Vulva owners?!

Tallulah28 · 01/02/2023 18:16

Just came across this (no pun intended!) on Insta. Can someone explain to me how this company can use the “by mums for
mums” advertising ploy yet then go on to reduce us to “vulva owners”?

Vulva owners?!
Vulva owners?!

I've got a second hand 55 year old vulva available? Well used but runs fine.
Roomy. Very roomy. No longer needed.

I am interested. Got any pics?

Sugarplumfairy65 · 01/02/2023 23:18

Owned by The hut group. A puplic ltd company with mostly penis owners on the board

I dunno. I'm duly concerned that the term women is becoming taboo, but I can't get too worked up at this. They were talking about mothers but clarified in response to a question that anyone with a vulva might enjoy it.

So why not say "any woman"?

LauraNicolaides · 01/02/2023 23:29

Sugarplumfairy65 · 01/02/2023 23:22

So why not say "any woman"?

It would exclude trans men.

TheWitchesAreBackInTown · 01/02/2023 23:45

It would exclude trans men.

I'm not sure why women who say they are men want to be reminded of their female sex parts. This line of argument doesn't make sense.

No, this language comes from the other camp. Men who say they are women. Men who want us to be reduced to body parts. Dehumanising.

LauraNicolaides · 01/02/2023 23:51

With gender dysphoria they would feel more uncomfortable to be labelled as women. (The best people to ask about this would be trans men of course.)

Phrenologistsfinger · 01/02/2023 23:56

I feel very excluded now - I’m neither a mother nor a Volvo driver!

There is nothing for your type here Grin

BadNomad · 02/02/2023 00:31

Oh I didn't take "vulva owners" to mean "including trans people" in this situation. It was in relation to the "non-moms" comment, so - aunts, sisters, nieces, daughters etc. Any other category that is not "moms".

FOJN · 02/02/2023 00:42

With gender dysphoria the word vulva would be pretty triggering too which is why trans men talk about chests and top surgery rather than breasts and mastectomies.

A PP is right, it's about disconnecting words for female anatomy from the word woman.

Fuckoffsmilemakers · 02/02/2023 00:46

I've just emailed them this thread. I think they'll appreciate the feedback.🤣🤣🤣🤣

Grimchmas · 02/02/2023 01:00

@LauraNicolaides the trouble with getting to be inoffensive towards trans people is that it stops us from having a word for, well, women. Biological women, vulva owners. And it's important that we have a word to describe all the people of one particular sex. It's really important, because otherwise it's really easy to erode those people's rights.

WombsofWimbledon · 02/02/2023 01:02

BelperLawnmower · 01/02/2023 22:37

These strange labels don't "erase" women any more than, pre-brexit, being called an EU citizen erased your British nationality. You could be a British citizen and an EU national at the same time. But EU nationals were a wider group, and it was sometimes a more useful label.

(And the idea that anyone is being sued for using the word woman is as fanciful as Daily Express readers convincing themselves that they're "not allowed" to say they're white.)

My vulva is making an exit from this conversation, a Vexit, based on the fact I'm now picturing Nigel Farage.

Oh, and it's totally reasonable for women to care about being reduced to body parts. Obviously.

RiverSkater · 02/02/2023 01:15

Maybe written by a Penis Agitator.

(Wanker)

MrsMikeDrop · 02/02/2023 01:21

This is so dumb. So it says "for mothers by mothers" so assume you needed a uterus etc (excluding adoption of course), but then being PC by calling us vulva owners. I'd rather be called a bitch, than a vulva owner. Wow, I don't even know what to think about this 😕

TheWitchesAreBackInTown · 02/02/2023 05:14

BadNomad · 02/02/2023 00:31

What do they all have in common?

"Mothers and other women". Or maybe "all women, including mothers".

Or just "women". There's an idea.

My2pence2day · 02/02/2023 05:19

I don't think I'm that easily offended, but I find myself to be quite offended to be reduced to being referred to by my genitals 🫤
And it's just gross calling someone that, it seems disrespectful.
Oh hi penis owner. Shall we now refer to all people as anus owners.
What is the world coming to.
This feels like the opposite of progress!!

Lucylock · 02/02/2023 05:33

If they want to be inclusive then why have a product only aimed at mums, when it's clearly something not specific to them anyway.

And why not just say women and transmen. Vulva owner is crass and offensive.

musicalfrog · 02/02/2023 05:39

@ArcaneWireless

Take a bow, this is probably the biggest laugh I'll have today and it's only 5.30 in the morning.

I tend to think if I own something, I’ve made a conscious attempt to acquire it. Does anyone ever suggest you own your heart? Your liver? Proud owner of a spleen?

musicalfrog · 02/02/2023 05:49

Also I'm sure plenty of penis owners enjoy a vibrator.

Why don't they just market them at adults in general?

Fucking hell, not very inclusive eh.

WombsofWimbledon · 02/02/2023 06:03

Does it matter whether my vulva is leasehold or freehold? Ownership is such a cis heteronormative concept and reductive to ‘my’ vulva.

NumberTheory · 02/02/2023 06:19

If this had been done 10 years ago, it probably wouldn’t have crossed any one’s mind to associate it with trans rights activism and faux-inclusivity.

While I don’t want to be reduced to vulva owner as a general term, in this particular context my first reaction was to see it as a use of coarse language to be humourus (and it did make me smile). I wonder if the tweeter was thinking along these lines rather than the “how can I further the trans cause” lines.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 02/02/2023 06:29

Beyonsp · 01/02/2023 18:36

Grim.
I will never buy anything from a company that calls me a vulva owner. There's a word to describe me already female/woman take your pick.
Also I never see penis owner.

Oh I see it a lot on social media. Eg a woman asking for advice about BJs would say 'questions for all penis havers'

I haven't noticed it on products/advertising but 1) I don't really look at ads for things for men and 2) I only come across the vulva/uterus owner language in advertising when things are shared on MN.

The word they were reaching for is "woman", surely? Why not just say that? Why reduce us to a body part? Again.
