Share with me your favourite basic comfort foods for no reason other than I just ate some crackers with butter and was struck by how delicious it was. I'm thinking say 3-4 ingredients max.

I'll start with:

White toast, salted butter
In similar vein, Jacobs cracker with salted butter
Jacket potato, salted butter
Crumpet, nutella
Toast, butter, baked beans

Hot custard and rusks - the one thing my mother would let me eat whenever I was ill as a child.

Also cheesy scrambled eggs.

And pasta, tomato sauce and melted cheese - my student go to when I was low on money but needed something quick and calorific.

Are you another stokie?? Love oatcakes!!

lmnabc · 02/02/2023 17:38

Pasta or baked beans

ferretface · 02/02/2023 17:38

Ooh yeah another riff on toast - softboiled egg (properly runny yolk) with toasted soldiers. Soldiers must have salty butter on.
(Clearly my heart lies with toast!)

PumpkinPastiez · 02/02/2023 17:53

Cheapest joint of beef you can find. Doesn't matter what kind. Sear it and put into a slow cooker.

Add;

500ml of beef stock
400g of passata
1tablespoon each of; cumin, cayenne pepper, smoked paprika, hot chilli powder.
Garlic purée.
Fry off some onions if you feel like it, but don't worry if not.

Leave on low for minimum 8 hours but if it's brisket put it on the night before. When it's done it'll fall apart, shred it and Serve with chips or rice, tortilla chips, salad, guacamole, sour cream all the good stuff. Works amazingly in a wrap cold for lunch. One 1kg joint of beef done like this will do 2 lunches and 4 dinners. It's so spicy and so warming on a cold winters night but it also works as a side for bbq in summer and the only 'work' it takes is searing the meat.

glasshole · 02/02/2023 17:59

Bacon , chipotle honey and cheese toastie.

Hot chocolate with all the extras.

A fresh waffle and strawberries and Nutella.

A tank special from the kebaby. I think it's a local thing, it's donner meat, tons of garlic butter, sliced onions and mushrooms, mayo and cheese folded in a pizza base.

A roast dinner that somebody else has cooked.

Egg chips and beans with tomato sauce and two bread and butter. Mug of tea.

All of these things bring me joy when I'm sad.

PurpleEmpress · 02/02/2023 18:06

Oatcakes with very ripe brie oozing over the edges.
Crumpets with nutella or marmalade.
Cheese on toast.
Dessert, bag of jelly beans

OvertiredAndUnderwhelmed · 02/02/2023 18:10

Crisp sandwich - any flavour but specifically with cheese spread and prawn cocktail or salted butter and smoky bacon!

Poached egg on a toasted bagel with crispy bacon

Those mini Chicago Town pepperoni pizzas!

Cheap garlic bread baguettes from the supermarket served with any beige type pasta also!

Pasta, butter, garlic, grated cheese

Ooh wow, I’m just lazing about considering an easy dinner. Might have to have this 😋 😋

indignatio · 02/02/2023 18:15

Cream and soft blue cheese melted in. Stir in cooked pasta. So quick easy and delicious. Can add basil and black pepper if you can stretch to 5 ingredients

YourGazeHitsTheSideOfMyFace · 02/02/2023 18:16

Custard, with anything, or on it’s own

Toast, with dippy eggs or a poached egg

Pasta with cheese sauce

Fish finger sandwich

Heinz tomato soup

I’ve dropped in to a depressive episode just now, and so this is all I fancy for now. That and a couple of things my mum makes, although I’m over 50 and have been cooking my own meals for over 30 years.

ConkerBonkers · 02/02/2023 18:18

I grew up on tinned tomatoes and toast in the 80's. I can recommend giving that one a miss! Bleurgh!

Avocado on toast with olive oil and salt
Toast with peanut butter
Wrap stuffed with pesto, chicken, cooked in a press

Thighdentitycrisis · 02/02/2023 18:18

@nonevernotever
you are the first person I met outside my family who eats ‘rice and cheese’ !

I used to make this regularly. I always used brown rice and added sautéed onion

PurBal · 02/02/2023 18:20

Pasta, ketchup and grated cheese.

QuestionableMouse · 02/02/2023 18:22
