If you take vitamin supplements have you noticed a difference in how you feel?

What are the main vitamins to take for peri menopause? I’d like to have more energy and feel less flat

Iris1976 · 05/02/2023 18:55

Started evening primrose oil about 3 years ago as was getting awful PMT,started cos liver Oli 2 years back, also peri now so take vit b12 and multivitamin.

ChaToilLeam · 05/02/2023 19:01

Vit D + K, I was seriously, SERIOUSLY deficient as I found out via a blood test. Energy levels improved and joints not painful and creaky any more.

Fish oil again for joints.

Magnesium to help sleep.

Zinc as and when needed, if I have a cut that is slow to heal.

Funnily enough my iron levels are great! So no need to top up there.

KangarooKenny · 05/02/2023 19:03

For breast pain I’ve taken a good quality Evening Primrose Oil for years. I stopped to see if I could drop it, the pain came back, so I’m back on it.
My sleep in peri is affected so I have a couple of Epsom salt baths a week ( two hands full, soak for 20 mins). I also take magnesium L-Threonate and this helps sleep, and has helped my meno brain.
Ive started Omega3 with high source EPA and DHA, and it is better than cod liver oil for joints.
Vitamin D3 and K2.
B vitamins.

boogiebabies · 05/02/2023 19:05

Magnesium
High potency sub-lingual vitamin d
Methylated B-complex (this really makes me feel great)

harrassedmumto3 · 05/02/2023 19:07

I take Feel multivitamins on a monthly subscription. I'm not sure how much good they're doing, but they can't hurt!
I would like to have more energy but my diet isn't the best and I'm carrying excess weight, so this won't help. Would also like my mood to be more 'lifted' in general (I'm 48).

romany4 · 05/02/2023 19:11

Magnesium. I ran out 4 days ago.. I am starting to ache already and waking up though the night.
Magnesium stops both for me

ThePoshUns · 05/02/2023 19:11

I have Feel multivitamins through the post. My hair is incredible since I started taking it. Energy levels are good. I also take vitamin D to try and combat the effects of Winter.

ComeBackPeterComeBackPaul · 05/02/2023 19:17

Vit D which has raised my levels to within the advised range, Magnesium glycinate for tired legs and good sleep, turmeric for anti inflammatory purposes. They all seem to work for me.

CoffeeRightNow · 05/02/2023 19:18

Vitamin D. When o was low on this a few years ago I felt very unwell and exhausted.

Iron - I get anaemia if I don’t.

Zinc - a very sensible, non-woo colleague told me she stopped getting common colds when she started taking this, so I started taking it in September and haven’t had a cold all winter…

B complex & Magnesium - just started these, so can’t report back yet!

Meredusoleil · 05/02/2023 19:21

Multivitamins every day.
Iron suplements due to anemia.
Vitamin D from November-March.

Tried to take magnesium, but was getting an upset stomach, so stopped it quite quickly.

I am the same, if I stop talking magnesium my joints are so creaky and sore. It was a complete game changer for me, I used to feel 100 before I started taking it!

ILoveYouMoreTheEnd · 05/02/2023 19:27

When I remember I take:
Magnesium
Zinc
Vit D
A vit B complex
A hair and nail with A, C and E in it
I always say I will take them everyday and I really should as I do feel the difference especially with magnesium.

40sNonBlondes · 05/02/2023 19:29

what type and dose of magnesium are poeple taking?

purplerain100 · 05/02/2023 19:30

I too take magnesium & vit d - sometimes iron, but was listening to a podcast recently (dr Tim spectre I believe) who dismissed all vitamin supplements as pointless. What do we think???

Delatron · 05/02/2023 19:33

I think it’s magnesium glycinate for sleep.

I take: vitamin D - had levels tested recently and they were 115 so high! But I keep shaking off illnesses so I think it helps

Ashawhanga really helps with Peri moods.

Always take iron as I run lots and am prone to Anemia.

Some kind of Omega 3 - so krill/flaxseed.

In the supplements I take there is also biotin, iodine, selenium and zinc.

This combo is helping with energy levels and sleep as I can’t take HRT.

Wiglio · 05/02/2023 19:37

Supermarket vitamin D, year round, my ankles were very stiff after periods of inactivity but not since I started taking it.

Delatron · 05/02/2023 19:37

Yes Tim says all supplements are pointless. (Surely he doesn’t include vitamin D in that?).

This is based on everyone eating very well, so do you get your 30 different plants and veggies each week? Do you drink zero alcohol, do you cook from scratch?

He is also not a perimenopausal woman who can’t sleep!!

His argument is that if we eat well we should get everything we need from food. I can’t possibly eat enough iron to cope with my heavy periods and running 30 miles a week.
Also farming methods mean that food is less nutrient dense than it was.

Most of the population are deficient in magnesium for example.

By all means have a blood test but I think you’d need to eat very well all the time to not benefit from some supplements.

Nobody can get enough vitamin D Oct-March.

ForestofD · 05/02/2023 19:39

Vitamin D and B12.

But this thread is a great idea OP, lots of interesting advice/thoughts here.

Welfast · 05/02/2023 19:40

B complex, so much more energy and has taken away my angst

Delatron · 05/02/2023 19:41

wp65 · 05/02/2023 18:21

Please can I ask what is possibly a stupid question to the vitamin experts on this thread - is a daily multivitamin enough to deal with eg low iron and low vitamin d? I have started taking one because I feel exhausted all the time, but dunno if I should be more precise?

If you have low vitamin D you will need more than what is in a multivitamin.

The BetterYou Sprays with vitamin k also are good. I use these and my Vitamin D is high.

Iron I take the Spatone sachets as they are easy on the stomach and have good absorption.

My dad's GP told him that they're pointless, unless you happen to live the life of an athlete!

Lcb123 · 05/02/2023 19:42

Iron made a difference to me

harrassedmumto3 · 05/02/2023 19:41

My dad's GP told him that they're pointless, unless you happen to live the life of an athlete!

They’re not pointless if you’re deficient though.

80% or the population does not have sufficient vitamin D levels. Vitamin D as is actually a hormone so hugely important for many areas of health.

I was actually part of a very interesting study on vitamin D and breast cancer. Outcomes were better for patients with high levels of vitamin D so I’m very careful to make sure I have good levels.

I do think women have different needs to me too. We are prone to low iron beyond heavy periods. I get frustrated with men not understanding a one size fits all policy doesn’t work.

Delatron · 05/02/2023 19:47

Women have different needs to men that was supposed to say. In terms of vitamins and minerals.
