Happy meals should be plain

AIBU to think happy meals should not come with onions, mustard and pickle as standard? Whose kid is eating these? I've taken many a kid to mcd's and they always ask for it plain, sometimes with ketchup. I can't fathom why they don't make them plain with the option to add the extras. AIBU to think kids meals should be plain to avoid mistakes and waste when I have to take it back EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

(Light hearted of course but I don't get it)

@StressedToTheMaxxx McDonalds have stopped doing plastic toys. They do these pointless cardboard things now that literally do get thrown away within minutes unlike the plastic toys - some of which we have had (and been played with) for a decade.

That gherkin was the prize to me and my siblings. If someone ever offered their gherkin it was a great day.

Needmorelego · 04/02/2023 13:45

@StressedToTheMaxxx infact I kept the McDonalds mini Beanie Babies from circa 1998 and passed them on to my daughter (who still has them). Those aren't plastic obviously but shows not all Happy Meal toys are chucked away.

Toddlerteaplease · 04/02/2023 13:50

My mum has a plain filet o fish. Nothing in it except for the fish. And no salt on her chips. I don't know why she bothers!

NameChange30 · 04/02/2023 13:53

You can literally order a happy meal with a plain hamburger (or plain cheeseburger), you don't have to customise it at all. It's an option on the self-service kiosks and in the app, or if ordering at a drive thru just ask for plain. It's not rocket science!

NameChange30 · 04/02/2023 13:55

Plain options clearly available to select (in the app)

@Needmorelego they still do TY soft toys sometimes, my daughter has collected loads :)

Needmorelego · 04/02/2023 20:47

@Sparkleshine21 yes I got a few of the christmasy ones. I hung them on my christmas tree 🙂

GlasgowGal82 · 04/02/2023 21:05

My kid is the pickiest eater ever and he eats McDonalds burgers as they come. They are pretty disgusting and tasteless without the topping to I think YABU.

Oh really? I'm glad to hear it! My wee one got a soft toy over Christmas in her first ever happy meal, one of those little elves, she still takes it to bed with her lol. She seems to cherish the cheapest rubbish over the toys that I've spent a fortune on! But yes, definitely good to hear they've cut out the plastic.

No, it’s really not.

The toys now are mostly cardboard shite. The plastic really needs bringing back.

who had a McDonald’s birthday party? They were the best.

90% of parties were McDonalds' parties when I was a kid in the '90s. I loved them. Getting to be the chosen one and visit the kitchen seemed like such a treat.

I have vague memories of being in a McDonald's kitchen as a child and could never figure out why. This must be why lol

Visited the golden arches today (Chippenham)
We couldn't add extra pickles to the happy meal cheeseburger! Lettuce was the only extra option. Sad times ...

MaybeSmaller · 05/02/2023 14:19

No because you can ask for it plain if you want that. The burger is intended to be eaten with the stuff on it (that's the "recipe" if you like) which is why it comes as standard.

Who are all these kids who are asking for plain burgers though? When I was a child I loved the taste of the pickles and condiments and cheese on McDs burgers, it made a change from the grim plain frozen burgers I used to get at home.

You could have added anything you wanted at the counter, rather than at the screen.

Ponderingwindow · 05/02/2023 15:30

The default is so benign. It never occurred to me kids would want a McDonald’s cheeseburger ordered differently.

mine wont eat beef, but the condiments aren’t an issue.

I have to order them modified because of allergies, I find if I do it in the app, the order will be correct. It’s when I order in-person that I run into trouble.

I think you can add extra on the screen if just buying a cheeseburger so I don't know why not if it's a meal.

Because thats the way the ordering system is set up!

I'm saying it's odd to set it up that way. Why not allow extras just because it's a meal?

TheBigWangTheory · 05/02/2023 16:16

I would have thought it was obvious, but ok. It's about profits.

A full price burger is different to a burger in a meal. When you pay the full amount, you can customise more, when you save money as a meal deal you can customise less.

For example if you pay 7 quid or whatever for an EVM, you can customise your burger quite a bit, but if you pay 4.50 for the same thing as a mobile deal from the app, the customising is reduced.
However if you go to the counter it's not restricted like it os on the screens,. so you can customise a lot more.

tornadoinsideoutfig · 05/02/2023 16:28

No, that wasn't obvious to me. You can customise burgers in adult meals the same as just the burger on it's own. You can add lettuce and cucumber to a cheeseburger happy meal too, but not extra pickle or onions.

Dibbydoos · 28/03/2023 08:18

Can't believe this has you riled OP!

Just take the gherkin off.

BTW picked food is incredibly good for your digestive system. Try to get the kids to eat it or just take it off.
