Vulva owners?!

Tallulah28 · 01/02/2023 18:16

Just came across this (no pun intended!) on Insta. Can someone explain to me how this company can use the “by mums for
mums” advertising ploy yet then go on to reduce us to “vulva owners”?

Vulva owners?!
Vulva owners?!

Anyhoo as a finger owner AND a vulva owner, I can do without this product!

FACupcake · 02/02/2023 08:56

Boo! Fuck off, Smilemakers.

Yep. As someone commented earlier, however, applying their device to my vulva rather than my clitoris is going to end in disappointment.

YesitsBess · 02/02/2023 09:00

Everything else aside, a vibratory for new "mummas"?!?!

I know everyone is different, but after whelping what felt like a bloody bowling ball and essentially crashing the Volvo (happily not a write-off as they're everso sturdy) this purchase would be the ninety billionth thing on my list. If it crossed my mind at all.

This has never struck me as a gap in the market, so to speak.

YesitsBess · 02/02/2023 09:02

Vibratory? Come on autocorrect...

"Sorry darling I couldn't hear you, I was locked in the vibratory" 😁

I've got a second hand 55 year old vulva available? Well used but runs fine.
Roomy. Very roomy. No longer needed.

Sorry @gettingolderbutcooler , the market's a bit flooded

Boo! Fuck off, Smilemakers.

This thread is making me smile so there is that. The whole thing sounds like a massive piss take, I know it isn't but seriously. D&I: inclusive of the supposed needs and sensitivities of everyone apart from women, mothers, grandmothers etc. Plus ça change.

StarlightLady · 02/02/2023 09:10

I am in a minority here. I might have a vulva, but l haven’t forgotten how to have a laugh.

Feminism has important issues to address and a play on words is not one of them.

If you prefer “women” in this context, then you are saying anyone with a vulva (even a surgically constructed one) who could benefit from this product is a woman.

Therefore, you are stating that trans women are women.

”vulva owner” enables the terms “women” and “trans women” to co-exist within the subset “vulva owners”.

Some mental gymnastics going on there.

When one talks about women the vast majority of people are thinking about women, not men who say they are women. It's obvious they are targeting women. Bloody obvious.

If other demographics (men) want to use the product, that's their choice but they are not the targets.

They also seem to have a very dim of mothers. I think it was FOJN who said they are going to be shocked at the response on this thread. I'll add bewildered to that. They clearly don't know the MN users. must have got mixed up with somewhere else 😉

To not about a play on words, it’s the continuous push not to use the word woman unless it includes deluded males, otherwise we’re referred to by what’s between our legs, or some other “inclusive” language like Uterus Carrier.

ThreeFeetTall · 02/02/2023 09:15

Why did they choose 'vulva owners' and not 'clitoris owners'.

(I'm trying to think of a car typo but can't quite make it work. Renault Clit?)

Ahh, the mistake you’re making is thinking they can make a vulva, they can’t. They can make something that looks a bit like one.

YesitsBess · 02/02/2023 09:19

I clicked on the actual MN ad and found this absolute Glass Onion gem... Activations? My inner Benoit Blanc is seething.

"We knew from previous activations with our community that sex and motherhood is a deeply-rooted taboo. The lack of conversation and resources on the topic is leaving women and people with wombs feeling side-lined as sexual beings. At Smile Makers, we have been tackling taboos around female sexuality for over 10 years and that was obviously an important one to remove.”

It also looks like one of Shreks' ears.

DonatellaBella · 02/02/2023 09:27

derelicte · 02/02/2023 06:59

This has probably been posted already, but is there any reason not to say "for women and trans men"? That would seem the most straightforward and inclusive wording!

But that excludes the special non binary volvo owners. This is where we've got to 🤦‍♀️

DevilinaCardigan · 02/02/2023 09:36

To quote the magnificent JKR “I'm sure there used to be a word for those people.
Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?”

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 02/02/2023 09:37

Lilavanblue · 02/02/2023 08:45

In this particular ad they’re specifically mentioning women who have recently given birth though - so that would exclude „surgically constructed vulvas“ anyway. If you want to include those, then why target biological mothers?

They widen the scope from mothers when somebody asks about those who are not mothers. It’s only then that the scope embraces a wider subset.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 02/02/2023 09:40

Naunet · 02/02/2023 09:18

Ahh, the mistake you’re making is thinking they can make a vulva, they can’t. They can make something that looks a bit like one.

That’s pedantic to be honest. It is intended to be a vulva and fulfil the role of one. Reconstruction following illness or injury results in a partially or wholly surgically constructed vulva too.

TheWitchesAreBackInTown · 02/02/2023 09:40

The wider set is not a subset. Mothers is the subset of women.

Where is the play on words here? I am genuinely asking because that's not what it is from my point of view. Could you explain please?

ThreeFeetTall · 02/02/2023 09:44

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
And in your opinion, what is the role of a vulva?

As the daughter of a woman who had cancer that required such horrendous, painful and only partially successful reconstructive surgery, but you know, never mind because the female specific cancer eventually killed her anyway, please do FUCK OFF appropriating women's pain in the service of your pathetic misogyny.
