Happy meals should be plain

yukkamumma · 01/02/2023 21:20

AIBU to think happy meals should not come with onions, mustard and pickle as standard? Whose kid is eating these? I've taken many a kid to mcd's and they always ask for it plain, sometimes with ketchup. I can't fathom why they don't make them plain with the option to add the extras. AIBU to think kids meals should be plain to avoid mistakes and waste when I have to take it back EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

(Light hearted of course but I don't get it)

Not every child dislikes pickles

StopGo · 04/02/2023 09:06

You can buy jars of sliced dill pickles (McD's gherkins) in Polski Skleps and even in Sainsbury's. My children love them.

Oh and I NEVER give our dog onions.

She does have a point though, at 2 my son would wolf down a curry, stir fries, casseroles, all veg especially new ones... It gradually does seem to diminish for most kids I know and they hit super fussy phases. My almost 2 yr old will try anything on my plate and eat whole portions of everything, however I now know not to be smug 😂

I'd have thought most children would continue to like the foods typical for their family/culture that are served up regularly, with only a few having diets restricted beyond the norm for their family/culture? DS liked dark chocolate as a two year old then went off of it (loves after eights and bendicks bittermints but not plain 85%). Though, I wonder if it was the only chocolate ever offered then he might have grown to like it again. He has always loved strong flavours otherwise, asking for lemon out of drinks, always ordering a vindaloo etc.

We don't eat custard and jellies but I know he likes them and all the kids at nursery do too. You should see what 80s American kids ate!

My other biggest ick is canned tuna so I'm happy he gets that sometimes at nursery. (Same idea as let them do the messiest play there!)

Other than that, I'm trying my best to expose him to bitter things, textures, mustard, greens, and things I know could be a challenge. So kale in Mac and cheese, mushrooms on pizza now so it's normal.

Of course he can get picky later. He's his own person but whatever I can do to lay that groundwork now. I'm not smug about it, it's just the thing we are doing and so far so good.

We don’t really do McD’s (we tend to do five guys instead). Mine would almost certainly eat the burger as it comes. Maybe the five guys system is better as you choose your toppings. One has ketchup, sliced tomato and lettuce, the other has gherkins and mayo. I think the older one would probably like American mustard, it’s not hot.

pavillion1 · 04/02/2023 10:22

80s baby here , can't remember opting to take bits out, the combination was what made it a macdonalds .. We were no way near as mollycoddled back then .

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2023 10:23

No, our grandson has loved strong flavours since he started solids. Just tell them you want plain, it’s not difficult.

Blablablablaba · 04/02/2023 10:29

They do make up lots of plain burgers for this very reason though. So I usually have to wait longer if I order something customised u won't for a plain burger.

My kids will eat the onions but not the pickle or mustard. I agree though that most kids either want plain or with ketchup.

Soubriquet · 04/02/2023 10:34

My dd as a toddler loved spicy foods. She toddled up to my jalfrezi curry with extra hot curry powder and scoffed a few pieces.

I was shocked as I thought it would be too hot for her.

Now though, she complains if things are spicy.

You sound Anoying

Maryquitecontrary55 · 04/02/2023 10:42

I used to love pickles when I was a kid. Why change it just for a few picky eaters?

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 04/02/2023 11:12

I want to eat a McDonald's gherkin more than anything right now.

Damn you, OP!

My kids hate plain food!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/02/2023 11:36

Get the app. It's been a recent revelation. You can customise things without hopefully prodding away at their self-service screens while a queue builds. Order while away from store, then press that you are there and bingo a few minutes later your food is ready. Also gives you easy access to promotions and points towards free food,

McDonalds has always allowed you to customise your burgers.

Crabwoman · 04/02/2023 11:43

My kids like all the gherkins/onions and stuff.

AlwaysCountYourPennies · 04/02/2023 11:52

My kids have always eaten it with no issue, they love the pickle!

I don't get the whole concept of "kids' food " though, mine always had the same as us (within reason) from toddlers.

TheBigWangTheory · 04/02/2023 12:01

Imagine being so basic that you think most people eat a dry bun with a slice of meat, no sauce, no flavour...and then trying to convince people you're a dietician! Classic.

Greengagesnfennel · 04/02/2023 12:18

Yabu. LOVED them as a kid and the pickle and sauces were the bit that made.it special!

tornadoinsideoutfig · 04/02/2023 12:45

Tbf they are pretty bland even with the usual additions. I think that is why DS never liked the burgers when he was younger, preferring nuggets and sweet and sour sauce or they did a chicken snack wrap (not in a happy meal) where he could add hot sauce. He likes burgers now they are proper adult ones with all the extras.

The burgers in the kids happy meals (hamburger, cheeseburger) are the same ones on the main menu.

I know they are also available not in a meal but I find them to be bland and not something either DS or I would choose. He would have liked something with a bit more flavour when he was younger.

StressedToTheMaxxx · 04/02/2023 13:05

It's the thousands of plastic crap toys that come with them then are binned after 10 minutes that annoys me about happy meals! And yes, I know I sound like a killjoy lol.

SnackSizeRaisin · 04/02/2023 13:10

The burgers are tasteless and grim without the toppings. The toppings are in any case fairly sweet and bland - not exactly strong flavours. I don't see why the default should be without. If your kids don't like the food eat somewhere else, or ask them to leave them off.
