I cannot believe that the charges have been dropped.

Anyone remember the audio recording?

He demanded she put her legs up.
“Mason stop, I don’t want to have sex.”
”I don’t give a fuck what you want.”

Charges dropped. I cannot believe it.

Rumour has it, that the 2 of them are now actually engaged. Which does seem very odd.

I agree, they should have made an example of him

The only way to do that would have been to hold an unfair trial. I really don't think that's the road we should be going down.

midsomermurderess · 02/02/2023 15:54

How can a prosecution proceed having lost a key witness and new, and it can only be assumed, legally-relevant, evidence emerging? It’s so juvenile to declare that rape is now legal in England.

Notcoolmum · 02/02/2023 15:11

Just awful. Mason Greenwood. Benjamin Mendy. Ched Evans. All buying themselves out of rape charges. What message does this send to teenage boys?

It sends the message that women are there if you want them, that lack of consent means nothing , and if you get a half decent lawyer, hang on long enough and deny everything the chances are you will get away with it because sometimes CPS don’t want to ruin their conviction rates and raped women don’t want to have their lives ripped apart any more than they have been.

And time and time again this message proves to be right. Even with evidence. I am surprised we haven’t got to the stage as it is in other parts of the world when for a rape conviction to stand you need independent witnesses.

Theluggage15 · 02/02/2023 15:57

I doubt the police are that impressed at having their time wasted. If she’s chosen to get back with him that’s her lookout. Not really sure what you expect to happen.

Mendy and Evans were charged. Mendy found not guilty on 6 counts of rape and will be retried on another 2. Evans was acquitted. Doesn't sound like they bought their way out of anything...
Unless you're saying they nobbled the juries?

PenguinIce · 02/02/2023 16:08

Even if the audio recording was not enough to secure a conviction it should be enough for him to never play football again. I don’t know how any fan could listen to it and then go and watch him play.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 02/02/2023 16:09

God won't someone think about the poor menz.
Victim blaming and "where's the evidence" when it's literally been posted. Incredible. In the true sense of the word.

But a recording is not “evidence” of intent and people aren’t convicted without a trial based on just “evidence” only

its evidence of a terrible, misogynistic personality. It places him there in context. But it it not enough on its own

Honestly I get why so many want change and the conviction rates to improve but we can’t just expect it of this case because we want it to.

DaisyCornflowerBlue · 02/02/2023 16:15

Doesn't mean he's innocent. Only means there's not enough evidence to confidently secure a conviction.

The hope the woman in the recording is getting appropriate support.

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 16:15

@SavoirFlair

So you never formulate your own opinion without a trial

Everyone knows he did it.

Why do we have to pretend otherwise when we know the CJS is a sham anyway?

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 16:16

At this rate we might as well stop prosecuting rape

Stop setting women up to fail. Stop allowing them hope of justice

Abouttimemum · 02/02/2023 16:17

Well the police don’t have any choice. There’s zero chance of any conviction. It’s maddening really, that people put up with such behaviour. And go back for more.

It's very common in abusive relationships for the abuser to "win" their partner back with promises that they've learned their lesson, they've changed, that the whole issue has been the wake-up call they needed and so on. Its part of the cycle of abuse and its why so many women stay or why they return again and again.

who is “everyone”?!

Whatever your personal opinion, it's potentially libellous to say "everyone knows he did it when the charges have been dropped.

@IDontCareMatthew

Did you mean to tag me? I've no idea.

@SavoirFlair

Everyone who isn't a rape apologist I suppose?

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 16:47

@ilovesooty

Oh well.

He can sue me

🤣

knittingaddict · 02/02/2023 16:47

SavoirFlair · 02/02/2023 15:06

Ridiculous.

do you just want every man who is accused, convicted? Every single one regardless of the evidence?

FGS. This site.

No danger of that happening. Have you seen the conviction rates for rape and sexual assault? It's a disgrace.

knittingaddict · 02/02/2023 16:51

MN isn't a court of law. We are allowed opinions. I know someone who was raped and they didn't get justice either. It's awful what women have to endure.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 02/02/2023 16:54

I wonder how long the ‘relationship’ lasts now he has his end game of a clean record🙁

Men like him can do say anything to wriggle out of taking accountability for their actions, including declarations of love and of having learned their lesson. Poor woman. My sympathies lie with her and her only.

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 16:55

If my friend, sister, aunties cousins friends twice removed told me they were assaulted and /or raped or suffered any kind of dv, I wouldn't say, sorry but they haven't been convicted so I can't possibly believe you. No. Sorry. Unless he's been found guilty in a court of law then you'll have to stop talking about it.

Want to post on the relationship board about your abusive oh?

Get advice on how to leave? Sorry, no you cant unless they've been convicted.

Wouldn't be fair to the poor souls

Im actually surprised women's aid and refuge haven't been shut down for libel.

🙄

mcjudge · 02/02/2023 14:50

Does that mean he is innocent and will go back to football?

No, it means she's been persuaded to drop the charges.

There's plenty of evidence but without her testimony, the CPS won't pursue it.

He is still rapist scum.

IDontCareMatthew · 02/02/2023 16:58

Lots of weird assumptions on this thread
