Happy meals should be plain

AIBU to think happy meals should not come with onions, mustard and pickle as standard? Whose kid is eating these? I've taken many a kid to mcd's and they always ask for it plain, sometimes with ketchup. I can't fathom why they don't make them plain with the option to add the extras. AIBU to think kids meals should be plain to avoid mistakes and waste when I have to take it back EVERY. FUCKING. TIME.

(Light hearted of course but I don't get it)

Nope, lol, not pulling your leg. It's more the fact that onions, mustard and gherkins are all quite strong flavours and not ones I'd deem attractive.

No stronger than ketchup or BBQ sauce which kids seem to love 🤷🏻‍♀️

[possibly outing] DS(5) customises his to add extra lettuce!

What!!!!!!!!

BeyondReleaseTheKraken · 01/02/2023 22:13

Having worked there many many moons ago - the majority of children eat the burgers as they come.

Thinking of it, plain burgers probably sell in a similar proportion for adults, to those children who have them

R0ckets · 01/02/2023 22:13

I'm not sure why you'd think I'd make it up 🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm not saying you're making it up but just wondering if your selecting it properly. It's not unheard of for them to make mistakes but if it happens most times then it's either you have a shit Mcdonalds and the staff are useless or there might be some user error.

What!!!!!!!!
😂

yukkamumma · 01/02/2023 22:15

@Getamoveon36 my kids are on the 50th percentile for weight and both very athletic. They have a healthy lifestyle and diet, I have no issue with them enjoying a dirty dinner

I usually go through the drive thru, might be business or lost in translation

The pickle, mustard and onions are what makes Hamburgers so tasty! Never known a kid not to eat Hamburgers just the way they are. My daughter loves pickles and mustard.

Goodyetalso · 01/02/2023 22:19

I loved the mustard, onions and gherkins when I was little (still do). If your child is particularly fussy about food you can ask for it to come plain but I’m glad that they don’t pander to the stereotype of kids as picky eaters because it gives them the opportunity to try it before deciding that they don’t like it. And often they do like it.

It sounds like you don't make it clear enough when ordering then to be honest. Maybe if they only want plain burgers you'd be better ordering them nuggets, fish fingers or veggie fingers to avoid the issue altogether.

OchreDandelion · 01/02/2023 22:20

I worked in McDonalds for years when at university. I do not recall a single child ever asking for their Happy Meal burger to be plain.

Roundabout78 · 01/02/2023 22:20

My kids always ate it. I never ordered plain, therefore it would have never occurred to them to ask for it without. Never had picky kids! My eldest is a gherkin fiend now and asks for extra 🤢

IggityZiggity · 01/02/2023 22:22

It would be so dry plain.

Kanaloa · 01/02/2023 22:23

Tbf the McDonald’s near me regularly gets things wrong. It’s a habit in my family to stop right outside the drive thru and rummage through the bag to ensure we have the correct things!

WiddlinDiddlin · 01/02/2023 22:26

This is a 'your local McDonalds is crap' issue rather than a McDonalds in general issue.

Mine are great at all sorts of weird substitutions, whether drive thru or eating in, though they cannot make a hot chocolate and almost never have milkshakes.

The one down the road a bit is absolutely awful and they undercook their fries.

Noodledoodledoo · 01/02/2023 22:29

There is definitely a plain cheeseburger/hamburger option to order on the app. I have to add lettuce for one and tomato ketchup for the other! Easier to add than take all the bits out!

My issue (minor) isI order one without fries, they don't seem to get this and we end up with fries - I normally luck out but when I am trying to be good and don't order any for me knowing I will get some, they stick to my order!

Reebokclassics · 01/02/2023 22:30

I was not an adventurous child, beige food all the way! I did however love the mustard onion and pickle on the mcds burger. It’s a classic. Also, why would you insist on making every kids food in the world as bland as possible? It’s different flavours they need introducing to.

Florenz · 01/02/2023 22:04

Happy Meals should be banned as should any junk food specifically aimed at children.

Yessssssssssss!!! Wooohooooo!! Grin

I only opened this thread to check out the pious finger wagging and was shocked as I scrolled through, that I couldn't see any Shock

Thank God for you @Florenz . You've made me feel all nostalgic for yesteryear, when the OP would've been typed to death for even hinting her children didn't eat mung bean and chickpea salad at all times.

OP, 2 out of 3 of mine couldn't stand the gherkins. The one who loved them is 20 now and his older brothers still dig there's out for him 😂

1stWorldProblems · 01/02/2023 22:32

If you want it plain (or complica) then I'd order on the app & collect via the drive thru. Customising at the drive thru has always been a perilous business - see Lethal Weapon 2.

@Panda89 - via the app or the touch screens you can have extras as well as remove items. All 4 of us have extra pickles. You can even add pickles to items that don't normally have them - a chicken burger is greatly improved when you swap the lettuce for pickles.

DD1 used to order a Happy Meal of fish fingers, milk & carrot sticks as toddler but moved to nugget / burger, fries & coke options by her teens.

Ridingfree · 01/02/2023 22:33

My kid eats it all, in fact specifically asks for the onion mustard and gherkin

Teridavis · 01/02/2023 22:36

Sounds like you are a fussy eater and that trait has passed on down to your kids. I have never heard of any children complaining about a McDonald’s before?

Suzi888 · 01/02/2023 22:38

Just ask for it plain.

Confusednewmum1 · 01/02/2023 22:39

Mines has a yellow burger which has everything except the fucking burger!! Slice of plastic cheese, all the sauce ect but no patty.

Try explaining that to another mum when she’s got you kid going through the drive through who is demanding a ….. yellow burger

Zwicky · 01/02/2023 22:42

Surely there can’t be many people who choose a burger with no sauce. The default has to be the whole thing or they would have to custom make the vast majority for everyone else. If they always get it wrong then surely it’s better to get it wrong occasionally rather than nearly every single time someone orders a burger.
