Happy meals should be plain

AIBU to think happy meals should not come with onions, mustard and pickle as standard? Whose kid is eating these? I've taken many a kid to mcd's and they always ask for it plain, sometimes with ketchup. I can't fathom why they don't make them plain with the option to add the extras. AIBU to think kids meals should be plain to avoid mistakes and waste when I have to take it back EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

(Light hearted of course but I don't get it)

I have 2 dgs, the eldest always has a plain burger as he is a picky bugger and hates all sauces, including gravy (which isn't an issue at McDs), heaves if he has onion and flatly refuses to even contemplate pickles. The youngest has a cheeseburger with a ketchup to dip it in, extra onions and I usually give him my pickles - I don't think he realises that there is mustard on them because he doesn't like it apparantly but has been eating it without complaint for years.

Sarahcoggles · 01/02/2023 22:47

My kids hate all the extra stuff too OP.

Whatifthecathatesthebaby · 01/02/2023 22:47

My LO prefers the toppings to the burger, if we customise, its to take out the meat.

DragonsFurry · 01/02/2023 22:50

Oh I don’t know but every time I order a happy meal they seem to leave out the friggin fruit shoot 🙄🙄🙄

Mcdonalds is so expensive now, it’s just not worth it in terms of quality and service. You used to be able to claim back for missing items, now they just tell you to speak to the branch but they never answer the phone.

I’d rather save the money and put it towards a decent curry or something.

DecommissionedVag · 01/02/2023 22:54

My dd who's 4 eats all the additions. She's a savage though.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 01/02/2023 22:54

Yes of course the menu should be completely changed to suit the children you are taking to McDonalds. How unreasonable of them.

Teridavis · 01/02/2023 22:36

Sounds like you are a fussy eater and that trait has passed on down to your kids. I have never heard of any children complaining about a McDonald’s before?

There's hardly anything I don't eat, love oysters, most other pickles, most other condiments. Definitely not that. My kids aren't overly fussy in general either

Hobbitfeet32 · 01/02/2023 22:58

why do we attach labels such as ‘adventurous’ to foods? What makes something adventurous and other foods not? I’m sure this is why so many children are fussy eaters. Adults projecting their own thoughts about foods so kids pick up on them and then won’t try things.

Needmorelego · 01/02/2023 22:59

My daughter is another one who asks for extra gherkins, onions and salad.
She never eats the bun though. I often eat her bun with some fries in as a chip butty (why do they not do a McButty?🤣). When she was younger she would sometimes lick the onion off the bun before handing it too me - yeah ewww.
The most important thing about Happy Meals is as someone upthread said - bring back the proper toys. They're rubbish now (and they never ever have the alternative book).

My DS wouldn't eat pickle but LOVED both mustard and onions.

DD, even now, won't eat anything with flavour. EVERYTHING has to be plain (she's 36).

Some kids like this stuff, some don't.

ElizabethBest · 01/02/2023 23:02

Mine loves onions, mustard, gherkins, relish..,,. But won’t touch a burger. Confused

Needmorelego · 01/02/2023 23:03

@yukkamumma I had a children's meal at Burger King once. The burger there was plain. Was very disappointed. And even worse to add tomato sauce they have those stupid sachets which are a pain to open.

MrsAvocet · 01/02/2023 23:05

Well you could say the same for adults couldn't you? I know loads of adults who don't like the gherkins or raw onion etc.
But in reality it takes about 10 seconds to click the button to remove them so it's hardly an issue. I really like that you can order plain stuff automatically now so I no longer have to go through repeatedly explaining that yes, I really do just want the bread and the burger. No, not even ketchup thanks. 🤮 It used to feel like it was the first time anyone had ever asked for that every single time I went in, and I frequently got the wrong thing in the end. But they seem to be able to get it right now ordering is automated. Still seems to be a problem at the Drive Thru though, so I just park and go in to use the screens. I'd say that on the whole McDonalds is now one of the easiest places to order plain food.

Skinnermarink · 01/02/2023 21:22

No because you can customise to make them so! I used to like all the gherkin and onion stuff when I was little anyway.

They should bring back the proper toys though, they used to be sooo much better.

I liked all the stuff on them as well as a kid(still do lol) my kids like them too. Tbh there was only a few ppl i knew as kids who didn’t like it

SeenYourArse · 01/02/2023 23:09

Both my kids like the burgers with everything on as they come, and my eldest has food issues! They have always eaten them like this 🤷‍♀️

Readinstead · 01/02/2023 23:10

Forgot to add earlier that both dgs don't really like fries (or chips) but half the time the fries are still added to the happy meal - sometimes in addition to the ordered carrot/fruit bag sometimes instead of them.

mondaytosunday · 01/02/2023 23:12

My kids loved them as they came. But then they were never had a 'plain food' phase. Always enjoyed vegetables, happy to try new foods.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/02/2023 23:13

I thought happy meals were plain as standard?

Needmorelego · 01/02/2023 23:16

@Readinstead when my daughter was much younger she didn't like the fries so we would often ask for the carrot bag instead. 9 times out of 10 they wouldn't have them. You could almost see the panic in the staff members face "oh crap... someone wants the carrots..no one ever wants the carrots" 🤣
We used to ask for the fruit bag instead.
Quite frequently though they would put the fries in anyway (probably on autopilot) so free fries - yay.

Thatboymum · 01/02/2023 23:26

I don’t know what McDonald’s you eat at but at mine there is deffo a plain cheeseburger meal option online in store and just eat etc, if we do drive thru they ask if we want one plain or filled and plain is the go to

Motelschmotel · 01/02/2023 23:26

Omg on which planet are onions, pickles (cucumber literally pickled in vinegar and sugar!) and sweet mustard “adventurous”? Or strong flavours 🤣 McDonalds has spent hundreds of thousands researching what would be most appealing to children, and apparently the results are in!!

I think you and your kin are in a small minority on this one, OP!

My kids are eating them, like most. Because your kid is basic, we're all supposed to feed out kids dry, unsauced shite?

Just customise your own food on the screen, don't try to inflict your basic blandness on the rest of us!

My kid. My kid is eating it. As do their friends.

if you want it plain, ask for it that way.

RGinaPhalange · 01/02/2023 23:42

My kids wouldn’t like a plain burger.

They don’t like the pickles but I pinch those anyway.

Although what annoys me is that for some reason there are no veggie options in the kids’ meals. Why isn’t there a little McPlant for Happy Meals? To be fair the real McPlant is so tiny they couldn’t make a smaller one for kids!

They do the veggie stick things don’t they?
