

B12 - sublingually - so it dissolves under the tonge and goes into the blood stream. Take a course when I can feel myself getting knackered as I had a severe deficiency and few years ago - and was told I had the b12 levels of an 80 year old... I was 35 at the time.

But I also eat fruit and nuts and seeds. Eat oily fish twice or more a week. And eat mussels - not regularly enough - but they are a great source of loads of stuff.

louise5754 · 06/02/2023 18:14

Prescription high long term dose of vitamin d. I don't go out much.

I don't understand the vitamin for autism? I'm autistic.

Seashor · 06/02/2023 18:19

vitamin D here too. 2000 of whatever the measurement is, on the recommendation of my consultant.

Bugeyedowl · 06/02/2023 18:43

WellWoman 50 has been a great help to me, in feeling a bit more balanced as I go through peri.

Biotin - game changer for my hair. Took a good few weeks but I've noticed quite a difference in my hair and nails.

What biotin do you use?
