Please can I ask what is possibly a stupid question to the vitamin experts on this thread - is a daily multivitamin enough to deal with eg low iron and low vitamin d? I have started taking one because I feel exhausted all the time, but dunno if I should be more precise?

For low iron no, the usual multivitamins, spatone, eating red meat etc won’t cut it, you need the much higher dose stuff eg ferrous fumerate 322mg (about £2 from the pharmacy). Two every other day on an empty stomach with a high dose vitamin c tablet. Even better is haem/heme iron (the type that’s in meat, much better absorbed, much fewer side effects) but it’s hard to find and expensive. You can’t “eat you way out” of really low iron and the nhs are crap at diagnosing and treating it.

Biotin. It's made no difference whatsoever to my hair, but my nails are definitely stronger, and they break less.

I too take magnesium & vit d - sometimes iron, but was listening to a podcast recently (dr Tim spectre I believe) who dismissed all vitamin supplements as pointless. What do we think???

Not pointless to take supplements for things you are deficient in. Most of the uk population is low in vitamin d most of the year. Low b12 and iron also common. If you’re healthy and eat a
good diet taking a multivitamin for the sake of it is a bit pointless.

I had iron and vitamin D deficiencies identified through blood tests. Felt so much better after taking iron supplements (even though they didn’t really agree my my stomach. Now I take tranexamic acid for my heavy periods so have been able to stop taking the iron. Game changer.

Thanks, but the main reason I wanted to take magnesium was to improve my bladder control so I wouldn't go to the toilet as often as I do. I doubt the gel would help with that!

Does it really help with bladder control? I'm up all through the night and it breaks my sleep so bad. I'm desperate to find something that helps.

High dose vit d but I'm not sure it's making a difference, both my knees still crack up every step
I also have a high dose of iron and folic acid, both on prescription, together they definitely lift my mood and seem to reduce the carpal tunnel pain in my wrist.
What does everyone take for creaky knees, mine sound like they need oiling!

I also occasionally use the magnesium spray from Holland and Barratts, helps with a good night's sleep and no aching legs

I wouldn't be able to tell you I'm afraid, as I had to stop taking them after only 2 tablets. They just weren't agreeing with my stomach!

I was the other way around. Have been on tranexamic acid for years now. But only diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia last January!

Yes Tim says all supplements are pointless. (Surely he doesn’t include vitamin D in that?).

This is based on everyone eating very well, so do you get your 30 different plants and veggies each week? Do you drink zero alcohol, do you cook from scratch?

He is also not a perimenopausal woman who can’t sleep!!

His argument is that if we eat well we should get everything we need from food. I can’t possibly eat enough iron to cope with my heavy periods and running 30 miles a week.
Also farming methods mean that food is less nutrient dense than it was.

Most of the population are deficient in magnesium for example.

By all means have a blood test but I think you’d need to eat very well all the time to not benefit from some supplements.

In ideal world we should get evrything from food we consume, but there is a BIG but.
Everyone have different levels of absorbtion.
Overweight people should take more Vit D than slim ones, as Vit D loves fat (it's stored in the fat tissues)

Some vitamins taken together may interfere with their absorption.

Some vitamis its better to take in the morning some in the evening.

ie Vit D before bed may cause sleep issues,
Biotin before bed may cause vivid dreams
And magnesium is good to split the dose in 2, for better absorption

Vitamin d spray after blood tests showed I was very deficient. I was taking glucosamine for aching joints but it made me feel really unwell, perhaps I need a lower dose .

Yes I agree.

That was his argument- I think it’s far too idealistic (and simplistic). Everyone has different needs and many people need to supplement. I like him but his views on supplements annoy me!

But since it's difficult for people to get enough vitamin D from food alone, everyone (including pregnant and breastfeeding women) should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D during the autumn and winter. from nhs

Vitamin D. Very stressful couple of years and lost hair through alopecia. It thinned all over too. Vitamin D for a year now and bald patches gone and hair thicker too. Also sleep better.
But these could be as my life is generally less stressful now.

Vitamins D and B12
I had/have an underactive thyroid and suffered a great deal from NHS medical gaslighting. They did do various blood tests although got the everything is normal BS, didnt take much research to find out that wasn't strictly correct. Found a private doctor, paid for more tests, got diagnosed and medicated.

Those 2 vitamins definitely help even these days when I function well again. And latest blood tests show im not over medicated which is especially good with the vitamin D as I take 10,000 IU in winter, 5,000 IU in summer as I find it particularly helpful for my hands which dont straighten properly if im not taking enough. I work outside a lot of the time too so have a better chance than many to benefit from the sun.
