I cannot believe that the charges have been dropped.

Anyone remember the audio recording?

He demanded she put her legs up.
“Mason stop, I don’t want to have sex.”
”I don’t give a fuck what you want.”

Charges dropped. I cannot believe it.

@girlfriend44

Because he knew he would get away with it and doesn't give a fuck I'd imagine?

Because men like him view women as something they're entitled to use and abuse? Because when you're that up your own arse and entitled you think you can do what you like?

@Winniethepoohandtiggertoo

There is evidence? There's a recording

IDontCareMatthew · 02/02/2023 15:08

There's also more evidence....which has been part of the reason charges are dropped

IntentionalError · 02/02/2023 15:08

IDontCareMatthew · 02/02/2023 15:04

Anyway, the ex girlfriend has now gone back to following him on social media. And vice versa...

There have been rumours about them being back in contact for months. It’s pretty clear what has happened here. For whatever reason, she has decided she doesn’t want him to be prosecuted and without her co-operation the CPS do not have a case against Greenwood.

TheFairyCaravan · 02/02/2023 15:11

“A CPS spokesperson said: 'We have a duty to keep cases under continuous review.

'In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. In these circumstances, we are under a duty to stop the case.

'We have explained our decision to all parties.”

We’ll never know the full story but it sends out a terrible message to victims yet again.

Catspyjamas17 · 02/02/2023 15:11

I imagine she doesn't want to be dragged through court and the press. I don't blame her, but Man Utd can't have him back playing.

Notcoolmum · 02/02/2023 15:11

Just awful. Mason Greenwood. Benjamin Mendy. Ched Evans. All buying themselves out of rape charges. What message does this send to teenage boys?

Petronus · 02/02/2023 15:14

SavoirFlair · 02/02/2023 15:06

Ridiculous.

do you just want every man who is accused, convicted? Every single one regardless of the evidence?

FGS. This site.

Get a grip, if you look at the conviction rates this is hardly where we are heading.

Notcoolmum · 02/02/2023 15:17

And @Petronus that's those that actually get reported. :(

TeapotCollection · 02/02/2023 15:23

You need a Reddit account to listen to that recording

SweetSenorita · 02/02/2023 15:24

Winniethepoohandtiggertoo · 02/02/2023 14:40

But surely you understand there has to be a trial and evidence? And no evidence means no trial? Otherwise what system should we have in place?

Exactly this.

Yes, rape prosecutions and convictions are abysmally low 😪 I doubt many of us would disagree. But without sufficient evidence, there's no chance of a conviction. That's the law in a civilised society.

Lockheart · 02/02/2023 15:24

The risk is that if the trial goes ahead without a key witness then the trial could be jeopardised and the result could be said to be unfair or prejudiced.

This is not taking into account the apparent new evidence - no idea what it might be - which may mean there is no realistic prospect of any conviction in any case.

It's an emotive topic but we can't hold potentially unfair and / or unrigorous trials for the sake of it. That way lies a very dark path.

Personally I think he's guilty, but we have no other system of law by which to convict him of anything.

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 15:25

Some convictions beyond the pathetic 2 % would be nice huh?

Or is this another part of life where poor rapists feelings are put first?

AdamRyan · 02/02/2023 15:27

In domestic violence cases men can be prosecuted even if the victim withdraws their statement. Because people often go back to their abuser.

I wish that had happened here

drpet49 · 02/02/2023 15:28

Winniethepoohandtiggertoo · 02/02/2023 15:01

Oh come on with no evidence how do you expect a trial to happen? Or do you think trials aren’t needed? Can anyone actually answer that?

This

Crazykatie · 02/02/2023 15:30

Siameasy · 02/02/2023 15:04

Of course it’ll be dropped if the complainant withdraws. She is presumably the only witness.
Thank God the law is reason free from passion.

Not necessarily, if his mates were around and expecting a piece of the action, they get away with far too much.

tiger2691 · 02/02/2023 15:34

Do we really know for sure, that it was actually him on that recording?

Botw1 · 02/02/2023 15:35

Ffs

Icannotbelieveitatall · 02/02/2023 15:37

It’s been dropped as realistic chance of conviction is not there. The case would have been prejudiced by the social media posts in the first place. It doesn’t mean he’s innocent. It doesn’t mean he’s guilty (though the recording suggests otherwise) but it doesn’t mean he’s innocent.

He will be celebrated again by fans and make a fortune.

If Harriet has chosen to drop the charges that's up to her, he is in an incredibly powerful position compared to her.
If Man utd choose to take him back despite the photographic and audio evidence then that is abhorrent however. Their actions now matter.

TokyoSushi · 02/02/2023 15:40

He'll play again, in a couple of years all of this will be forgotten and he'll go on to live a fabulous life.

Make of that what you will.

unclebuck · 02/02/2023 15:44

They are in a relationship again and she has withdrawn the charges

I agree, they should have made an example of him

mcjudge · 02/02/2023 14:50

Does that mean he is innocent and will go back to football?

No, just because he hasn’t been charged doesn’t mean he is innocent.
