Me and my daughter was awoken to a LOUD condescending beeping noise. Like duh duh duh duh duh da da da da if that makes sense 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve checked all the smoke alarms, carbon dioxide detector things and all good. The kids are older now so they don’t have any musical toys. I literally have no explanation. AIBU to move out out 😂🤷🏻‍♀️

in all seriousness has anyone else ever had this?…been living here 2 years this august and hasn’t happened at all before now

Is it wrong that I misinterpreted the OP's (obvious) autocarrot as "crescendoing"? I'm quite disappointed that it's actually as mundane as "descending".

I thought so too!

Out of interest did you spend several years of your childhood learning a musical instrument 🤣

I know it’s a typo but I love the idea of a smoke alarm running out of batteries in a condescending manner.

Yes, this is adorable. Sort of “Meep, meep, have you really not got around to replacing my batteries yet? Meep, meep’ etc.

SuckItNietzsche · 02/02/2023 09:17

Our mysterious beep turned out to be the dishwasher, which had finished and popped open as usual but hadn't drained properly. Took us a while to figure out where it was coming from, we must have weird acoustics as even with both of us standing in the kitchen we couldn't pinpoint it.

Treaclemine · 02/02/2023 09:19

Thank you for reminding me that I have, as well as checking with my credit card company why they have blocked said card, to locate and deal with strange beeping sound near the living room TV. Someone thought I was going to deal with it last night about 3 am. In his dreams. I think it's something he brought in from a walk because it had a flashing light.

Hedgehog6 · 02/02/2023 09:22

Do you have teenagers? ‘duh, duh, duh’ is just the kind of condescending noise my teenager makes

rainbowstardrops · 02/02/2023 09:22

Could it have been a large lorry or something reversing outside?

pam290358 · 02/02/2023 09:23

Ponoka7 · 02/02/2023 06:54

Was it definitely inside and not a vehicle reversing outside?

That was my first thought. The OP said the noise got gradually louder so could have been a vehicle reversing and the sound got louder as it got near the house. Seems logical - some lorries have really loud reverse warnings.

SuperHandss · 02/02/2023 09:25

Could it be your burglar alarm? Our inside unit started beeping when the builders unplugged it & the battery was running low.

Pressure alarm inside your gas boiler?

Everyone who is getting so puzzled about 'condescending' – it's clearly effing autocorrect on a mistype of 'crescendoing'. Happens all the time.

All the time?! How often are you typing out 'crescendoing'?

If your house is terraced or semi detached, it will have been something in your next door neighbour’s house.

Hoity Toity smoke alarms.

They don't any more, they're moving to broadband alarms.

They sound bloody odd, but they don't sound like a beep.

amatsip · 02/02/2023 09:43

Smart meter accidentally unplugged makes a beep till it dies.

SecondRow · 02/02/2023 09:55

While we're all being crescendo-ing on this thread it simply has to be said that crescendo-ing is redundant (or do I mean superfluous?) since the Italian "-endo" suffix means the same as "-ing" in English Wink

Is your landline off the hook?

HellyR · 02/02/2023 10:08

I assumed OP meant descending in pitch - I did think of the Nokia 'kick' ringtone - anything like this @candycrush789 ?

purplecorkheart · 02/02/2023 10:09

Blocked filter in the dishwasher or washing machine? My washing machine makes an awful noise when it thinks its filter is blocked.

Teapotkitten · 02/02/2023 10:09

I once heard sirens going crazy outside, like there was a movie-style police chase going through our village. After a few minutes I stepped into the back garden to listen because it didn't make any sense... Then I spotted what it was - my DS had left a toy police van out in the rain and it's siren sound was going off constantly!

daemonologie · 02/02/2023 10:10

Tinnitus

spiderlight · 02/02/2023 10:12

We had this a few months back - something beeping every ten minutes or so, but it wasn't our smoke alarms (which are hardwired). It drove us mad for days until we eventually found an ancient and long-forgotten smoke alarm in the very back of a kitchen cupboard telling us its battery had gone.

orangegato · 02/02/2023 10:33

My alarm did this. The box was in the kitchen but wired through the loft and noise was coming from the loft. Took WEEKS to figure out wtf it was. Cut the power to it, bingo, silence.

WinnieFosterReads · 02/02/2023 10:35

Did you have a power cut during the night? We had one last week - it didn't reset anything else but the carbon monoxide detector made an odd beeping noise we had never heard before ... until it reset. We were wandering round the house trying to work out what it was.

TheNoonBell · 02/02/2023 10:56

Sounds like the battery warning on a home alarm system.
